At one time the Buddha was staying in the land of the Vajjis at the village of Ko\u1e6di.\u00a0There the Buddha addressed the mendicants:\u00a0\u201cMendicants, not understanding and not penetrating four noble truths, both you and I have wandered and transmigrated for such a very long time.<\/p>\n

What four?\u00a0The noble truths of suffering,\u00a0the origin of suffering,\u00a0the cessation of suffering,\u00a0and the practice that leads to the cessation of suffering.\u00a0These noble truths of suffering, origin, cessation, and the path have been understood and comprehended. Craving for continued existence has been cut off; the attachment to continued existence is ended; now there\u2019ll be no more future lives.\u201d<\/p>\n

That is what the Buddha said.\u00a0Then the Holy One, the Teacher, went on to say:<\/p>\n

\u201cBecause of not truly seeing
\nthe four noble truths,
\nwe have transmigrated for a long time
\nfrom one rebirth to the next.
\nBut now that these truths have been seen,
\nthe attachment to rebirth is eradicated.

\u201cThat noble truth of suffering, bhikkhus, has been understood and penetrated. That noble truth of the origin of suffering has been understood and penetrated. Craving for existence has been cut off; the conduit to existence has been destroyed; now there is no more renewed existence.\u201d<\/p>\n
