But when I develop equanimity I become dispassionate towards this other source of suffering.\u2019\u00a0So they either actively strive or develop equanimity as appropriate.\u00a0Through active striving they become dispassionate towards that specific source of suffering,\u00a0and so that suffering is worn away.\u00a0Through developing equanimity they become dispassionate towards that other source of suffering,\u00a0and so that suffering is worn away.<\/p>\n<p>Suppose a man is in love with a woman, full of intense desire and lust.\u00a0Then he sees her standing together with another man, chatting, giggling, and laughing.<\/p>\n<p>What do you think, mendicants?\u00a0Would that give rise to sorrow, lamentation, pain, sadness, and distress for him?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes, sir.\u00a0Why is that?\u00a0Because that man is in love that woman, full of intense desire and lust.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThen that man might think:\u00a0\u2018I\u2019m in love with that woman, full of intense desire and lust.\u00a0When I saw her standing together with another man, chatting, giggling, and laughing, it gave rise to sorrow, lamentation, pain, sadness, and distress for me.\u00a0Why don\u2019t I give up that desire and lust for that woman?\u2019\u00a0So that\u2019s what he did.\u00a0Some time later he sees her again standing together with another man, chatting, giggling, and laughing.<\/p>\n<p>What do you think, mendicants?\u00a0Would that give rise to sorrow, lamentation, pain, sadness, and distress for him?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo, sir.\u00a0Why is that?\u00a0Because he no longer desires that woman.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIn the same way, a mendicant doesn\u2019t bring suffering upon themselves; and they don\u2019t give up legitimate pleasure, but they\u2019re not besotted with that pleasure.\u00a0They understand:\u00a0\u2018When I actively strive I become dispassionate towards this source of suffering. There is the case where a monk, when not loaded down, does not load himself down with pain, nor does he reject pleasure that accords with the Dhamma, although he is not infatuated on that pleasure. He discerns that \u2018When I exert a [physical, verbal, or mental] fabrication against this cause of stress, then from the fabrication of exertion there is dispassion. When I look on with equanimity at that cause of stress, then from the development of equanimity there is dispassion.\u2019 So he exerts a fabrication against the cause of stress for which dispassion comes from the fabrication of exertion, and develops equanimity with regard to the cause of stress for which dispassion comes from the development of equanimity. Thus the stress coming from the cause of stress where there is dispassion from the fabrication of exertion is exhausted, and the stress coming from the cause of stress where there is dispassion from the development of equanimity is exhausted.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSuppose that a man is in love with a woman, his mind ensnared with fierce desire, fierce passion. He sees her standing with another man, chatting, joking, &amp; laughing. What do you think, monks? As he sees her standing with another man, chatting, joking, &amp; laughing, would sorrow, lamentation, pain, distress, &amp; despair arise in him?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes, lord. Why is that? Because he is in love with her, his mind ensnared with fierce desire, fierce passion.\u2026\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNow suppose the thought were to occur to him, \u2018I am in love with this woman, my mind ensnared with fierce desire, fierce passion. When I see her standing with another man, chatting, joking, &amp; laughing, then sorrow, lamentation, pain, distress, &amp; despair arise within me. Why don\u2019t I abandon my desire &amp; passion for that woman?\u2019 So he abandons his desire &amp; passion for that woman, and afterwards sees her standing with another man, chatting, joking, &amp; laughing. What do you think, monks? As he sees her standing with another man, chatting, joking, &amp; laughing, would sorrow, lamentation, pain, distress, &amp; despair arise in him?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo, lord. Why is that? Because he has attained the goal for which he was heating &amp; warming the shaft. That is why at a later time he would no longer heat &amp; warm the shaft between two flames, making it straight &amp; pliable.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIn the same way, the monk notices this: \u2018When I live according to my pleasure, unskillful qualities increase in me &amp; skillful qualities decline. When I exert myself with stress &amp; pain, though, unskillful qualities decline in me &amp; skillful qualities increase. Why don\u2019t I exert myself with stress &amp; pain?\u2019 So he exerts himself with stress &amp; pain, and while he is exerting himself with stress &amp; pain, unskillful qualities decline in him, &amp; skillful qualities increase. Then at a later time he would no longer exert himself with stress &amp; pain. Why is that? Because he has attained the goal for which he was exerting himself with stress &amp; pain.
