The endless transmigration. (2)

At Sāvatthī.
Then several mendicants went up to the Buddha … and asked him, “Sir, how many eons have passed?”
“Mendicants, many eons have passed. It’s not easy to calculate how many eons have passed, how many hundreds or thousands or hundreds of thousands of eons.”
“But sir, is it possible to give a simile?”
“It’s possible,” said the Buddha.
“Suppose there were four disciples with a lifespan of a hundred years. And each day they would each recollect a hundred thousand eons. Those four disciples would pass away after a hundred years and there would still be eons that they haven’t recollected. That’s how many eons have passed. It’s not easy to calculate how many eons have passed, how many hundreds or thousands or hundreds of thousands of eons.
Why is that? Transmigration has no known beginning. No first point is found of sentient beings roaming and transmigrating, hindered by ignorance and fettered by craving. For such a long time you have undergone suffering, agony, and disaster, swelling the cemeteries. This is quite enough for you to become disillusioned, dispassionate, and freed regarding all conditions.”
สมัยหนึ่ง พระผู้มีพระภาคประทับอยู่ที่พระเชตวัน อารามของอนาถบิณฑิกเศรษฐี เขตพระนครสาวัตถี ภิกษุหลายรูปได้เข้าไปเฝ้าพระผู้มีพระภาคยังที่ประทับ … ครั้นภิกษุเหล่านั้นนั่งเรียบร้อยแล้ว ได้ทูลถามพระผู้มีพระภาคว่า
ภันเต กัปทั้งหลายที่ผ่านไปแล้ว ล่วงไปแล้ว มากเท่าไรหนอ
ภิกษุทั้งหลาย กัปทั้งหลายที่ผ่านไปแล้ว ล่วงไปแล้วมีมาก มิใช่ง่ายที่จะนับกัปเหล่านั้นว่า เท่านี้กัป เท่านี้ ๑๐๐ กัป เท่านี้ ๑,๐๐๐ กัป หรือว่าเท่านี้ ๑๐๐,๐๐๐ กัป.
ภันเต ก็พระองค์อาจจะอุปมาได้ไหม
อาจอุปมาได้ ภิกษุทั้งหลาย ภิกษุทั้งหลาย เปรียบเหมือนสาวก ๔ รูปในกรณีนี้ เป็นผู้มีอายุ ๑๐๐ ปี มีชีวิต ๑๐๐ ปี หากเธอเหล่านั้นพึงระลึกถอยหลังไปได้วันละ ๑๐๐,๐๐๐ กัป กัปที่เธอเหล่านั้นระลึกไม่ถึงพึงยังมีอยู่อีก ส่วนสาวก ๔ รูปของเรา ผู้มีอายุ ๑๐๐ ปี มีชีวิต ๑๐๐ ปี พึงทำกาละโดยล่วงไปทุกๆ ๑๐๐ ปี โดยแท้ กัปที่ผ่านไปแล้วล่วงไปแล้ว มีจำนวนมากอย่างนี้แล มิใช่ง่ายที่จะนับกัปเหล่านั้นว่า เท่านี้กัป เท่านี้ ๑๐๐ กัป เท่านี้ ๑,๐๐๐ กัป หรือว่าเท่านี้ ๑๐๐,๐๐๐ กัป.
ข้อนั้นเพราะเหตุอะไร ภิกษุทั้งหลาย เพราะเหตุว่า สงสารนี้กำหนดที่สุดเบื้องต้นเบื้องปลายไม่ได้ เมื่อเหล่าสัตว์ผู้มีอวิชชาเป็นเครื่องกั้น มีตัณหาเป็นเครื่องผูก ท่องเที่ยวไปมาอยู่ ที่สุดเบื้องต้นย่อมไม่ปรากฏ สัตว์เหล่านั้นได้เสวยความทุกข์ ความเผ็ดร้อน ความพินาศ ได้เพิ่มพูนปฐพีที่เป็นป่าช้าตลอดกาลนานเหมือนอย่างนั้น.
ภิกษุทั้งหลาย ด้วยเหตุเพียงเท่านี้ ก็พอแล้วเพื่อจะเบื่อหน่ายในสังขารทั้งปวง พอแล้วเพื่อจะคลายกำหนัด พอแล้วเพื่อจะหลุดพ้น ดังนี้.
