what I heard.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMendicants, when a god is due to pass away from the realm of the gods, five warning signs appear.\u00a0Their flower-garlands wither; their clothes become soiled; they sweat from the armpits; their physical appearance deteriorates; and they no longer delight in their heavenly throne.\u00a0When the other gods know that that god is due to pass away, they wish them well in three ways:\u00a0\u2018Sir, may you go from here to a good place!<\/p>\n<p>When you have gone to a good place, may you be blessed with good fortune!<\/p>\n<p>When you have been blessed with good fortune, may you become well grounded!\u2019<\/p>\n<p>When he said this, one of the mendicants said to the Buddha,\u00a0\u201cSir, what do the gods reckon to be going to a good place?<\/p>\n<p>What do they reckon to be blessed with good fortune?<\/p>\n<p>What do they reckon to become well grounded?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt is human existence, mendicant, that the gods reckon to be going to a good place.<\/p>\n<p>When a human being gains faith in the teaching and training proclaimed by the Realized One,\u00a0that is what the gods reckon to be blessed with good fortune.<\/p>\n<p>When that faith in the Realized One is settled, rooted, and planted deep; when it\u2019s strong and can\u2019t be shifted by any ascetic or brahmin or god or M\u0101ra or Brahm\u0101 or by anyone in the world,\u00a0that is what the gods reckon to become well grounded.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The Buddha spoke this matter.\u00a0On this it is said:<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhen, with the fading of life,<br \/>\na god passes from the realm of the gods,<br \/>\nthe gods utter three criesof well-wishing:<\/p>\n<p>\u2018Sir, go from here to a good place,<br \/>\nin the company of humans.<br \/>\nAs a human being, gain supreme faith<br \/>\nin the true teaching.<\/p>\n<p>May that faith of yours be settled,<br \/>\nwith roots planted deep,<br \/>\nunfaltering all life long<br \/>\nin the true teaching so well proclaimed.<\/p>\n<p>Having given up bad conduct<br \/>\nby way of body,<br \/>\nspeech, and mind,<br \/>\nand whatever else is corrupt;<\/p>\n<p>and having done much good,<br \/>\nby way of body,<br \/>\nspeech, and mind,<br \/>\nlimitless, free of attachments;<\/p>\n<p>then, having made much worldly merit<br \/>\nby giving gifts,<br \/>\nestablish other colleagues<br \/>\nin the true teaching, the spiritual life.\u2019<\/p>\n<p>It is due to such compassion<br \/>\nthat when the gods know a god<br \/>\nis due to pass away, they wish them well:<br \/>\n\u2018Come back, god, The devas, observing the prognostic signs that this deva is due to pass away, encourage him in three things with the words: \u2018Go from here, friend, to a good bourn. Having gone to a good bourn, gain that which is good to gain. Having gained that which is good to gain, become firmly established in it.\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n<p>When this was said, a certain bhikkhu asked the Lord: \u201cVenerable sir, what is reckoned by the devas to be a good bourn? What is reckoned by the devas to be a gain that is good to gain? What is reckoned by the devas to be firmly established?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt is human existence, bhikkhus, that is reckoned by the devas to be a good bourn. When a human being acquires faith in the Dhamma-and-Discipline taught by the Tath\u0101gata, this is reckoned by the devas to be a gain that is good to gain.
