\u201c\u2018Now is the time! Now is the time!\u2019 So says an unlearned ordinary person. But they don\u2019t know whether it\u2019s time or not.\u00a0Mendicants, there are eight lost opportunities for spiritual practice.\u00a0What eight?<\/p>\n

Firstly, a Realized One has arisen in the world\u2014perfected, a fully awakened Buddha, accomplished in knowledge and conduct, holy, knower of the world, supreme guide for those who wish to train, teacher of gods and humans, awakened, blessed. He teaches the Dhamma leading to peace, extinguishment, awakening, as proclaimed by the Holy One.\u00a0But a person has been reborn in hell.\u00a0This is the first lost opportunity for spiritual practice.<\/p>\n

Furthermore, a Realized One has arisen in the world.\u00a0But a person has been reborn in the animal realm. This is the second lost opportunity.<\/p>\n

Furthermore, a Realized One has arisen in the world.\u00a0But a person has been reborn in the ghost realm. This is the third lost opportunity.<\/p>\n

Furthermore, a Realized One has arisen in the world.\u00a0But a person has been reborn in one of the long-lived orders of gods. This is the fourth lost opportunity.<\/p>\n

Furthermore, a Realized One has arisen in the world.\u00a0But a person has been reborn in the borderlands, among strange barbarian tribes, where monks, nuns, laymen, and laywomen do not go. This is the fifth lost opportunity \u2026<\/p>\n

Furthermore, a Realized One has arisen in the world. And a person is reborn in a central country. But they have wrong view and distorted perspective:\u00a0\u2018There\u2019s no meaning in giving, sacrifice, or offerings. There\u2019s no fruit or result of good and bad deeds. There\u2019s no afterlife. There\u2019s no such thing as mother and father, or beings that are reborn spontaneously. And there\u2019s no ascetic or brahmin who is well attained and practiced, and who describes the afterlife after realizing it with their own insight.\u2019 This is the sixth lost opportunity \u2026<\/p>\n

Furthermore, a Realized One has arisen in the world.\u00a0And a person is reborn in a central country. But they\u2019re witless, dull, stupid, and unable to distinguish what is well said from what is poorly said.\u00a0This is the seventh lost opportunity \u2026<\/p>\n

Furthermore, a Realized One has not arisen in the world \u2026\u00a0So he doesn\u2019t teach the Dhamma leading to peace, extinguishment, awakening, as proclaimed by the Holy One. And a person is reborn in a central country. And they\u2019re wise, bright, clever, and able to distinguish what is well said from what is poorly said.\u00a0This is the eighth lost opportunity \u2026<\/p>\n

There are these eight lost opportunities for spiritual practice.<\/p>\n

Mendicants, there is just one opportunity for spiritual practice.\u00a0What is that one?\u00a0It\u2019s when a Realized One has arisen in the world, perfected, a fully awakened Buddha, accomplished in knowledge and conduct, holy, knower of the world, supreme guide for those who wish to train, teacher of gods and humans, awakened, blessed.\u00a0He teaches the Dhamma leading to peace, extinguishment, awakening, as proclaimed by the Holy One. And a person is reborn in a central country. And they\u2019re wise, bright, clever, and able to distinguish what is well said from what is poorly said.\u00a0This is the one opportunity for spiritual practice.<\/p>\n

When you\u2019ve gained the human state,
\nand the true teaching has been so well proclaimed,
\nif you don\u2019t seize the moment
\nit\u2019ll pass you by.<\/p>\n

For many wrong times are spoken of,
\nwhich obstruct the path.
\nOnly on rare occasions
\ndo Realized Ones arise.<\/p>\n

If you find yourself in their presence,
\nso hard to find in the world,
\nand if you\u2019ve gained a human birth,
\nand the teaching of the Dhamma;
\nthat\u2019s enough to make an effort,
\nfor a person who loves themselves.<\/p>\n

How is the true teaching to be understood
\nso that the moment doesn\u2019t pass you by?
\nFor if you miss your moment
\nyou\u2019ll grieve when sent to hell.<\/p>\n

If you fail to achieve
\ncertainty regarding the true teaching
\nyou\u2019ll regret it for a long time,
\nlike a trader who loses a profit.<\/p>\n

A man shrouded by ignorance,
\na failure in the true teaching,
\nwill long undergo
\ntransmigration through birth and death.<\/p>\n

Those who\u2019ve gained the human state
\nwhen the true teaching has been so well proclaimed,
\nand have completed what the Teacher taught\u2014
\nor will do so, or are doing so now\u2014<\/p>\n

have realized the right time in the world
\nfor the supreme spiritual life.
\nYou should live guarded, ever mindful,
\nnot soaked with defilements,<\/p>\n

among those restrained ones
\nwho have practiced the path
\nproclaimed by the Realized One, the one with vision,
\nand taught by the kinsman of the Sun.<\/p>\n

Having cut off all underlying tendencies
\nthat follow those drifting in M\u0101ra\u2019s dominion,
\nthey\u2019re the ones in this world
\nwho\u2019ve truly crossed over,
\nhaving reached the ending of defilements.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cBhikkhus, the uninstructed worldling says: \u2018The world has gained the opportunity! The world has gained the opportunity!\u2019 but he does not know what is an opportunity and what is not an opportunity. There are, bhikkhus, these eight inopportune moments that are not right occasions for living the spiritual life. What eight?<\/p>\n

(1) \u201cHere, a Tath\u0101gata has arisen in the world, an arahant, perfectly enlightened, accomplished in true knowledge and conduct, fortunate, knower of the world, unsurpassed trainer of persons to be tamed, teacher of devas and humans, an Enlightened One, a Blessed One, and the Dhamma leading to peace, nibb\u0101na, and enlightenment is taught as proclaimed by a Fortunate One. But a person has been reborn in hell. This is the first inopportune moment that is not the right occasion for living the spiritual life.<\/p>\n

(2) \u201cAgain, a Tath\u0101gata has arisen in the world \u2026 and the Dhamma leading to peace, nibb\u0101na, and enlightenment is taught as proclaimed by a Fortunate One. But a person has been reborn in the animal realm. This is the second inopportune moment that is not the right occasion for living the spiritual life.<\/p>\n

(3) \u201cAgain, a Tath\u0101gata has arisen in the world \u2026 and the Dhamma leading to peace, nibb\u0101na, and enlightenment is taught as proclaimed by a Fortunate One. But a person has been reborn in the sphere of afflicted spirits. This is the third inopportune moment that is not the right occasion for living the spiritual life.<\/p>\n

(4) \u201cAgain, a Tath\u0101gata has arisen in the world \u2026 and the Dhamma leading to peace, nibb\u0101na, and enlightenment is taught as proclaimed by a Fortunate One. But a person has been reborn in a certain order of long-lived devas. This is the fourth inopportune moment that is not the right occasion for living the spiritual life.<\/p>\n

(5) \u201cAgain, a Tath\u0101gata has arisen in the world \u2026 and the Dhamma leading to peace, nibb\u0101na, and enlightenment is taught as proclaimed by a Fortunate One. But a person has been reborn in the outlying provinces among the uncouth foreigners,\u00a0a place\u00a0to which bhikkhus, bhikkhun\u012bs, male lay followers, and female lay followers do not travel. This is the fifth inopportune moment that is not the right occasion for living the spiritual life.<\/p>\n

(6) \u201cAgain, a Tath\u0101gata has arisen in the world \u2026 and the Dhamma leading to peace, nibb\u0101na, and enlightenment is taught as proclaimed by a Fortunate One. A person has been reborn in the central provinces, but he holds wrong view and has a distorted perspective: \u2018There is nothing given, nothing sacrificed, nothing offered; there is no fruit or result of good and bad actions; there is no this world, no other world; there is no mother, no father; there are no beings spontaneously reborn; there are in the world no ascetics and brahmins of right conduct and right practice who, having realized this world and the other world for themselves by direct knowledge, make them known to others.\u2019 This is the sixth inopportune moment that is not the right occasion for living the spiritual life.<\/p>\n

(7) \u201cAgain, a Tath\u0101gata has arisen in the world \u2026 and the Dhamma leading to peace, nibb\u0101na, and enlightenment is taught as proclaimed by a Fortunate One. A person has been reborn in the central provinces, but he is unwise, stupid, obtuse, unable to understand the meaning of what has been well stated and badly stated. This is the seventh inopportune moment that is not the right occasion for living the spiritual life.<\/p>\n

(8) \u201cAgain, a Tath\u0101gata has not arisen in the world \u2026 and the Dhamma\u00a0leading to peace, nibb\u0101na, and enlightenment is not taught as proclaimed by a Fortunate One. But a person has been reborn in the central provinces, and he is wise, intelligent, astute, able to understand the meaning of what has been well stated and badly stated. This is the eighth inopportune moment that is not the right occasion for living the spiritual life.<\/p>\n

\u201cThese are the eight inopportune moments that are not the right occasions for living the spiritual life.<\/p>\n

\u201cThere is, bhikkhus, one unique opportune moment that is the right occasion for living the spiritual life. What is it? Here, a Tath\u0101gata has arisen in the world, an arahant, perfectly enlightened, accomplished in true knowledge and conduct, fortunate, knower of the world, unsurpassed trainer of persons to be tamed, teacher of devas and humans, an Enlightened One, a Blessed One, and the Dhamma leading to peace, nibb\u0101na, and enlightenment is taught as proclaimed by a Fortunate One. And a person has been reborn in the central provinces, and he is wise, intelligent, astute, able to understand the meaning of what has been well stated and badly stated. This, bhikkhus, is the one unique opportune moment that is the right occasion for living the spiritual life.\u201d<\/p>\n

Having obtained the human state
\nwhen the good Dhamma has been well proclaimed,
\nthose who do not seize the moment
\nhave let the right moment slip by.<\/p>\n

For many inopportune times are spoken of,
\noccasions obstructive to the path;
\nfor it is only sometimes, on occasion,
\nthat Tath\u0101gatas arise in the world.<\/p>\n

If one has directly encountered them,
\nfortune\u00a0rarely gained in the world,
\nif one has obtained the human state,
\nand the good Dhamma is being taught,
\nfor a person desiring his own good,
\nthis is incentive enough to strive.<\/p>\n

How can one understand the good Dhamma,
\nso that the moment won\u2019t slip by?
\nFor those who miss the moment grieve
\nwhen they are reborn in hell.<\/p>\n

One here who has failed to obtain
\nthe fixed course of the good Dhamma,
\nwill come to regret it for a long time
\nlike a merchant who has missed a profit.<\/p>\n

A person hindered by ignorance
\nwho has failed in the good Dhamma
\nwill long experience wandering on
\nin\u00a0the round of\u00a0birth and death.<\/p>\n

But those who gain the human state
\nwhen the good Dhamma is well proclaimed,
\nhave accomplished the Teacher\u2019s word,
\nor will do so, or are doing so now.<\/p>\n

Those who have practiced the path,
\nproclaimed by the Tath\u0101gata,
\nhave penetrated the right moment in the world
\nthe unsurpassed spiritual life.<\/p>\n

You should dwell without leakages,
\nguarded, ever-mindful in the restraints
\ntaught by the One with Vision,
\nthe Kinsman of the Sun.<\/p>\n

Having cut off all underlying tendencies
\nthat follow one drifting in M\u0101ra\u2019s domain,
\nthose who attain the destruction of the taints,
\nthough in the world, have gone beyond.<\/p>\n
