In consequence, with the breakup of the body, after death, he is reborn in the plane of misery, in a bad destination, in the lower world, in hell. There the wardens of hell grab him by both arms and show him to King Yama,\u00a0saying<\/span>: \u2018This person, your majesty, did not behave properly toward his mother and father; he did not behave properly toward ascetics and brahmins; and he did not honor the elders of the family. May your majesty inflict due punishment on him!\u2019<\/p>\n

\u201cThen King Yama says to him: \u2018But, good man, didn\u2019t you ever see among human beings a man or a woman, eighty, ninety or a hundred years of age, frail, bent like a roof bracket, crooked, wobbling as they go along leaning on a stick, ailing, youth gone, with broken teeth, with grey and scanty hair or bald, with wrinkled skin and blotched limbs?\u2019 And the man replies: \u2018Yes, lord, I have seen this.\u2019<\/p>\n

\u201cThen King Yama says to him: \u2018Good man, didn\u2019t it occur to you, an intelligent and mature person: \u201cI too am subject to old age, I am not exempt from old age. Let me now do good by body, speech, and mind\u201d?\u2019\u00a0\u2014\u2018No, lord, I could not. I was heedless.\u2019<\/p>\n

\u201cThen King Yama says: \u2018Through heedlessness, good man, you failed to do good by body, speech, or mind. Surely, they will treat you in a way that fits your heedlessness. That bad kamma of yours was not done by your mother or father, nor by your brother or sister, nor by your friends and companions, nor by your relatives and family members, nor by the deities, nor by ascetics and brahmins. Rather, you were the one who did that bad kamma, and you yourself will have to experience its result.\u2019<\/p>\n

They drive a red-hot iron stake through one hand and another red-hot iron stake through the other hand; they drive a red-hot iron stake through one foot and another red-hot iron stake through the other foot; they drive a red-hot iron stake through the middle of his chest. There he feels painful, racking, piercing feelings, yet he does not die so long as that bad kamma is not exhausted.<\/p>\n

\u201cNext the wardens of hell throw him down and pare him with axes. There he feels painful, racking, piercing feelings, yet he does not die so long as that bad kamma is not exhausted. Next the wardens of hell turn him upside down and pare him with adzes\u2026. Next the wardens of hell harness him to a chariot and drive him back and forth across ground that is burning, blazing, and glowing\u2026. Next the wardens of hell make him climb up and down a great mound of coals that are burning, blazing, and glowing\u2026. Next the wardens of hell turn him upside down and plunge him into a red-hot copper cauldron that is burning, blazing, and glowing. He is cooked there in a swirl of foam. And as he is being cooked there in a swirl of foam, he is swept now up, now down, and now across. There he feels painful, racking, piercing feelings, yet he does not die so long as that bad kamma is not exhausted.<\/p>\n

\u201cNext the wardens of hell throw him into the great hell. Now, bhikkhus, as to that great hell:<\/p>\n

\u201cIt has four corners and four doors
\nand is divided into separate compartments;
\nit is surrounded by iron ramparts
\nand shut in with an iron roof.<\/p>\n

\u201cIts floor as well is made of iron
\nand heated till it glows with fire.
\nThe range is a full hundred\u00a0yojanas<\/i>
\nwhich it ever covers pervasively.<\/p>\n

\u201cOnce, bhikkhus, in the past King Yama thought: \u2018Those in the world who do evil deeds are punished with such diverse tortures. Oh, that I might attain the human state! That a Tath\u0101gata, Arahant, Perfectly Enlightened One might arise in the world! That I might attend upon that Blessed One! That the Blessed One might teach me the Dhamma, and that I might come to understand his Dhamma!\u2019<\/p>\n

\u201cBhikkhus, I am not repeating something that I heard from another ascetic or brahmin, but rather I am speaking about a matter that I have actually known, seen, and understood myself.\u201d<\/p>\n

Though warned by the divine messengers,
\nthose people who remain heedless
\nsorrow for a long time,
\nhaving fared on to a lower realm.<\/p>\n

But those good people here who,
\nwhen warned by the divine messengers,
\nnever become heedless
\nin regard to the noble Dhamma;
\nwho, having seen the peril in clinging
\nas the origin of birth and death,
\nare liberated by non-clinging
\nin the extinction of birth and death:
\nthose happy ones have attained security;
\nthey have reached nibb\u0101na in this very life.
\nHaving overcome all enmity and peril,
\nthey have transcended all suffering.<\/p>\n

Then King Yama says,\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/span>\u2018Mister, did you not see among human beings an elderly woman or a man\u2014eighty, ninety, or a hundred years old\u2014bent double, crooked, leaning on a staff, trembling as they walk, ailing, past their prime, with teeth broken, hair grey and scanty or bald, skin wrinkled, and limbs blotchy?\u2019<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

They say,\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/span>\u2018I saw that, sir.\u2019<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

Then King Yama says,\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/span>\u2018Mister, did it not occur to you\u2014being sensible and mature\u2014<\/span><\/span><\/span>\u201cI, too, am liable to grow old. Now, about that Great Hell:<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

\u2018Four are its corners, four its doors,
\nneatly divided in equal parts.
\nSurrounded by an iron wall,
\nof iron is its roof.<\/p>\n

The ground is even made of iron,
\nit burns with fierce fire.
\nThe heat forever radiates
\na hundred leagues around.\u2019<\/p>\n

Once upon a time, King Yama thought,\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/span>\u2018Those who do such bad deeds in the world receive these many different punishments.\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/span>Oh, I hope I may be reborn as a human being! And that a Realized One\u2014a perfected one, a fully awakened Buddha\u2014arises in the world! And that I may pay homage to the Buddha!\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/span>Then the Buddha can teach me Dhamma, so that I may understand his teaching.\u2019<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

Now, I don\u2019t say this because I\u2019ve heard it from some other ascetic or brahmin. I only say it because I\u2019ve known, seen, and realized it for myself.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

Those people who are negligent,
\nwhen warned by the gods\u2019 messengers:
\na long time they sorrow,
\nwhen they go to that wretched place.<\/p>\n

But those good and peaceful people,
\nwhen warned by the god\u2019s messengers,
\nnever neglect
\nthe teaching of the noble ones.<\/p>\n

Seeing the peril in grasping,
\nthe origin of birth and death,
\nthe unattached are freed
\nwith the ending of birth and death.<\/p>\n

Happy, they\u2019ve come to a safe place,
\nextinguished in this very life.
\nThey\u2019ve gone beyond all threats and perils,
\nand risen above all suffering.\u201d<\/p>\n
