\u201cSir, the few leaves in your hand are a tiny amount.\u00a0There are far more leaves in the forest above.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cIn the same way, there is much more that I have directly known but have not explained to you. What I have explained is a tiny amount.\u00a0And why haven\u2019t I explained it?\u00a0Because it\u2019s not beneficial or relevant to the fundamentals of the spiritual life. It doesn\u2019t lead to disillusionment, dispassion, cessation, peace, insight, awakening, and extinguishment.\u00a0That\u2019s why I haven\u2019t explained it.<\/p>\n

And what have I explained?\u00a0I have explained: \u2018This is suffering\u2019 \u2026 \u2018This is the origin of suffering\u2019 \u2026 \u2018This is the cessation of suffering\u2019 \u2026 \u2018This is the practice that leads to the cessation of suffering\u2019.<\/p>\n

And why have I explained this?\u00a0Because it\u2019s beneficial and relevant to the fundamentals of the spiritual life. It leads to disillusionment, dispassion, cessation, peace, insight, awakening, and extinguishment.\u00a0That\u2019s why I\u2019ve explained it.<\/p>\n

\u201cVenerable sir, the si\u1e41sapa leaves that the Blessed One has taken up in his hand are few, but those in the si\u1e41sapa grove overhead are numerous.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cSo too, bhikkhus, the things I have directly known but have not taught you are numerous, while the things I have taught you are few. And why, bhikkhus, have I not taught those many things? Because they are unbeneficial, irrelevant to the fundamentals of the holy life, and do not lead to revulsion, to dispassion, to cessation, to peace, to direct knowledge, to enlightenment, to Nibb\u0101na.
