Then a mendicant went up to the Buddha \u2026 and asked him, \u201cSir, in such and such a monastery there\u2019s a mendicant who is junior and not well-known. He\u2019s sick, suffering, gravely ill. Please go to him out of compassion.\u201d<\/p>\n

When the Buddha heard that the mendicant was junior and ill, understanding that he was not well-known, he went to him. That mendicant saw the Buddha coming off in the distance and tried to rise on his cot.<\/p>\n

Then the Buddha said to that monk, \u201cIt\u2019s all right, mendicant, don\u2019t get up. There are some seats spread out, I will sit there.\u201d<\/p>\n

He sat on the seat spread out and said to the mendicant, \u201cI hope you\u2019re keeping well, mendicant; I hope you\u2019re alright. I hope that your pain is fading, not growing, that its fading is evident, not its growing.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cSir, I\u2019m not keeping well, I\u2019m not alright. \u2026<\/p>\n

I have no reason to blame myself when it comes to ethical conduct.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cIn that case, mendicant, why do you have remorse and regret?\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cBecause I understand that the Buddha has not taught the Dhamma merely for the sake of ethical purity.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cIf that is so, what exactly do you understand to be the purpose of teaching the Dhamma?\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cI understand that the Buddha has taught the Dhamma for the purpose of complete extinguishment by not grasping.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cGood, good, mendicant! It\u2019s good that you understand that I\u2019ve taught the Dhamma for the purpose of complete extinguishment by not grasping. For that is indeed the purpose.<\/p>\n

\u201cWhat do you think, mendicant? Is the eye permanent or impermanent?\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cImpermanent, sir.\u201d \u2026<\/p>\n

\u201cSeeing this, a learned noble disciple grows disillusioned with the eye \u2026 ear \u2026 nose \u2026 tongue \u2026 body \u2026 mind \u2026 mind consciousness \u2026 mind contact \u2026 They grow disillusioned with the painful, pleasant, or neutral feeling that arises conditioned by mind contact. Being disillusioned, desire fades away. When desire fades away they\u2019re freed. When they\u2019re freed, they know they\u2019re freed.<\/p>\n

They understand: \u2018Rebirth is ended, the spiritual journey has been completed, what had to be done has been done, there is no return to any state of existence.\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n

That is what the Buddha said. Satisfied, that mendicant was happy with what the Buddha said. And while this discourse was being spoken, the mind of that mendicant was freed from defilements by not grasping.<\/p>\n

Then, when the Blessed One heard the words \u201cnewly ordained\u201d and \u201csick,\u201d and understood that he was not a well-known bhikkhu, he went to him. That bhikkhu saw the Blessed One coming in the distance and stirred on his bed. The Blessed One said to him: \u201cEnough, bhikkhu, do not stir on your bed. There are these seats ready, I will sit down there.\u201d<\/p>\n

The Blessed One then sat down on the appointed seat and said to that bhikkhu: \u201cI hope you are bearing up, bhikkhu, I hope you are getting better. I hope that your painful feelings are subsiding and not increasing, and that their subsiding, not their increase, is to be discerned.\u201d<\/p>\n
