Since I do not speak thus, if one should ask me, \u2018Venerable sir, with what as condition does contact\u00a0come to be?\u2019 this would be a valid question. And the proper explanation would be, \u2018Consciousness is the food based on which there is the production of further existence in the future; and when that has come to be, then there are the six senses; and based on the six senses there is sense-contact.\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBhante, who contacts?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat is not a valid question,\u201d the Blessed One said. \u201cI do not say \u2018One contacts.\u2019 If I said, \u2018One contacts,\u2019 then this would be a valid question: \u2018Bhante, who contacts?\u2019 But I do not say that. Since I do not say that, if someone asked, \u2018Bhante, what is the condition for sense-contact?\u2019 then that would be a valid question. And the proper explanation would be, \u2018Based on craving there is grasping, and based on grasping there is existence.\u20192\u00a0\u2026this is how the entire mass of suffering arises.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHowever, Phagguna, when through dispassion the six senses completely cease, then sense-contact ceases; when sense-contact ceases, feeling ceases; when feeling ceases, craving ceases; when craving ceases, grasping ceases; when grasping ceases, existence ceases; when existence ceases, birth ceases; when birth ceases, decay, dying, sorrow, lamentation, pain, depression, and anguish cease.
