At a later time they become a long-distance shooter, a marksman, who shatters large objects.\u00a0In the same way a noble disciple, quite secluded from sensual pleasures, enters and remains in the first absorption.\u00a0They contemplate the phenomena there\u2014included in form, feeling, perception, choices, and consciousness\u2014as impermanent, as suffering, as diseased, as an abscess, as a dart, as misery, as an affliction, as alien, as falling apart, as empty, as not-self.\u00a0They turn their mind away from those things,\u00a0and apply it to the deathless:\u00a0\u2018This is peaceful; this is sublime\u2014that is, the stilling of all activities, the letting go of all attachments, the ending of craving, fading away, cessation, extinguishment.\u2019 Abiding in that they attain the ending of defilements.\u00a0If they don\u2019t attain the ending of defilements, with the ending of the five lower fetters they\u2019re reborn spontaneously, because of their passion and love for that meditation. In the same way, there is the case where a monk\u2026 enters &#038; remains in the first\u00a0jhana: rapture &#038; pleasure born of seclusion, accompanied by directed thought &#038; evaluation. He regards whatever phenomena there that are connected with form, feeling, perception, fabrications, &#038; consciousness, as inconstant, stressful, a disease, a cancer, an arrow, painful, an affliction, alien, a disintegration, an emptiness, not-self.
