Now at that time Ve\u1e37uka\u1e47\u1e6dak\u012b, Nanda\u2019s mother, was preparing a religious donation for the mendicant Sa\u1e45gha headed by S\u0101riputta and Moggall\u0101na.\u00a0The Buddha saw her doing this, with his clairvoyance that is purified and superhuman,\u00a0and he addressed the mendicants:<\/p>\n

\u201cThis Ve\u1e37uka\u1e47\u1e6dak\u012b, Nanda\u2019s mother, is preparing a religious donation for the mendicant Sa\u1e45gha headed by S\u0101riputta and Moggall\u0101na.<\/p>\n

And how does a religious donation have six factors?\u00a0Three factors apply to the donor and three to the recipients.<\/p>\n

What three factors apply to the donor?\u00a0It\u2019s when a donor is in a good mood before giving, while giving they feel confident, and after giving they\u2019re uplifted.\u00a0These three factors apply to the donor.<\/p>\n

What three factors apply to the recipients?\u00a0It\u2019s when the recipients are free of greed, hate, and delusion, or practicing to be free of them.\u00a0These three factors apply to the recipients.<\/p>\n

Thus three factors apply to the donor and three to the recipients.\u00a0That\u2019s how a religious donation has six factors.<\/p>\n

It\u2019s not easy to grasp the merit of such an offering by saying that\u00a0this is the extent of their overflowing merit, overflowing goodness that nurtures happiness and is conducive to heaven, ripening in happiness and leading to heaven. And it leads to what is likable, desirable, agreeable, to welfare and happiness.\u00a0It\u2019s simply reckoned as an incalculable, immeasurable, great mass of merit.<\/p>\n

It\u2019s like trying to grasp how much water is in the ocean. It\u2019s not easy to say\u00a0how many gallons, how many hundreds, thousands, hundreds of thousands of gallons there are.\u00a0It\u2019s simply reckoned as an incalculable, immeasurable, great mass of water.\u00a0In the same way, it\u2019s not easy to grasp the merit of such an offering \u2026<\/p>\n

A good mood before giving,
\nconfidence while giving,
\nfeeling uplifted after giving:
\nthis is the perfect sacrifice.<\/p>\n

Free of greed, free of hate,
\nfree of delusion, undefiled;
\nthis is the field for the perfect sacrifice,
\nthe disciplined spiritual practitioners.<\/p>\n

After rinsing,
\nyou give with your own hands.
\nThis sacrifice is very fruitful
\nfor both yourself and others.<\/p>\n

When an intelligent, faithful person,
\nsacrifices like this, with a mind of letting go,
\nthat astute one is reborn
