Listen and apply your mind well, I will speak.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes, sir,\u201d they replied. The Buddha said this:<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMendicants, what is the penetrative exposition of the teaching? Sensual pleasures should be known. And their source, diversity, result, cessation, and the practice that leads to their cessation should be known.<\/p>\n<p>Feelings should be known. And their source, diversity, result, cessation, and the practice that leads to their cessation should be known.<\/p>\n<p>Perceptions should be known. And their source, diversity, result, cessation, and the practice that leads to their cessation should be known.<\/p>\n<p>Defilements should be known. And their source, diversity, result, cessation, and the practice that leads to their cessation should be known.<\/p>\n<p>Deeds should be known. And their source, diversity, result, cessation, and the practice that leads to their cessation should be known.<\/p>\n<p>Suffering should be known. And its source, diversity, result, cessation, and the practice that leads to its cessation should be known.<\/p>\n<p>\u2018Sensual pleasures should be known. And their source, diversity, result, cessation, and the practice that leads to their cessation should be known.\u2019 That\u2019s what I said,\u00a0but why did I say it?\u00a0There are these five kinds of sensual stimulation.\u00a0Sights known by the eye, which are likable, desirable, agreeable, pleasant, sensual, and arousing.\u00a0Sounds known by the ear \u2026\u00a0Smells known by the nose \u2026\u00a0Tastes known by the tongue \u2026\u00a0Touches known by the body, which are likable, desirable, agreeable, pleasant, sensual, and arousing.\u00a0However, these are not sensual pleasures. In the training of the Noble One they\u2019re called \u2018kinds of sensual stimulation\u2019.<\/p>\n<p>Greedy intention is a person\u2019s sensual pleasure.<br \/>\nThe world\u2019s pretty things aren\u2019t sensual pleasures.<br \/>\nGreedy intention is a person\u2019s sensual pleasure.<br \/>\nThe world\u2019s pretty things stay just as they are,<br \/>\nbut a wise one removes desire for them.<\/p>\n<p>And what is the source of sensual pleasures?\u00a0Contact is their source.<\/p>\n<p>And what is the diversity of sensual pleasures?\u00a0The sensual desire for sights, sounds, smells, tastes, and touches are all different.\u00a0This is called the diversity of sensual pleasures.<\/p>\n<p>And what is the result of sensual pleasures?\u00a0When one who desires sensual pleasures creates a corresponding incarnation, partaking of either good or bad deeds\u2014this is called the result of sensual pleasures.<\/p>\n<p>And what is the cessation of sensual pleasures?\u00a0When contact ceases, sensual pleasures cease.\u00a0The practice that leads to the cessation of sensual pleasures is simply this noble eightfold path, that is:\u00a0right view, right thought, right speech, right action, right livelihood, right effort, right mindfulness, and right immersion.<\/p>\n<p>When a noble disciple understands sensual pleasures in this way\u2014and understands their source, diversity, result, cessation, and the practice that leads to their cessation\u2014they understand that this penetrative spiritual life is the cessation of sensual pleasures.\u00a0\u2018Sensual pleasures should be known. And their source, diversity, result, cessation, and the practice that leads to their cessation should be known.\u2019\u00a0That\u2019s what I said, and this is why I said it.<\/p>\n<p>\u2018Feelings should be known. And their source, diversity, result, cessation, and the practice that leads to their cessation should be known.\u2019\u00a0That\u2019s what I said, but why did I say it?\u00a0There are these three feelings:\u00a0pleasant, painful, and neutral.<\/p>\n<p>And what is the source of feelings?\u00a0Contact is their source.<\/p>\n<p>And what is the diversity of feelings?\u00a0There are pleasant feelings of the flesh, pleasant feelings not of the flesh, painful feelings of the flesh, painful feelings not of the flesh, neutral feelings of the flesh, and neutral feelings not of the flesh.\u00a0This is called the diversity of feelings.<\/p>\n<p>And what is the result of feelings?\u00a0When one who feels creates a corresponding incarnation, partaking of either good or bad deeds\u2014this is called the result of feelings.<\/p>\n<p>And what is the cessation of feelings?\u00a0When contact ceases, feelings cease.\u00a0The practice that leads to the cessation of feelings is simply this noble eightfold path, that is:\u00a0right view, right thought, right speech, right action, right livelihood, right effort, right mindfulness, and right immersion.<\/p>\n<p>When a noble disciple understands feelings in this way \u2026 they understand that this penetrative spiritual life is the cessation of feelings.\u00a0\u2018Feelings should be known. And their source, diversity, result, cessation, and the practice that leads to their cessation should be known.\u2019\u00a0That\u2019s what I said, but why did I say it?\u00a0There are these three defilements:\u00a0the defilements of sensuality, desire to be reborn, and ignorance.<\/p>\n<p>And what is the source of defilements?\u00a0Ignorance is the source of defilements.<\/p>\n<p>And what is the diversity of defilements?\u00a0There are defilements that lead to rebirth in hell, the animal realm, the ghost realm, the human world, and the world of the gods.\u00a0This is called the diversity of defilements.<\/p>\n<p>And what is the result of defilements?\u00a0When one who is ignorant creates a corresponding incarnation, partaking of either good or bad deeds\u2014this is called the result of defilements.<\/p>\n<p>And what is the cessation of defilements?\u00a0When ignorance ceases, defilements cease.\u00a0The practice that leads to the cessation of defilements is simply this noble eightfold path, that is:\u00a0right view, right thought, right speech, right action, right livelihood, right effort, right mindfulness, and right immersion.<\/p>\n<p>When a noble disciple understands defilements in this way \u2026 they understand that this penetrative spiritual life is the cessation of defilements.\u00a0\u2018Defilements should be known. And their source, diversity, result, cessation, and the practice that leads to their cessation should be known.\u2019\u00a0That\u2019s what I said, and this is why I said it.<\/p>\n<p>\u2018Deeds should be known. And their source, diversity, result, cessation, and the practice that leads to their cessation should be known.\u2019 That\u2019s what I said,\u00a0but why did I say it?\u00a0It is intention that I call deeds.\u00a0For after making a choice one acts\u00a0by way of body, speech, and mind.<\/p>\n<p>And what is the source of deeds?\u00a0Contact is their source.<\/p>\n<p>And what is the diversity of deeds?\u00a0There are deeds that lead to rebirth in hell, the animal realm, the ghost realm, the human world, and the world of the gods.\u00a0This is called the diversity of deeds.<\/p>\n<p>And what is the result of deeds?\u00a0The result of deeds is threefold, I say:\u00a0in this very life, on rebirth in the next life, or at some later time.\u00a0This is called the result of deeds.<\/p>\n<p>And what is the cessation of deeds?\u00a0When contact ceases, deeds cease.\u00a0The practice that leads to the cessation of deeds is simply this noble eightfold path, that is:\u00a0right view, right thought, right speech, right action, right livelihood, right effort, right mindfulness, and right immersion.<\/p>\n<p>When a noble disciple understands deeds in this way \u2026 they understand that this penetrative spiritual life is the cessation of deeds.\u00a0\u2018Deeds should be known. And their source, diversity, result, cessation, and the practice that leads to their cessation should be known.\u2019\u00a0That\u2019s what I said, and this is why I said it.<\/p>\n<p>\u2018Suffering should be known. And its source, diversity, result, cessation, and the practice that leads to its cessation should be known.\u2019 That\u2019s what I said, but why did I say it? Rebirth is suffering; old age is suffering; illness is suffering; death is suffering; sorrow, lamentation, pain, sadness, and distress are suffering; not getting what you wish for is suffering. In brief, the five grasping aggregates are suffering.<\/p>\n<p>And what is the source of suffering? Craving is the source of suffering.<\/p>\n<p>And what is the diversity of suffering? There is suffering that is severe, mild, slow to fade, and quick to fade. This is called the diversity of suffering.<\/p>\n<p>And what is the result of suffering? It\u2019s when someone who is overcome and overwhelmed by suffering sorrows and wails and laments, beating their breast and falling into confusion. Or else, overcome by that suffering, they begin an external search, wondering: \u2018Who knows one or two phrases to stop this suffering?\u2019 The result of suffering is either confusion or a search, I say. This is called the result of suffering.<\/p>\n<p>And what is the cessation of suffering? When craving ceases, suffering ceases. The practice that leads to the cessation of suffering is simply this noble eightfold path, that is: right view, right thought, right speech, right action, right livelihood, right effort, right mindfulness, and right immersion.<\/p>\n<p>When a noble disciple understands suffering in this way \u2026 they understand that this penetrative spiritual life is the cessation of suffering. \u2018Suffering should be known. The diversity in feeling should be known. The result of feeling should be known. The cessation of feeling should be known. In reference to what was it said?<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThere are these five strings of sensuality: forms cognizable via the eye\u2014agreeable, pleasing, charming, endearing, enticing, linked to sensual desire; sounds cognizable via the ear\u2026 aromas cognizable via the nose\u2026 flavors cognizable via the tongue\u2026 tactile sensations cognizable via the body\u2014agreeable, pleasing, charming, endearing, enticing, linked to sensual desire. But these are not sensuality. They are called strings of sensuality in the discipline of the noble ones.<\/p>\n<p>The passion for his resolves is a man\u2019s sensuality,<br \/>\nnot the beautiful sensual pleasures<br \/>\n\u2003\u2003\u2003found in the world.<\/p>\n<p>The passion for his resolves is a man\u2019s sensuality.<br \/>\nThe beauties remain as they are in the world,<br \/>\nwhile, in this regard,<br \/>\n\u2003\u2003\u2003the enlightened<br \/>\n\u2003\u2003\u2003subdue their desire.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAnd what is the cause by which sensuality comes into play? Contact is the cause by which sensuality comes into play.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAnd what is the diversity in sensuality? Sensuality with regard to forms is one thing, sensuality with regard to sounds is another, sensuality with regard to aromas is another, sensuality with regard to flavors is another, sensuality with regard to tactile sensations is another. This is called the diversity in sensuality.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAnd what is the result of sensuality? One who wants sensuality produces a corresponding state of existence, on the side of merit or demerit. This is called the result of sensuality.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAnd what is the cessation of sensuality? There is the feeling of neither pleasure nor pain not connected with the baits of the world. This is called the diversity in feeling.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAnd what is the result of feeling? One who feels a feeling produces a corresponding state of existence, on the side of merit or demerit. This is called the result of feeling.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAnd what is the cessation of feeling? There are effluents that lead to hell, those that lead to the animal womb, those that lead to the realm of the hungry ghosts, those that lead to the human world, those that lead to the world of the devas. One who is immersed in ignorance produces a corresponding state of existence, on the side of merit or demerit. This is called the result of effluents.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAnd what is the cessation of effluents? Intending, one does kamma by way of body, speech, &#038; intellect.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAnd what is the cause by which kamma comes into play? Contact is the cause by which kamma comes into play.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAnd what is the diversity in kamma? There is kamma to be experienced in hell, kamma to be experienced in the realm of common animals, kamma to be experienced in the realm of the hungry ghosts, kamma to be experienced in the human world, kamma to be experienced in the world of the devas. This is called the diversity in kamma.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAnd what is the result of kamma? The result of kamma is of three sorts, I tell you: that which arises right here &#038; now, that which arises later (in this lifetime), and that which arises following that. This is called the result of kamma.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAnd what is the cessation of kamma? From the cessation of contact is the cessation of kamma; and just this noble eightfold path\u2014right view, right resolve, right speech, right action, right livelihood, right effort, right mindfulness, right concentration\u2014is the way leading to the cessation of kamma.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNow when a disciple of the noble ones discerns kamma in this way, the cause by which kamma comes into play in this way, the diversity in kamma in this way, the result of kamma in this way, the cessation of kamma in this way, &#038; the path of practice leading to the cessation of kamma in this way, then he discerns this penetrative holy life as the cessation of kamma.<\/p>\n<p>\u201c\u2018Kamma should be known. The cause by which stress comes into play should be known. The diversity in stress should be known. The result of stress should be known. The cessation of stress should be known. The path of practice for the cessation of stress should be known.\u2019 Thus it has been said. In reference to what was it said?<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBirth is stress, aging is stress, death is stress; sorrow, lamentation, pain, distress, &#038; despair are stress; association with what is not loved is stress, separation from what is loved is stress, not getting what is wanted is stress. In short, the five clinging-aggregates are stress.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAnd what is the cause by which stress comes into play? Craving is the cause by which stress comes into play.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAnd what is the diversity in stress? There is major stress &#038; minor, slowly fading &#038; quickly fading. This is called the diversity in stress.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAnd what is the result of stress? There are some cases in which a person overcome with pain, his mind exhausted, grieves, mourns, laments, beats his breast, &#038; becomes bewildered. Or one overcome with pain, his mind exhausted, comes to search outside, \u2018Who knows a way or two to the cessation of this pain?\u2019 I tell you, monks, that stress results either in bewilderment or in search. This is called the result of stress.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAnd what is the cessation of stress? From the cessation of craving is the cessation of stress; and just this noble eightfold path\u2014right view, right resolve, right speech, right action, right livelihood, right effort, right mindfulness, right concentration\u2014is the path of practice leading to the cessation of stress.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNow when a disciple of the noble ones discerns stress in this way, the cause by which stress comes into play in this way, the diversity in stress in this way, the result of stress in this way, the cessation of stress in this way, &#038; the path of practice leading to the cessation of stress in this way, then he discerns this penetrative holy life as the cessation of stress.<\/p>\n<p>\u201c\u2018Stress should be known.
