Now, suppose that mendicant is ignoring and forgetting about those thoughts, but bad, unskillful thoughts connected with desire, hate, and delusion keep coming up. They should focus on stopping the formation of thoughts.\u00a0As they do so, those bad thoughts are given up and come to an end.\u00a0Their mind becomes stilled internally; it settles, unifies, and becomes immersed in sam\u0101dhi.\u00a0Suppose there was a person walking quickly.\u00a0They\u2019d think:\u00a0\u2018Why am I walking so quickly?\u00a0Why don\u2019t I slow down?\u2019\u00a0So they\u2019d slow down.\u00a0They\u2019d think:\u00a0\u2018Why am I walking slowly?\u00a0Why don\u2019t I stand still?\u2019\u00a0So they\u2019d stand still.\u00a0They\u2019d think:\u00a0\u2018Why am I standing still?\u00a0Why don\u2019t I sit down?\u2019\u00a0So they\u2019d sit down.\u00a0They\u2019d think:\u00a0\u2018Why am I sitting?\u00a0Why don\u2019t I lie down?\u2019\u00a0So they\u2019d lie down.\u00a0And so that person would reject successively coarser postures and adopt more subtle ones.<\/p>\n

In the same way, a mendicant \u2026 those thoughts are given up and come to an end \u2026<\/p>\n

Now, suppose that mendicant is focusing on stopping the formation of thoughts, but bad, unskillful thoughts connected with desire, hate, and delusion keep coming up.\u00a0With teeth clenched and tongue pressed against the roof of the mouth, they should squeeze, squash, and torture mind with mind.\u00a0As they do so, those bad thoughts are given up and come to an end.\u00a0Their mind becomes stilled internally; it settles, unifies, and becomes immersed in sam\u0101dhi.\u00a0It\u2019s like a strong man who grabs a weaker man by the head or throat or shoulder and squeezes, squashes, and tortures them.\u00a0In the same way, a mendicant \u2026\u00a0with teeth clenched and tongue pressed against the roof of the mouth, should squeeze, squash, and torture mind with mind.\u00a0As they do so, those bad thoughts are given up and come to an end.\u00a0Their mind becomes stilled internally; it settles, unifies, and becomes immersed in sam\u0101dhi.<\/p>\n

Now, take the mendicant who is focusing on some foundation of meditation that gives rise to bad, unskillful thoughts connected with desire, hate, and delusion. They focus on some other foundation of meditation connected with the skillful \u2026\u00a0They examine the drawbacks of those thoughts \u2026\u00a0They try to ignore and forget about those thoughts \u2026\u00a0They focus on stopping the formation of thoughts \u2026\u00a0With teeth clenched and tongue pressed against the roof of the mouth, they squeeze, squash, and torture mind with mind. When they succeed in each of these things, those bad thoughts are given up and come to an end.\u00a0Their mind becomes stilled internally; it settles, unifies, and becomes immersed in sam\u0101dhi.\u00a0This is called a mendicant who is a master of the ways of thought.\u00a0They\u2019ll think what they want to think, and they won\u2019t think what they don\u2019t want to think.\u00a0They\u2019ve cut off craving, untied the fetters, and by rightly comprehending conceit have made an end of suffering.\u201d<\/p>\n

That is what the Buddha said.\u00a0Satisfied, the mendicants were happy with what the Buddha said.<\/p>\n

With the abandoning of them his mind becomes steadied internally, quieted, brought to singleness, and concentrated. Just as a skilled carpenter or his apprentice might knock out, remove, and extract a coarse peg by means of a fine one, so too\u2026when a bhikkhu gives attention to some other sign connected with what is wholesome\u2026his mind becomes steadied internally, quieted, brought to singleness, and concentrated.<\/p>\n

II\u00a0\u201cIf, while he is giving attention to some other sign connected with what is wholesome, there still arise in him evil unwholesome thoughts connected with desire, with hate, and with delusion, then he should examine the danger in those thoughts thus: \u2018These thoughts are unwholesome, they are reprehensible, they result in suffering.\u2019 When he examines the danger in those thoughts, then any evil unwholesome thoughts connected with desire, with hate, and with delusion are abandoned in him and subside. With the abandoning of them his mind becomes steadied internally, quieted, brought to singleness, and concentrated. Just as a man or a woman, young, youthful, and fond of ornaments, would be horrified, humiliated, and disgusted if the carcass of a snake or a dog or a human being\u00a0were hung around his or her neck, so too\u2026when a bhikkhu examines the danger in those thoughts\u2026his mind becomes steadied internally, quieted, brought to singleness, and concentrated.<\/p>\n

III\u00a0\u201cIf, while he is examining the danger in those thoughts, there still arise in him evil unwholesome thoughts connected with desire, with hate, and with delusion, then he should try to forget those thoughts and should not give attention to them. When he tries to forget those thoughts and does not give attention to them, then any evil unwholesome thoughts connected with desire, with hate, and with delusion are abandoned in him and subside. With the abandoning of them his mind becomes steadied internally, quieted, brought to singleness, and concentrated. Just as a man with good eyes who did not want to see forms that had come within range of sight would either shut his eyes or look away, so too\u2026when a bhikkhu tries to forget those thoughts and does not give attention to them \u2026 his mind becomes steadied internally, quieted, brought to singleness, and concentrated.<\/p>\n

IV\u00a0\u201cIf, while he is trying to forget those thoughts and is not giving attention to them, there still arise in him evil unwholesome thoughts connected with desire, with hate, and with delusion, then he should give attention to stilling the thought-formation of those thoughts. When he gives attention to stilling the thought-formation of those thoughts, then any evil unwholesome thoughts connected with desire, with hate, and with delusion are abandoned in him and subside. With the abandoning of them his mind becomes steadied internally, quieted, brought to singleness, and concentrated. Just as a man walking fast might consider: \u2018Why am I walking fast? What if I walk slowly?\u2019 and he would walk slowly; then he might consider: \u2018Why am I walking slowly? What if I stand?\u2019 and he would stand; then he might consider: \u2018Why am I standing? What if I sit?\u2019 and he would sit; then he might consider: \u2018Why am I sitting? What if I lie down?\u2019 and he would lie down. By doing so he would substitute for each grosser posture one that was subtler. So too\u2026when a bhikkhu gives attention to stilling the thought-formation of those thoughts\u2026his mind becomes steadied internally, quieted, brought to singleness, and concentrated.<\/p>\n

This bhikkhu is then called a master of the courses of thought. He will think whatever thought he wishes to think and he will not think any thought that he does not wish to think. He has severed craving, flung off the fetters, and with the complete penetration of conceit he has made an end of suffering.\u201d<\/p>\n

That is what the Blessed One said. The bhikkhus were satisfied and delighted in the Blessed One\u2019s words.<\/p>\n

From their abandoning, the mind becomes internally stable, settled, unified, and concentrated. \u201cMonks, this is called a monk who is in control of all his patterns of thought.5\u00a0He will think whatever thought he wishes to think; he will not think whatever thought he does not wish to think. Craving has been severed, the fetters have been removed, and through the appropriate understanding of conceit,6\u00a0dissatisfaction7\u00a0has been terminated.\u201d<\/p>\n

This is what the Blessed One said. Satisfied, those monks delighted in the Blessed One\u2018s speech.<\/p>\n
