Then Mah\u0101n\u0101ma the Sakyan went up to the Buddha, bowed, sat down to one side, and said to him,\u00a0\u201cFor a long time, sir, I have understood your teaching like this:\u00a0\u2018Greed, hate, and delusion are corruptions of the mind.\u2019\u00a0Despite understanding this, sometimes my mind is occupied by thoughts of greed, hate, and delusion.\u00a0I wonder what qualities remain in me that I have such thoughts?\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cMah\u0101n\u0101ma, there is a quality that remains in you that makes you have such thoughts.\u00a0For if you had given up that quality you would not still be living at home and enjoying sensual pleasures.\u00a0But because you haven\u2019t given up that quality you are still living at home and enjoying sensual pleasures.<\/p>\n

Sensual pleasures give little gratification and much suffering and distress, and they are all the more full of drawbacks.\u00a0Even though a noble disciple has clearly seen this with right wisdom, so long as they don\u2019t achieve the rapture and bliss that are apart from sensual pleasures and unskillful qualities, or something even more peaceful than that,\u00a0they might still return to sensual pleasures.\u00a0But when they do achieve that rapture and bliss, or something more peaceful than that,\u00a0they will not return to sensual pleasures.<\/p>\n

Before my awakening\u2014when I was still unawakened but intent on awakening\u2014I too clearly saw with right wisdom that:\u00a0\u2018Sensual pleasures give little gratification and much suffering and distress, and they are all the more full of drawbacks.\u2019\u00a0But so long as I didn\u2019t achieve the rapture and bliss that are apart from sensual pleasures and unskillful qualities, or something even more peaceful than that,\u00a0I didn\u2019t announce that I would not return to sensual pleasures.\u00a0But when I did achieve that rapture and bliss, or something more peaceful than that,\u00a0I announced that I would not return to sensual pleasures.<\/p>\n

And what is the gratification of sensual pleasures?\u00a0There are these five kinds of sensual stimulation.\u00a0What five?\u00a0Sights known by the eye that are likable, desirable, agreeable, pleasant, sensual, and arousing.\u00a0Sounds known by the ear \u2026\u00a0Smells known by the nose \u2026\u00a0Tastes known by the tongue \u2026\u00a0Touches known by the body that are likable, desirable, agreeable, pleasant, sensual, and arousing.\u00a0These are the five kinds of sensual stimulation.\u00a0The pleasure and happiness that arise from these five kinds of sensual stimulation: this is the gratification of sensual pleasures.<\/p>\n

And what is the drawback of sensual pleasures?\u00a0It\u2019s when a gentleman earns a living by means such as\u00a0computing, accounting, calculating, farming, trade, raising cattle, archery, government service, or one of the professions.\u00a0But they must face cold and heat, being hurt by the touch of flies, mosquitoes, wind, sun, and reptiles, and risking death from hunger and thirst.\u00a0This is a drawback of sensual pleasures apparent in this very life, a mass of suffering caused by sensual pleasures.<\/p>\n

That gentleman might try hard, strive, and make an effort, but fail to earn any money.\u00a0If this happens, they sorrow and wail and lament, beating their breast and falling into confusion, saying: \u2018Oh, my hard work is wasted. My efforts are fruitless!\u2019\u00a0This too is a drawback of sensual pleasures apparent in this very life, a mass of suffering caused by sensual pleasures.<\/p>\n

That gentleman might try hard, strive, and make an effort, and succeed in earning money.\u00a0But they experience pain and sadness when they try to protect it, thinking:\u00a0\u2018How can I prevent my wealth from being taken by rulers or bandits, consumed by fire, swept away by flood, or taken by unloved heirs?\u2019\u00a0And even though they protect it and ward it, rulers or bandits take it, or fire consumes it, or flood sweeps it away, or unloved heirs take it.\u00a0They sorrow and wail and lament, beating their breast and falling into confusion:\u00a0\u2018What used to be mine is gone.\u2019\u00a0This too is a drawback of sensual pleasures apparent in this very life, a mass of suffering caused by sensual pleasures.<\/p>\n

Furthermore, for the sake of sensual pleasures kings fight with kings, aristocrats fight with aristocrats, brahmins fight with brahmins, and householders fight with householders. A mother fights with her child, child with mother, father with child, and child with father. Brother fights with brother, brother with sister, sister with brother, and friend fights with friend.\u00a0Once they\u2019ve started quarreling, arguing, and disputing, they attack each other with fists, stones, rods, and swords,\u00a0resulting in death and deadly pain.\u00a0This too is a drawback of sensual pleasures apparent in this very life, a mass of suffering caused by sensual pleasures.<\/p>\n

Furthermore, for the sake of sensual pleasures they don their sword and shield, fasten their bow and arrows, and plunge into a battle massed on both sides, with arrows and spears flying and swords flashing.\u00a0There they are struck with arrows and spears, and their heads are chopped off,\u00a0resulting in death and deadly pain.\u00a0This too is a drawback of sensual pleasures apparent in this very life, a mass of suffering caused by sensual pleasures.<\/p>\n

Furthermore, for the sake of sensual pleasures they don their sword and shield, fasten their bow and arrows, and charge wetly plastered bastions, with arrows and spears flying and swords flashing.\u00a0There they are struck with arrows and spears, splashed with dung, crushed with spiked blocks, and their heads are chopped off,\u00a0resulting in death and deadly pain.\u00a0This too is a drawback of sensual pleasures apparent in this very life, a mass of suffering caused by sensual pleasures.<\/p>\n

Furthermore, for the sake of sensual pleasures they break into houses, plunder wealth, steal from isolated buildings, commit highway robbery, and commit adultery.\u00a0The rulers would arrest them and subject them to various punishments\u2014whipping, caning, and clubbing; cutting off hands or feet, or both; cutting off ears or nose, or both; the \u2018porridge pot\u2019, the \u2018shell-shave\u2019, the \u2018demon\u2019s mouth\u2019, the \u2018garland of fire\u2019, the \u2018burning hand\u2019, the \u2018grass blades\u2019, the \u2018bark dress\u2019, the \u2018antelope\u2019, the \u2018meat hook\u2019, the \u2018coins\u2019, the \u2018caustic pickle\u2019, the \u2018twisting bar\u2019, the \u2018straw mat\u2019; being splashed with hot oil, being fed to the dogs, being impaled alive, and being beheaded.\u00a0These result in death and deadly pain.\u00a0This too is a drawback of sensual pleasures apparent in this very life, a mass of suffering caused by sensual pleasures.<\/p>\n

Furthermore, for the sake of sensual pleasures, they conduct themselves badly by way of body, speech, and mind.\u00a0When their body breaks up, after death, they\u2019re reborn in a place of loss, a bad place, the underworld, hell.\u00a0This is a drawback of sensual pleasures to do with lives to come, a mass of suffering caused by sensual pleasures. \u2026<\/p>\n

Mah\u0101n\u0101ma, if that phenomenon was internally abandoned by you, you would not live a household life, and you would not indulge in sensuality. Mah\u0101n\u0101ma, because that phenomenon has not been internally abandoned by you, you still live a household life and you still indulge in sensuality.<\/p>\n

\u201c\u2018Sensuality has little gratification \u2013 it brings much suffering and much anguish; the drawback here is greater.\u2019 Mah\u0101n\u0101ma, even if a disciple of the noble ones has truly seen this well with correct wisdom, if he does not attain rapture and happiness apart from sensuality and unwholesome phenomena1\u00a0or something more peaceful than that2, then he does not turn away from sensuality. \u201cMah\u0101n\u0101ma, there is still a dhamma unabandoned in you, owing to which at times ideas\u00a0(dhammas)\u00a0of greed\u2026 of hate\u2026 of delusion invade your mind and remain; for were that dhamma already abandoned by you in yourself you would not be living the house life, you would not be enjoying sensual desires. It is because there is still that dhamma unabandoned by you in yourself that you are living the house life and enjoying sensual desires.<\/p>\n

These are the five cords of sensual desire.<\/p>\n

\u201cNow the pleasure and joy that arise dependent on those five cords of sensual desire are the gratification in the case of sensual desires.<\/p>\n

(ii) \u201cAnd what is the danger in the case of sensual desires?<\/p>\n

\u201cHere, bhikkhus, on account of the calling by which a clansman makes a living, whether checking or accounting or calculating or ploughing or trading or cattle farming or archery or as a king\u2019s man, or whatever the calling may be, he has to face cold, he has to face heat, he is harassed by mosquitoes and flies, wind and sun and creeping things, risking death by hunger and thirst.<\/p>\n

\u201cNow this danger in the case of sensual desires,\u00a0this\u00a0mass of suffering visible here and now, has sensual desires for its reason, sensual desires for its source, sensual desires for its cause, the reason being simply sensual desires.<\/p>\n

\u201cIf no property comes to the clansman while he works and strives and makes efforts thus, he sorrows, grieves and laments, beating his breast he weeps till he is distraught,\u00a0crying:\u00a0\u2018My work is vain, my work is fruitless!\u2019<\/p>\n

\u201cAgain, with sensual desires for the reason, sensual desires for the source, sensual desires for the cause, the reason being simply sensual desires, kings quarrel with kings, warrior-nobles with warrior-nobles, divines with divines, householders with householders, mother with child, child with mother, father with child, child with father, brother with brother, brother with sister, friend with friend. And here in their quarrels, brawls and disputes they attack each other with fists or with clods or with sticks or with knives, whereby they incur death or deadly suffering.<\/p>\n

\u201cAgain, with sensual desires for the reason\u2026\u00a0men\u00a0take swords and shields and buckle on bows and quivers, and they charge into battle massed in double array with arrows and spears flying and swords flashing; and there they are wounded by arrows and spears, and their heads are cut off by swords, whereby they incur death or deadly suffering.<\/p>\n

\u201cAgain, with sensual desires for the reason\u2026\u00a0men\u00a0break in and steal, turn bandit, rob highways, seduce others\u2019 wives; so that when they are caught, kings have many kinds of torture inflicted on them.<\/p>\n

\u201cThey have them flogged with whips, beaten with canes, beaten with clubs, they have their hands cut off, their feet cut off, their hands and feet cut off, their ears cut off, their noses cut off, their ears and noses cut off, they have them subjected to the \u2018porridge-pot\u2019, to the \u2018polished-shell shave\u2019, to the \u2018eclipse\u2019s mouth\u2019, to the \u2018fiery wreath\u2019, to the \u2018fiery hand\u2019, to the \u2018blades of grass\u2019, to the \u2018bark dress\u2019, to the \u2018antelope\u2019, to the \u2018meat-hooks\u2019, to the \u2018coins\u2019, to the \u2018lye-pickling\u2019, to the \u2018pivoting-pin\u2019, to the \u2018rolled-up palliasse\u2019, and they have them splashed with boiling oil, and they have them thrown to dogs to devour, and they have them impaled alive on stakes, and they have their heads cut off with swords, whereby they incur death or deadly suffering.<\/p>\n

\u201cAgain, with sensual desires for the reason, sensual desires for the source, sensual desires for the cause, the reason being simply sensual desires,\u00a0men\u00a0indulge in misconduct of body, speech and mind: on the dissolution of the body, after death, they reappear in states of deprivation, in an unhappy destination, in perdition, even in hell. Now this danger in the case of sensual desires, this mass of suffering in lives to come, has sensual desires for its reason, sensual desires for its source, sensual desires for its cause, the reason being simply sensual desires. \u2026<\/p>\n

At one time the Lord was staying among the Sakyans at Kapilavatthu in Nigrodha’s park. Then Mah\u0101n\u0101ma the Sakyan approached the Lord; having approached, having greeted the Lord, he sat down at a respectful distance. As Mah\u0101n\u0101ma the Sakyan was sitting down at a respectful distance, he spoke thus to the Lord:<\/p>\n

\u201cFor a long time, Lord, I have thus understood\u00a0Dhamma\u00a0taught by the Lord: \u2018Greed is a depravity of the mind, aversion is a depravity of the mind, confusion is a depravity of the mind.\u2019 It is thus that I, Lord, understand\u00a0Dhamma\u00a0taught by the Lord: \u2018Greed is a depravity of the mind, aversion is a depravity of the mind, confusion is a depravity of the mind.\u2019 But at times things belonging to greed, taking hold of my mind, persist, and things belonging to aversion, taking hold of my mind, persist, and things belonging\u00a0to confusion, taking hold of my mind, persist. It occurred to me thus, Lord: \u2018Now what can be the quality in me, not got rid of subjectively, on account of which at times things belonging to greed, taking hold of my mind, persist, and things belonging to aversion, taking hold of my mind, persist, and things belonging to confusion, taking hold of my mind, persist?\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cIndeed there is a quality in you, Mah\u0101n\u0101ma, not got rid of subjectively, on account of which at times things belonging to greed, taking hold of your mind, persist, and things belonging to aversion, taking hold of your mind, persist, and things belonging to confusion, taking hold of your mind, persist. But this quality could be got rid of subjectively by you, Mah\u0101n\u0101ma, if you would not dwell in a house, if you would not enjoy pleasures of the senses. But inasmuch as this quality, Mah\u0101n\u0101ma, is not got rid of by you subjectively, therefore you dwell in a house and enjoy pleasures of the senses. Pleasures of the senses are of little satisfaction, of much ill, of much tribulation wherein is more peril.<\/p>\n

Yet if this, Mah\u0101n\u0101ma, comes to be well seen as it really is, through perfect intuitive wisdom by an ariyan disciple, but if he does not come to rapture and joy apart from pleasures of the senses, apart from unskilled states of mind, or to something better than that, then he is not yet one unseduced by pleasures of the senses. But when, Mah\u0101n\u0101ma, an ariyan disciple thinks: \u2018Pleasures of the senses are of little satisfaction, of much ill, of much tribulation wherein is more peril.\u2019 and if this comes to be well seen, as it really is, through perfect intuitive wisdom by the ariyan disciple, and if he comes to rapture and joy apart from pleasures of the senses, apart from unskilled states of mind, and to something better than that, then he is one who is not seduced by pleasures of the senses.<\/p>\n

And I too,\u00a0Mah\u0101n\u0101ma, before my awakening while I was still the bodhisatta, not fully awakened, thought: \u2018Pleasures of the senses are of little satisfaction, of much ill, of much tribulation wherein is more peril.\u2019 and although this came to be well seen thus, as it really is, through perfect intuitive wisdom, I came to no rapture and joy apart from pleasures of the senses, apart from unskilled states of mind, nor to anything better than that. So I was conscious that I was not yet one unseduced by pleasures of the senses. But when, Mah\u0101n\u0101ma, I thought: \u2018Pleasures of the senses are of little\u00a0satisfaction, of much ill, of much tribulation wherein is more peril.\u2019 and when this was well seen thus, as it really is, through perfect intuitive wisdom, and I came to rapture and joy apart from the pleasures of the senses, apart from unskilled states of mind, and to something better than that, then was I conscious that I was one not seduced by pleasures of the senses.<\/p>\n

And what, Mah\u0101n\u0101ma, is the satisfaction in pleasures of the senses? These five, Mah\u0101n\u0101ma, are the strands of sense-pleasures. What five? Material shapes cognisable by the eye, agreeable, pleasant, liked, enticing, connected with sensual pleasures, alluring. Sounds cognisable by the ear, agreeable, pleasant, liked, enticing, connected with sensual pleasures, alluring. Smells cognisable by the nose, agreeable, pleasant, liked, enticing, connected with sensual pleasures, alluring. Tastes cognisable by the tongue, agreeable, pleasant, liked, enticing, connected with sensual pleasures, alluring. Touches cognisable by the body, agreeable, pleasant, liked, enticing, connected with sensual pleasures, alluring. These, Mah\u0101n\u0101ma, are the five strands of sense-pleasures. Whatever pleasure, whatever happiness arises in consequence of these five strands of sense-pleasures, this is the satisfaction in sense-pleasures.<\/p>\n

And what, Mah\u0101n\u0101ma, is the peril in sense-pleasures? In this case, Mah\u0101n\u0101ma, a young man of family earns his living by some craft, such as reckoning on the fingers, such as calculation, such as computing, such as agriculture, such as being in a rajah’s service, such as by another craft. He is afflicted by the cold, he is afflicted by the heat, suffering from the touch of gadflies, mosquitoes, wind, sun, creeping things, dying of hunger and thirst. This, Mah\u0101n\u0101ma, is a peril in pleasures of the senses that is present, a stem of ill, having pleasures of the senses as the cause, having pleasures of the senses as the provenance, being a consequence of pleasures of the senses, the very cause of pleasures of the senses.<\/p>\n

If, Mah\u0101n\u0101ma, this young man of family rouses himself, exerts himself, strives thus, but if these possessions do not come to his hand, he grieves, mourns, laments, beating his breast and wailing, he falls into disillusionment, and thinks: \u2018Indeed my exertion is vain, indeed my striving is fruitless.\u2019 This too, Mah\u0101n\u0101ma, is a peril in the pleasures of the senses that is present, a stem of ill, having pleasures of the senses as the cause, having pleasures of the senses as the provenance, being a consequence of pleasures of the senses, the very cause of pleasures of the senses.<\/p>\n

If, Mah\u0101n\u0101ma, this young man of family rouses himself, exerts himself, strives thus, and these possessions come to his hand, he experiences suffering and sorrow in consequence of looking after them, and thinks: \u2018Now by what means may neither kings nor thieves take away my possessions, nor fire burn them, nor water carry them away, nor heirs whom I do not like take them away?\u2019 Although he looks after these possessions and guards them, kings do take them away or thieves take them away, or fire burns them or water carries them away, or heirs whom he does not like take them away. He grieves, mourns, laments, beating his breast and wailing, he falls into disillusionment, and thinks: \u2018I do not even have that which was mine.\u2019 This too, Mah\u0101n\u0101ma, is a peril in the pleasures of the senses that is present, a stem of ill, having pleasures of the senses as the cause, having pleasures of the senses as the provenance, being a consequence of pleasures of the senses, the very cause of pleasures of the senses.<\/p>\n

And again, Mah\u0101n\u0101ma, when sense-pleasures are the cause, sense-pleasures the provenance, sense-pleasures the consequence, the very cause of sense-pleasures, kings dispute with kings, nobles dispute with nobles, brahmans dispute with brahmans, householders dispute with householders, a mother disputes with her son, a son disputes with his mother, a father disputes with his son, a son disputes with his father, a brother disputes with a brother, a brother disputes with a sister, a sister disputes with a brother, a friend disputes with a friend. Those who enter into quarrel, contention, dispute and attack one another with their hands and with stones and with sticks and with weapons, these suffer dying then and pain like unto dying. These who wound with arrows and wound with knives and decapitate with their swords, these suffer dying then and pain like unto dying. This too, Mah\u0101n\u0101ma, is a peril in the pleasures of the senses that is present, a stem of ill, having pleasures of the senses as the cause, having pleasures of the senses as the provenance, being a consequence of pleasures of the senses, the very cause of pleasures of the senses.<\/p>\n

And again, Mah\u0101n\u0101ma, when sense-pleasures are the cause, sense-pleasures the provenance, sense-pleasures the consequence, the very cause of sense-pleasures, having taken sword and shield, having girded on bow and quiver, they leap on to the newly daubed ramparts, and arrows are hurled and knives are hurled and swords are flashing. Those who wound with arrows and wound with knives and pour boiling cow-dung over them and crush them with the (falling) portcullis and decapitate them with their swords, these suffer dying then and pain like unto dying. This too, Mah\u0101n\u0101ma, is a peril in the pleasures of the senses that is present, a stem of ill, having pleasures of the senses as the cause, having pleasures of the senses as the provenance, being a consequence of pleasures of the senses, the very cause of pleasures of the senses.<\/p>\n

And again, Mah\u0101n\u0101ma, when sense-pleasures are the cause, sense-pleasures the provenance, sense-pleasures the consequence, the very cause of sense-pleasures, they break into a house and carry off the booty and behave as a thief and wait in ambush and go to other men’s wives. Kings, having arrested such a one, deal out various punishments. They lash him with whips and they lash him with canes and they lash him with (birch) rods, and they cut off his hand, and they cut off his foot, and they cut off his hand and foot, and they cut off his ear, and they cut off his nose, and they cut off his ear and nose, and they give him the \u2018gruel-pot\u2019 punishment, and they give him the \u2018shell-tonsure\u2019 punishment, and they give him the \u2018Rahu’s mouth.\u2019 punishment, and they give him the \u2018fire-garland\u2019 punishment, and they give him the \u2018flaming hand\u2019 punishment, and they give him the \u2018hay-twist\u2019 punishment, and they give him the \u2018bark-dress\u2019 punishment, and they give him the \u2018antelope\u2019 punishment, and they give him the \u2018flesh-hooking\u2019 punishment, and they give him the \u2018disc-slice\u2019 punishment, and they give him the \u2018pickling process\u2019 punishment, and they give him the \u2018circling the pin.\u2019 punishment, and they give him the \u2018straw mattress.\u2019 punishment, and they spray him with boiling oil, give him as food to the dogs, impale him alive on stakes and decapitate him with a sword. And again, Mah\u0101n\u0101ma, when sense-pleasures are the cause, sense-pleasures the provenance, sense-pleasures the consequence, the very cause of sense-pleasures, they behave wrongly in body, they behave wrongly in speech, they behave wrongly in thought. These, having behaved wrongly in body, in speech, in thought, at the breaking up of the body after dying, arise in a sorrowful state, a bad bourn, the abyss, Niraya Hell. This, Mah\u0101n\u0101ma, is a peril in pleasures of the senses that is of the future, a stem of ill, having pleasures of the senses as the cause, having pleasures of the senses as the provenance, being a consequence of pleasures of the senses, the very cause of pleasures of the senses. \u2026<\/p>\n
