At one time the Buddha was staying near Ves\u0101l\u012b, at the Great Wood, in the hall with the peaked roof.\u00a0Then Mah\u0101paj\u0101pat\u012b Gotam\u012b went up to the Buddha, bowed, stood to one side, and said to him:<\/p>\n

\u201cSir, may the Buddha please teach me Dhamma in brief. When I\u2019ve heard it, I\u2019ll live alone, withdrawn, diligent, keen, and resolute.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cGotam\u012b, you might know that certain things\u00a0lead to passion, not dispassion;\u00a0to being fettered, not to being unfettered;\u00a0to accumulation, not dispersal;\u00a0to more desires, not fewer;\u00a0to lack of contentment, not contentment;\u00a0to crowding, not seclusion;\u00a0to laziness, not energy;\u00a0to being burdensome, not being unburdensome.\u00a0You should definitely bear in mind that these things are\u00a0not the teaching, not the training, and not the Teacher\u2019s instructions.<\/p>\n

Then Mah\u0101paj\u0101pati Gotam\u012b went to the Blessed One and, on arrival, having bowed down to him, stood to one side. As she was standing there she said to him: \u201cIt would be good, lord, if the Blessed One would teach me the Dhamma in brief such that, having heard the Dhamma from the Blessed One, I might dwell alone, secluded, heedful, ardent, & resolute.\u201d<\/p>\n
