\u2026 Furthermore, a mendicant meditates by observing an aspect of principles with respect to the four noble truths.\u00a0And how does a mendicant meditate observing an aspect of principles with respect to the four noble truths?<\/p>\n

It\u2019s when a mendicant truly understands: \u2018This is suffering\u2019 \u2026 \u2018This is the origin of suffering\u2019 \u2026 \u2018This is the cessation of suffering\u2019 \u2026 \u2018This is the practice that leads to the cessation of suffering.\u2019<\/p>\n

4.5.1. The Truth of Suffering<\/p>\n

And what is the noble truth of suffering?<\/p>\n

Rebirth is suffering; old age is suffering; death is suffering; sorrow, lamentation, pain, sadness, and distress are suffering; association with the disliked is suffering; separation from the liked is suffering; not getting what you wish for is suffering. In brief, the five grasping aggregates are suffering.<\/p>\n

And what is rebirth?\u00a0The rebirth, inception, conception, reincarnation, manifestation of the sets of phenomena, and acquisition of the sense fields of the various sentient beings in the various orders of sentient beings.\u00a0This is called rebirth.<\/p>\n

And what is old age?\u00a0The old age, decrepitude, broken teeth, grey hair, wrinkly skin, diminished vitality, and failing faculties of the various sentient beings in the various orders of sentient beings.\u00a0This is called old age.<\/p>\n

And what is death?\u00a0The passing away, perishing, disintegration, demise, mortality, death, decease, breaking up of the aggregates, laying to rest of the corpse, and cutting off of the life faculty of the various sentient beings in the various orders of sentient beings.\u00a0This is called death.<\/p>\n

And what is sorrow?\u00a0The sorrow, sorrowing, state of sorrow, inner sorrow, inner deep sorrow in someone who has undergone misfortune, who has experienced suffering.\u00a0This is called sorrow.<\/p>\n

And what is lamentation?\u00a0The wail, lament, wailing, lamenting, state of wailing and lamentation in someone who has undergone misfortune, who has experienced suffering.\u00a0This is called lamentation.<\/p>\n

And what is pain?\u00a0Physical pain, physical displeasure, the painful, unpleasant feeling that\u2019s born from physical contact.\u00a0This is called pain.<\/p>\n

And what is sadness?\u00a0Mental pain, mental displeasure, the painful, unpleasant feeling that\u2019s born from mental contact.\u00a0This is called sadness.<\/p>\n

And what is distress?\u00a0The stress, distress, state of stress and distress in someone who has undergone misfortune, who has experienced suffering.\u00a0This is called distress.<\/p>\n

And what is meant by \u2018association with the disliked is suffering\u2019?\u00a0There are sights, sounds, smells, tastes, touches, and thoughts that are unlikable, undesirable, and disagreeable. And there are those who want to harm, injure, disturb, and threaten you. The coming together with these, the joining, inclusion, mixing with them:\u00a0this is what is meant by \u2018association with the disliked is suffering\u2019.<\/p>\n

And what is meant by \u2018separation from the liked is suffering\u2019?\u00a0There are sights, sounds, smells, tastes, touches, and thoughts that are likable, desirable, and agreeable. And there are those who want to benefit, help, comfort, and protect you. The division from these, the disconnection, segregation, and parting from them:\u00a0this is what is meant by \u2018separation from the liked is suffering\u2019.<\/p>\n

And what is meant by \u2018not getting what you wish for is suffering\u2019?\u00a0In sentient beings who are liable to be reborn, such a wish arises:\u00a0\u2018Oh, if only we were not liable to be reborn! If only rebirth would not come to us!\u2019\u00a0But you can\u2019t get that by wishing.\u00a0This is what is meant by \u2018not getting what you wish for is suffering.\u2019\u00a0In sentient beings who are liable to grow old \u2026\u00a0fall ill \u2026\u00a0die \u2026\u00a0experience sorrow, lamentation, pain, sadness, and distress, such a wish arises: \u2018Oh, if only we were not liable to experience sorrow, lamentation, pain, sadness, and distress! If only sorrow, lamentation, pain, sadness, and distress would not come to us!\u2019\u00a0But you can\u2019t get that by wishing.\u00a0This is what is meant by \u2018not getting what you wish for is suffering.\u2019<\/p>\n

And what is meant by \u2018in brief, the five grasping aggregates are suffering\u2019?\u00a0They are the grasping aggregates that consist of form, feeling, perception, choices, and consciousness.\u00a0This is what is meant by \u2018in brief, the five grasping aggregates are suffering\u2019.<\/p>\n

This is called the noble truth of suffering.<\/p>\n

4.5.2. The Origin of Suffering<\/p>\n

And what is the noble truth of the origin of suffering?<\/p>\n

It\u2019s the craving that leads to future rebirth, mixed up with relishing and greed, looking for enjoyment in various different realms. That is,\u00a0craving for sensual pleasures, craving for continued existence, and craving to end existence.<\/p>\n

But where does that craving arise and where does it settle?\u00a0Whatever in the world seems nice and pleasant, it is there that craving arises and settles.<\/p>\n

And what in the world seems nice and pleasant?\u00a0The eye in the world seems nice and pleasant, and it is there that craving arises and settles.\u00a0The ear \u2026\u00a0nose \u2026\u00a0tongue \u2026\u00a0body \u2026\u00a0mind in the world seems nice and pleasant, and it is there that craving arises and settles.<\/p>\n

Sights \u2026\u00a0sounds \u2026\u00a0smells \u2026\u00a0tastes \u2026\u00a0touches \u2026\u00a0thoughts in the world seem nice and pleasant, and it is there that craving arises and settles.<\/p>\n

Eye consciousness \u2026\u00a0ear consciousness \u2026\u00a0nose consciousness \u2026\u00a0tongue consciousness \u2026\u00a0body consciousness \u2026\u00a0mind consciousness in the world seems nice and pleasant, and it is there that craving arises and settles.<\/p>\n

Eye contact \u2026\u00a0ear contact \u2026\u00a0nose contact \u2026\u00a0tongue contact \u2026\u00a0body contact \u2026\u00a0mind contact in the world seems nice and pleasant, and it is there that craving arises and settles.<\/p>\n

Feeling born of eye contact \u2026\u00a0feeling born of ear contact \u2026\u00a0feeling born of nose contact \u2026\u00a0feeling born of tongue contact \u2026\u00a0feeling born of body contact \u2026\u00a0feeling born of mind contact in the world seems nice and pleasant, and it is there that craving arises and settles.<\/p>\n

Perception of sights \u2026\u00a0perception of sounds \u2026\u00a0perception of smells \u2026\u00a0perception of tastes \u2026\u00a0perception of touches \u2026\u00a0perception of thoughts in the world seems nice and pleasant, and it is there that craving arises and settles.<\/p>\n

Intention regarding sights \u2026\u00a0intention regarding sounds \u2026\u00a0intention regarding smells \u2026\u00a0intention regarding tastes \u2026\u00a0intention regarding touches \u2026\u00a0intention regarding thoughts in the world seems nice and pleasant, and it is there that craving arises and settles.<\/p>\n

Craving for sights \u2026\u00a0craving for sounds \u2026\u00a0craving for smells \u2026\u00a0craving for tastes \u2026\u00a0craving for touches \u2026\u00a0craving for thoughts in the world seems nice and pleasant, and it is there that craving arises and settles.<\/p>\n

Thoughts about sights \u2026\u00a0thoughts about sounds \u2026\u00a0thoughts about smells \u2026\u00a0thoughts about tastes \u2026\u00a0thoughts about touches \u2026\u00a0thoughts about thoughts in the world seem nice and pleasant, and it is there that craving arises and settles.<\/p>\n

Considerations regarding sights \u2026\u00a0considerations regarding sounds \u2026\u00a0considerations regarding smells \u2026\u00a0considerations regarding tastes \u2026\u00a0considerations regarding touches \u2026\u00a0considerations regarding thoughts in the world seem nice and pleasant, and it is there that craving arises and settles.<\/p>\n

This is called the noble truth of the origin of suffering.<\/p>\n

4.5.3. The Cessation of Suffering<\/p>\n

And what is the noble truth of the cessation of suffering?<\/p>\n

It\u2019s the fading away and cessation of that very same craving with nothing left over; giving it away, letting it go, releasing it, and not adhering to it.<\/p>\n

Whatever in the world seems nice and pleasant, it is there that craving is given up and ceases.<\/p>\n

And what in the world seems nice and pleasant?\u00a0The eye in the world seems nice and pleasant, and it is there that craving is given up and ceases. \u2026<\/p>\n

Considerations regarding thoughts in the world seem nice and pleasant, and it is there that craving is given up and ceases.<\/p>\n

This is called the noble truth of the cessation of suffering.<\/p>\n

4.5.4. The Path<\/p>\n

And what is the noble truth of the practice that leads to the cessation of suffering?<\/p>\n

It is simply this noble eightfold path, that is:\u00a0right view, right thought, right speech, right action, right livelihood, right effort, right mindfulness, and right immersion.<\/p>\n

And what is right view?\u00a0Knowing about suffering, the origin of suffering, the cessation of suffering, and the practice that leads to the cessation of suffering.\u00a0This is called right view.<\/p>\n

And what is right thought?\u00a0Thoughts of renunciation, good will, and harmlessness.\u00a0This is called right thought.<\/p>\n

And what is right speech?\u00a0The refraining from lying, divisive speech, harsh speech, and talking nonsense.\u00a0This is called right speech.<\/p>\n

And what is right action?\u00a0Refraining from killing living creatures, stealing, and sexual misconduct.\u00a0This is called right action.<\/p>\n

And what is right livelihood?\u00a0It\u2019s when a noble disciple gives up wrong livelihood and earns a living by right livelihood.\u00a0This is called right livelihood.<\/p>\n

And what is right effort?\u00a0It\u2019s when a mendicant generates enthusiasm, tries, makes an effort, exerts the mind, and strives so that bad, unskillful qualities don\u2019t arise.\u00a0They generate enthusiasm, try, make an effort, exert the mind, and strive so that bad, unskillful qualities that have arisen are given up.\u00a0They generate enthusiasm, try, make an effort, exert the mind, and strive so that skillful qualities arise.\u00a0They generate enthusiasm, try, make an effort, exert the mind, and strive so that skillful qualities that have arisen remain, are not lost, but increase, mature, and are completed by development.\u00a0This is called right effort.<\/p>\n

And what is right mindfulness?\u00a0It\u2019s when a mendicant meditates by observing an aspect of the body\u2014keen, aware, and mindful, rid of desire and aversion for the world.\u00a0They meditate observing an aspect of feelings\u2014keen, aware, and mindful, rid of desire and aversion for the world.\u00a0They meditate observing an aspect of the mind\u2014keen, aware, and mindful, rid of desire and aversion for the world.\u00a0They meditate observing an aspect of principles\u2014keen, aware, and mindful, rid of desire and aversion for the world.\u00a0This is called right mindfulness.<\/p>\n

And what is right immersion?\u00a0It\u2019s when a mendicant, quite secluded from sensual pleasures, secluded from unskillful qualities, enters and remains in the first absorption, which has the rapture and bliss born of seclusion, while placing the mind and keeping it connected.\u00a0As the placing of the mind and keeping it connected are stilled, they enter and remain in the second absorption, which has the rapture and bliss born of immersion, with internal clarity and confidence, and unified mind, without placing the mind and keeping it connected.\u00a0And with the fading away of rapture, they enter and remain in the third absorption, where they meditate with equanimity, mindful and aware, personally experiencing the bliss of which the noble ones declare, \u2018Equanimous and mindful, one meditates in bliss.\u2019\u00a0Giving up pleasure and pain, and ending former happiness and sadness, they enter and remain in the fourth absorption, without pleasure or pain, with pure equanimity and mindfulness.\u00a0This is called right immersion.<\/p>\n

This is called the noble truth of the practice that leads to the cessation of suffering. \u2026<\/p>\n

Here, monks, a monk knows as it really is \u201cthis is Suffering\u201d, he knows as it really is \u201cthis is the Origination of Suffering\u201d, he knows as it really is \u201cthis is the Cessation of Suffering\u201d, he knows as it really is \u201cthis is the Practice Leading to the Cessation of Suffering\u201d.<\/p>\n

The Truth of Suffering<\/p>\n

Now what, monks, is the Noble Truth of Suffering?<\/p>\n

Birth is suffering also old age is suffering also death is suffering also grief, lamentation, pain, sorrow, and despair, is suffering also being joined to what is not liked is suffering, also being parted from what is liked is suffering, also not to obtain that which one longs for is suffering in brief, the five constituents (of mind and body) that provide fuel for attachment are suffering.<\/p>\n

Now what, monks, is birth?<\/p>\n

For the various beings in the various classes of beings (there is) birth, being born, appearing, turning up; the manifestation of the constituents (of mind and body), the acquisition of the sense spheres: this, monks, is called birth.<\/p>\n

Now what, monks, is old age?<\/p>\n

For the various beings in the various classes of beings there is old age, agedness, broken teeth, greying hair, and wrinkled skin; the dwindling away of the life span, the decay of the sense faculties: this, monks, is called old age.<\/p>\n

Now what, monks, is death?<\/p>\n

For the various beings in the various classes of beings there is a fall, a falling away, a breaking up, a disappearance, a dying, a death, a making of time; the break up of the constituents (of mind and body), the throwing off of the body; the cutting off of the life faculty: this, monks, is called death.<\/p>\n

Now what, monks, is grief?<\/p>\n

For he who has, monks, some sort of misfortune or other, who is touched by some sort of painful thing or another, there is grief, grieving, the state of grieving, inner grief, great inner grief: this, monks, is called grief.<\/p>\n

Now what, monks, is lamentation?<\/p>\n

For he who has, monks, some sort of misfortune or other, who is touched by some sort of painful thing or another, there are laments, great laments, lamenting, great lamenting, the state of lamenting, the state of great lamentation: this, monks, is called lamentation.<\/p>\n

Now what, monks, is pain?<\/p>\n

That, monks, which is bodily pain, bodily disagreeableness, pain born of contact with the body, disagreeable feeling: this, monks, is called pain.<\/p>\n

Now what, monks, is sorrow?<\/p>\n

That, monks, which is mental pain, mental disagreeableness, pain born of contact with the mind, disagreeable feeling: this, monks, is called sorrow.<\/p>\n

Now what, monks, is despair?<\/p>\n

For he who has, monks, some sort of misfortune or other, who is touched by some sort of painful thing or another, there is desponding, despairing, the state of despondency, the state of despair: this, monks, is called despair.<\/p>\n

And what, monks, is the suffering from being joined to what is not liked?<\/p>\n

Here, for that one who has unwanted, unlovely, unpleasant forms, sounds, smells, tastes, tangibles, and thoughts; or, for that one who has those who do not desire his welfare, benefit, comfort and security\u2014(and then) having meetings, assembly, connection, and interaction with them: this, monks, is called the suffering from being joined to what is not liked.<\/p>\n

And what, monks, is the suffering from being parted from what is liked?<\/p>\n

Here, for that one who has wanted, lovely, pleasant forms, sounds, smells, tastes, tangibles, and thoughts; or, for that one who has those who do desire his welfare, benefit, comfort and security\u2014mothers, or fathers, or brothers, or sisters, or friends, or companions, or blood relatives\u2014(and then) not having meetings, assembly, connection, and interaction with them: this, monks, is called the suffering from being parted from what is liked.<\/p>\n

Now what, monks, is the suffering from not obtaining what one longs for?<\/p>\n

To those beings subject to birth, monks, a longing like this arises: \u201cOh, might we not be subject to birth, may birth not come to us!\u201d But that cannot be attained merely by longing for it: this is the suffering from not obtaining what one longs for.<\/p>\n

To those beings subject to old age, monks, a longing like this arises:<\/p>\n

\u201cOh, might we not be subject to old age, may old age not come to us!\u201d But that cannot be attained merely by longing for it: this is the suffering from not obtaining what one longs for.<\/p>\n

To those beings subject to sickness, monks, a longing like this arises:<\/p>\n

\u201cOh, might we not be subject to sickness, may sickness not come to us!\u201d But that cannot be attained merely by longing for it: this is the suffering from not obtaining what one longs for. To those beings subject to death, monks, a longing like this arises: \u201cOh, might we not be subject to death, may death not come to us!\u201d But that cannot be attained merely by longing for it: this is the suffering from not obtaining what one longs for.<\/p>\n

To those beings subject to grief, lamentation, pain, sorrow, and despair, monks, a longing like this arises:<\/p>\n

\u201cOh, might we not be subject to grief, lamentation, pain, sorrow, and despair, may grief, lamentation, pain, sorrow, and despair, not come to us!\u201d But that cannot be attained merely by longing for it: this is the suffering from not obtaining what one longs for.<\/p>\n

Now what, monks, in brief, are the five constituents (of mind and body) that provide fuel for attachment which are suffering?<\/p>\n

They are as follows:<\/p>\n

the form constituent that is fuel for attachment<\/p>\n

the feelings constituent that is fuel for attachment<\/p>\n

the perceptions constituent that is fuel for attachment<\/p>\n

the (mental) processes constituent that is fuel for attachment<\/p>\n

the consciousness constituent that is fuel for attachment.<\/p>\n

These, monks, are called, in brief, the five constituents (of mind and body) that provide fuel for attachment which are suffering.<\/p>\n

This, monks, is called the Noble Truth of Suffering.<\/p>\n

The Truth of Origination<\/p>\n

And what, monks, is the Noble Truth of the Origination of Suffering?<\/p>\n

It is that craving which leads to the continuation of existence, which is connected with enjoyment and passion, greatly enjoying this and that, as follows:<\/p>\n

craving in regard to sense pleasures<\/p>\n

craving in regard to the continuation of existence<\/p>\n

craving in regard to the discontinuation of existence.<\/p>\n

Now where, monks, does that craving when it is arising arise? When settling where does it settle?<\/p>\n

In the world there is that which is likeable and pleasing\u2014here this craving when it is arising arises, here when settling it settles.<\/p>\n

And in the world what is likeable and pleasing?<\/p>\n

In the world the eye is likeable and pleasing\u2014here this craving when it is arising arises, here when settling it settles.<\/p>\n

In the world the ear is likeable and pleasing\u2014here this craving when it is arising arises, here when settling it settles.<\/p>\n

In the world the nose is likeable and pleasing\u2014here this craving when it is arising arises, here when settling it settles.<\/p>\n

It is this noble path with eight factors, as follows: right view, right thought, right speech, right action, right livelihood right endeavour, right mindfulness, right concentration.<\/p>\n

Now what, monks, is right view?<\/p>\n

That, monks, which is knowledge about suffering knowledge about the origination of suffering knowledge about the cessation of suffering knowledge about the practice leading to the cessation of suffering.<\/p>\n

This, monks, is called right view.<\/p>\n

Now what, monks, is right thought?<\/p>\n

The thought of renunciation, the thought of good-will, the thought of non-violence.<\/p>\n

This, monks, is called right thought.<\/p>\n

Now what, monks, is right speech?<\/p>\n

Refraining from false speech refraining from malicious speech refraining from rough speech refraining from frivolous talk.<\/p>\n

This, monks, is called right speech.<\/p>\n

Now what, monks, is right action?<\/p>\n

Refraining from killing living creatures refraining from taking what has not been given refraining from sexual misconduct.<\/p>\n

This, monks, is called right action.<\/p>\n

Now what, monks, is right livelihood?<\/p>\n

Here, monks, a noble disciple, having abandoned a wrong way of livelihood, makes his living by a right way of livelihood.<\/p>\n

This, monks, is called right livelihood.<\/p>\n

Now what, monks, is right endeavour?<\/p>\n

Here, monks, a monk regarding bad and unwholesome thoughts that have not yet arisen generates desire for their non-arising, (in this regard) he endeavours, instigates energy, exerts his mind, and makes an effort.<\/p>\n

Regarding bad and unwholesome things that have already arisen he generates desire for their abandonment, (in this regard) he endeavours, instigates energy, exerts his mind, and makes an effort.<\/p>\n

He generates desire for the arising of wholesome things that have not yet arisen, (in this regard) he endeavours, instigates energy, exerts his mind, and makes an effort.<\/p>\n

Regarding wholesome things that have arisen he generates desire for their endurance, persistence, multiplication, extension, development, and fulfilment, (in this regard) he endeavours, instigates energy, exerts his mind, and makes an effort.<\/p>\n

This, monks, is called right endeavour.<\/p>\n

Now what, monks, is right mindfulness?<\/p>\n

Here, monks, a monk dwells contemplating (the nature of) the body in the body, ardent, fully aware, and mindful, after removing avarice and sorrow regarding the world.<\/p>\n

He dwells contemplating (the nature of) feelings in feelings, ardent, fully aware, and mindful, after removing avarice and sorrow regarding the world.<\/p>\n

He dwells contemplating (the nature of) the mind in the mind, ardent, fully aware, and mindful, after removing avarice and sorrow regarding the world.<\/p>\n

He dwells contemplating (the nature of) things in (various) things, ardent, fully aware, and mindful, after removing avarice and sorrow regarding the world.<\/p>\n

This, monks, is called right mindfulness.<\/p>\n

Now what, monks, is right concentration?<\/p>\n

Here, monks, a monk, quite secluded from sense desires, secluded from unwholesome things, having thinking, reflection, and the happiness and joy born of seclusion, dwells having attained the first absorption.<\/p>\n

With the calming down of thinking and reflection, with internal clarity, and one-pointedness of mind, being without thinking, without reflection, having the happiness and joy born of concentration, he dwells having attained the second absorption.<\/p>\n

With the fading away of joy he dwells equanimous, mindful, fully aware, experiencing happiness through the body, about which the Noble Ones declare: \u201cHe dwells pleasantly, mindful, and equanimous,\u201d he dwells having attained the third absorption.<\/p>\n

Having abandoned pleasure, abandoned pain, and with the previous passing away of mental happiness and sorrow, without pain, without pleasure, and with complete purity of mindfulness owing to equanimity, he dwells having attained the fourth absorption.<\/p>\n

This, monks, is called right concentration.<\/p>\n
