At one time the Buddha was staying near S\u0101vatth\u012b in the Eastern Monastery, the stilt longhouse of Mig\u0101ra\u2019s mother, together with a large Sa\u1e45gha of around five hundred monks, all of whom were perfected ones.\u00a0Now, at that time it was the sabbath\u2014the full moon on the fifteenth day\u2014and the Buddha was sitting in the open surrounded by the Sa\u1e45gha of monks for the invitation to admonish.<\/p>\n

Then the Buddha looked around the Sa\u1e45gha of monks, who were silent. He addressed them:\u00a0\u201cCome now, monks, I invite you all:\u00a0Is there anything I\u2019ve done by way of body or speech that you would criticize?\u201d<\/p>\n

When he had spoken, Venerable S\u0101riputta got up from his seat, arranged his robe over one shoulder, raised his joined palms toward the Buddha, and said:\u00a0\u201cThere is nothing, sir, that you\u2019ve done by way of body or speech that we would criticize.\u00a0For the Blessed One gave rise to the unarisen path, gave birth to the unborn path, and explained the unexplained path. He is the knower of the path, the discoverer of the path, the expert on the path.\u00a0And now the disciples live following the path; they acquire it later.\u00a0And sir, I invite the Blessed One.\u00a0Is there anything I\u2019ve done by way of body or speech that you would criticize?\u201d<\/p>\n

You have great wisdom, widespread wisdom, laughing wisdom, swift wisdom, sharp wisdom, penetrating wisdom.\u00a0A wheel-turning monarch\u2019s oldest son rightly keeps wielding the power set in motion by his father.\u00a0In the same way, S\u0101riputta rightly keeps rolling the supreme Wheel of Dhamma that was rolled forth by me.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cSince it seems I have done nothing worthy of the Blessed One\u2019s criticism,\u00a0is there anything these five hundred monks have done by way of body or speech that you would criticize?\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cThere is nothing, S\u0101riputta, that these five hundred monks have done by way of body or speech that I would criticize.\u00a0For of these five hundred monks, sixty have the three knowledges, sixty have the six direct knowledges, sixty are freed both ways, and the rest are freed by wisdom.\u201d<\/p>\n

Then Venerable Va\u1e45g\u012bsa got up from his seat, arranged his robe over one shoulder, raised his joined palms toward the Buddha, and said,\u00a0\u201cI feel inspired to speak, Blessed One! I feel inspired to speak, Holy One!\u201d<\/p>\n
