So I have heard.\u00a0At one time the Buddha was staying near S\u0101vatth\u012b in the Eastern Monastery, the stilt longhouse of Mig\u0101ra\u2019s mother.\u00a0Now at that time the dear and beloved granddaughter of Vis\u0101kh\u0101 Mig\u0101ra\u2019s Mother had just passed away.\u00a0Then, in the middle of the day, Vis\u0101kh\u0101 with wet clothes and hair went to the Buddha, bowed, and sat down.\u00a0The Buddha said to her,<\/p>\n

\u201cSo, Vis\u0101kh\u0101, where are you coming from in the middle of the day with wet clothes and hair?\u201d\u00a0\u201cSir, my beloved granddaughter has just passed away.\u00a0That\u2019s why I came here in the middle of the day with wet clothes and hair.\u201d\u00a0\u201cVis\u0101kh\u0101, would you like as many children and grandchildren as there are people in the whole of S\u0101vatth\u012b?\u201d\u00a0\u201cI would, sir.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cBut Vis\u0101kh\u0101, how many people pass away each day in S\u0101vatth\u012b?\u201d\u00a0\u201cEvery day, sir, there are ten people passing away in S\u0101vatth\u012b. Or else there are nine, eight, seven, six, five, four, three, two, or at least one person who passes away every day in S\u0101vatth\u012b.\u00a0S\u0101vatth\u012b is never without someone passing away.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cWhat do you think, Vis\u0101kh\u0101? Would there ever be a time when your clothes and hair were not wet?\u201d\u00a0\u201cNo, sir.\u00a0Enough, sir, with so many children and grandchildren.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cThose who have a hundred loved ones, Vis\u0101kh\u0101, have a hundred sufferings.\u00a0Those who have ninety loved ones, or eighty, seventy, sixty, fifty, forty, thirty, twenty, ten, nine, eight, seven, six, five,\u00a0four,\u00a0three,\u00a0two,\u00a0or one loved one have one suffering.\u00a0Those who have no loved ones have no suffering. They are free of sorrow, stains, and anguish I say.\u201d<\/p>\n

Then, understanding this matter, on that occasion the Buddha expressed this heartfelt sentiment:<\/p>\n

\u201cAll the sorrows and lamentations
\nand the countless forms of suffering in the world
\noccur because of those that we love;
\nwithout loved ones they do not occur.<\/p>\n

That\u2019s why those who have no loved ones at all in the world
\nare happy and free of grief.
\nSo aspiring to the sorrowless and stainless,

\u201cMy grand-daughter, who was beloved and dear, reverend Sir, has died. That is why, with wet clothes and hair, I am coming here in the middle of the day.\u201d<\/p>\n
