And how is a mendicant accomplished in ethics?\u00a0It\u2019s when a mendicant is ethical, restrained in the monastic code, conducting themselves well and seeking alms in suitable places. Seeing danger in the slightest fault, they keep the rules they\u2019ve undertaken.\u00a0That\u2019s how a mendicant is accomplished in ethics.<\/p>\n

And how does a mendicant guard the sense doors?\u00a0When a mendicant sees a sight with their eyes, they don\u2019t get caught up in the features and details.\u00a0If the faculty of sight were left unrestrained, bad unskillful qualities of desire and aversion would become overwhelming. For this reason, they practice restraint, protecting the faculty of sight, and achieving restraint over it.\u00a0Hearing a sound with their ears \u2026\u00a0Smelling an odor with their nose \u2026\u00a0Tasting a flavor with their tongue \u2026\u00a0Feeling a touch with their body \u2026\u00a0Knowing a thought with their mind, they don\u2019t get caught up in the features and details.\u00a0If the faculty of mind were left unrestrained, bad unskillful qualities of desire and aversion would become overwhelming. And how does a mendicant eat in moderation?\u00a0It\u2019s when a mendicant reflects properly on the food that they eat:\u00a0\u2018Not for fun, indulgence, adornment, or decoration, but only to sustain this body, to avoid harm, and to support spiritual practice. In this way, I shall put an end to old discomfort and not give rise to new discomfort, and I will live blamelessly and at ease.\u2019\u00a0That\u2019s how a mendicant eats in moderation.<\/p>\n

And how is a mendicant dedicated to wakefulness?\u00a0It\u2019s when a mendicant practices walking and sitting meditation by day, purifying their mind from obstacles.\u00a0In the evening, they continue to practice walking and sitting meditation.\u00a0In the middle of the night, they lie down in the lion\u2019s posture\u2014on the right side, placing one foot on top of the other\u2014mindful and aware, and focused on the time of getting up.\u00a0In the last part of the night, they get up and continue to practice walking and sitting meditation, purifying their mind from obstacles.\u00a0This is how a mendicant is dedicated to wakefulness.\u00a0A mendicant who has these four qualities can\u2019t decline, and has drawn near to extinguishment.<\/p>\n

\neating in moderation,

a mendicant lives like this, with keen energy,

A mendicant who loves to be diligent,
\nseeing fear in negligence,
\ncan\u2019t decline,

\u201cBhikkhus, a bhikkhu who possesses four qualities is incapable of decline and is in the vicinity of nibb\u0101na. What four? Here, a bhikkhu is accomplished in virtuous behavior, guards the doors of the sense faculties, observes moderation in eating, and is intent on wakefulness.<\/p>\n

(1) \u201cAnd how is a bhikkhu accomplished in virtuous behavior? Here, a bhikkhu is virtuous; he dwells restrained by the P\u0101timokkha, possessed of good conduct and resort, seeing danger in minute faults. Having undertaken the training rules, he trains in them. It is in this way that a bhikkhu is accomplished in virtuous behavior.<\/p>\n

(2) \u201cAnd how does a bhikkhu guard the doors of the sense faculties? Here, having seen a form with the eye, a bhikkhu does not grasp its marks and features. Since, if he left the eye faculty unrestrained, bad unwholesome states of longing and dejection might invade him, he practices restraint over it; he guards the eye faculty, he undertakes the restraint of the eye faculty. Having heard a sound with the ear \u2026 Having smelled an odor with the nose \u2026 Having tasted a taste with the tongue \u2026 Having felt a tactile object with the body \u2026 Having cognized a mental phenomenon with the mind, a bhikkhu does not grasp its marks and features. Since, if he left the mind faculty unrestrained, bad unwholesome states of longing and dejection\u00a0might invade him, he practices restraint over it; he guards the mind faculty, he undertakes the restraint of the mind faculty. It is in this way that a bhikkhu guards the doors of the sense faculties.<\/p>\n

(3) \u201cAnd how does a bhikkhu observe moderation in eating? Here, reflecting carefully, a bhikkhu consumes food neither for amusement nor for intoxication nor for the sake of physical beauty and attractiveness, but only for the support and maintenance of this body, for avoiding harm, and for assisting the spiritual life, considering: \u2018Thus I shall terminate the old feeling and not arouse a new feeling, and I shall be healthy and blameless and dwell at ease.\u2019 It is in this way that a bhikkhu observes moderation in eating.<\/p>\n

(4) \u201cAnd how is a bhikkhu intent on wakefulness? Here, during the day, while walking back and forth and sitting, a bhikkhu purifies his mind of obstructive qualities. In the first watch of the night, while walking back and forth and sitting, he purifies his mind of obstructive qualities. In the middle watch of the night he lies down on the right side in the lion\u2019s posture, with one foot overlapping the other, mindful and clearly comprehending, after noting in his mind the idea of rising. a bhikkhu dwells thus ardently,

A bhikkhu who delights in heedfulness,
\nseeing the danger in heedlessness,
\nis incapable of decline:
\nhe is close to nibb\u0101na.<\/p>\n
