When he had spoken, I said to M\u0101ra:\u00a0\u2018Relax, Wicked One. The final extinguishment of the Realized One will be soon.\u00a0Three months from now the Realized One will finally be extinguished.\u2019\u00a0So today, just now at the C\u0101p\u0101la Tree-shrine, mindful and aware, I surrendered the life force.\u201d<\/p>\n

20. The Appeal of \u0100nanda<\/p>\n

When he said this, Venerable \u0100nanda said to the Buddha,\u00a0\u201cSir, may the Blessed One please remain for the eon! May the Holy One please remain for the eon! That would be for the welfare and happiness of the people, out of compassion for the world, for the benefit, welfare, and happiness of gods and humans.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cEnough now, \u0100nanda.\u00a0Do not beg the Realized One. Now is not the time to beg the Realized One.\u201d<\/p>\n

For a second time \u2026\u00a0For a third time, \u0100nanda said to the Buddha,\u00a0\u201cSir, may the Blessed One please remain for the eon! May the Holy One please remain for the eon! That would be for the welfare and happiness of the people, out of compassion for the world, for the benefit, welfare, and happiness of gods and humans.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201c\u0100nanda, do you have faith in the Realized One\u2019s awakening?\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cYes, sir.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cThen why do you keep pressing me up to the third time?\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cSir, I have heard and learned this in the presence of the Buddha:\u00a0\u2018Whoever has developed and cultivated the four bases of psychic power\u2014made them a vehicle and a basis, kept them up, consolidated them, and properly implemented them\u2014may, if they wish, live on for the eon or what\u2019s left of the eon.\u00a0The Realized One has developed and cultivated the four bases of psychic power, made them a vehicle and a basis, kept them up, consolidated them, and properly implemented them. If he wished, the Realized One could live on for the eon or what\u2019s left of the eon.\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cDo you have faith, \u0100nanda?\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cYes, sir.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cTherefore, \u0100nanda, the misdeed is yours alone, the mistake is yours alone. For even though the Realized One dropped such an obvious hint, such a clear sign, you didn\u2019t beg me to remain for the eon, or what\u2019s left of it.\u00a0If you had begged me, I would have refused you twice, but consented on the third time.\u00a0Therefore, \u0100nanda, the misdeed is yours alone, the mistake is yours alone.<\/p>\n

\u0100nanda, this one time I was staying near R\u0101jagaha, on the Vulture\u2019s Peak Mountain.\u00a0There I said to you:\u00a0\u2018\u0100nanda, R\u0101jagaha is lovely, and so is the Vulture\u2019s Peak.\u00a0Whoever has developed and cultivated the four bases of psychic power\u2014made them a vehicle and a basis, kept them up, consolidated them, and properly implemented them\u2014may, if they wish, live on for the eon or what\u2019s left of the eon.\u00a0The Realized One has developed and cultivated the four bases of psychic power, made them a vehicle and a basis, kept them up, consolidated them, and properly implemented them. \u0100nanda, this one time I was staying right there near R\u0101jagaha, at the Gotama banyan tree \u2026\u00a0at Bandit\u2019s Cliff \u2026\u00a0in the Sattapa\u1e47\u1e47i cave on the slopes of Vebhara \u2026\u00a0at the Black rock on the slopes of Isigili \u2026\u00a0in the Cool Grove, under the Snake\u2019s Hood Grotto \u2026\u00a0in the Hot Springs Monastery \u2026\u00a0in the Bamboo Grove, the squirrels\u2019 feeding ground \u2026\u00a0in J\u012bvaka\u2019s mango grove \u2026\u00a0in the Maddakucchi deer park \u2026<\/p>\n

And in each place I said to you:\u00a0\u2018\u0100nanda, R\u0101jagaha is lovely, and so are all these places. \u2026\u00a0If he wished, the Realized One could live on for the eon or what\u2019s left of the eon.\u2019\u00a0But you didn\u2019t get it, even though I dropped such an obvious hint, such a clear sign. You didn\u2019t beg me to remain for the eon, or what\u2019s left of it.<\/p>\n

\u0100nanda, this one time I was staying right here near Ves\u0101l\u012b, at the Udena shrine \u2026\u00a0at the Gotamaka shrine \u2026\u00a0at the Sattamba shrine \u2026\u00a0at the Many Sons shrine \u2026\u00a0at the S\u0101randada shrine \u2026\u00a0and just now, today at the C\u0101p\u0101la shrine. There I said to you:\u00a0\u2018\u0100nanda, Ves\u0101l\u012b is lovely. And the Udena, Gotamaka, Sattamba, Bahuputta, S\u0101randada, and C\u0101p\u0101la Tree-shrines are all lovely.\u00a0Whoever has developed and cultivated the four bases of psychic power\u2014made them a vehicle and a basis, kept them up, consolidated them, and properly implemented them\u2014may, if they wish, live on for the eon or what\u2019s left of the eon.\u00a0The Realized One has developed and cultivated the four bases of psychic power, made them a vehicle and a basis, kept them up, consolidated them, and properly implemented them. Did I not prepare for this when I explained that\u00a0we must be parted and separated from all we hold dear and beloved?\u00a0How could it possibly be so that what is born, created, conditioned, and liable to fall apart should not fall apart?\u00a0The Realized One has discarded, eliminated, released, given up, relinquished, and surrendered the life force. He has definitively stated:\u00a0\u2018The final extinguishment of the Realized One will be soon.\u00a0Three months from now the Realized One will finally be extinguished.\u2019\u00a0It\u2019s not possible for the Realized One, for the sake of life, to take back the life force once it has been given up like that.<\/p>\n

Come, \u0100nanda, let\u2019s go to the Great Wood, the hall with the peaked roof.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cYes, sir,\u201d \u0100nanda replied.<\/p>\n

So the Buddha went with \u0100nanda to the hall with the peaked roof, and said to him,\u00a0\u201cGo, \u0100nanda, gather all the mendicants staying in the vicinity of Ves\u0101l\u012b together in the assembly hall.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cYes, sir,\u201d replied \u0100nanda. He did what the Buddha asked, went up to him, bowed, stood to one side, and said to him,\u00a0\u201cSir, the mendicant Sa\u1e45gha has assembled. Please, sir, go at your convenience.\u201d<\/p>\n

Then the Buddha went to the assembly hall, where he sat on the seat spread out\u00a0and addressed the mendicants:<\/p>\n

\u201cSo, mendicants, having carefully memorized those things I have taught you from my direct knowledge, you should cultivate, develop, and make much of them so that this spiritual practice may last for a long time. That would be for the welfare and happiness of the people, out of compassion for the world, for the benefit, welfare, and happiness of gods and humans.\u00a0And what are those things I have taught from my direct knowledge?\u00a0They are: the four kinds of mindfulness meditation, the four right efforts, the four bases of psychic power, the five faculties, the five powers, the seven awakening factors, and the noble eightfold path.<\/p>\n

These are the things I have taught from my direct knowledge. Having carefully memorized them, you should cultivate, develop, and make much of them so that this spiritual practice may last for a long time. That would be for the welfare and happiness of the people, out of compassion for the world, for the benefit, welfare, and happiness of gods and humans.\u201d<\/p>\n

Then the Buddha said to the mendicants:<\/p>\n

\u201cCome now, mendicants, I say to you all:\u00a0\u2018Conditions fall apart. Persist with diligence.\u2019\u00a0The final extinguishment of the Realized One will be soon.\u00a0Three months from now the Realized One will finally be extinguished.\u201d<\/p>\n

That is what the Buddha said.\u00a0Then the Holy One, the Teacher, went on to say:<\/p>\n

\u201cI\u2019ve reached a ripe old age,
\nand little of my life is left.
\nHaving given it up, I\u2019ll depart;
\nI\u2019ve made a refuge for myself.<\/p>\n

Diligent and mindful,
\nbe of good virtues, mendicants!
\nWith well-settled thoughts,
\ntake good care of your minds.<\/p>\n

Whoever meditates diligently
\nin this teaching and training,
\ngiving up transmigration through rebirths,
\nwill make an end to suffering.\u201d<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

When this was said venerable \u0100nanda said this to the Gracious One: \u201cLet the Gracious One remain, reverend Sir, for the lifespan, let the Fortunate One remain for the lifespan, for the benefit of many people, for the happiness of many people, having compassion on the world, for the welfare, benefit, and happiness of Divinities and men.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cEnough, \u0100nanda, do not beg the Realised One, now is the wrong time, \u0100nanda, for begging the Realised One.\u201d<\/p>\n

For a second time venerable \u0100nanda said this to the Gracious One:<\/p>\n

\u201cLet the Gracious One remain, reverend Sir, for the lifespan, let the Fortunate One remain for the lifespan, for the benefit of many people, for the happiness of many people, having compassion on the world, for the welfare, benefit, and happiness of Divinities and men.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cEnough, \u0100nanda, do not beg the Realised One, now is the wrong time, \u0100nanda, for begging the Realised One.\u201d<\/p>\n

For a third time venerable \u0100nanda said this to the Gracious One:<\/p>\n

\u201cLet the Gracious One remain, reverend Sir, for the lifespan, let the Fortunate One remain for the lifespan, for the benefit of many people, for the happiness of many people, having compassion on the world, for the welfare, benefit, and happiness of Divinities and men.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cDo you, \u0100nanda, have faith in the Realised One\u2019s Awakening?\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cYes, reverend Sir,\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cThen why do you, \u0100nanda, harrass the Realised One up until the third time?\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cFace to face with me, reverend Sir, face to face I have heard\u00a0you say: \u2018Whoever has developed, \u0100nanda, made much of, carried on, established, maintained, augmented, and properly instigated the Four Paths to Power, could, if he wanted, remain for the lifespan or for what is left of the lifespan. The Realised One has developed, \u0100nanda, made much of, carried on, established, maintained, augmented, and properly instigated the Four Paths to Power. If he wanted, \u0100nanda, the Realised One could remain for the lifespan or for what is left of the lifespan.\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cDo you have faith, \u0100nanda?\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cYes, reverend Sir,\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cThen, \u0100nanda, there is this wrong-doing for you, there is this fault for you, in that you, despite such a gross hint being made by the Realised One, such a gross suggestion being made, was unable to penetrate it, and did not beg the Realised One,\u00a0saying:<\/p>\n

\u2018May the Gracious One remain, reverend Sir, for the lifespan; may the Fortunate One remain for the lifespan, for the benefit of many people, for the happiness of many people, out of compassion for the world, for the welfare, benefit, and happiness of Divinities and men.\u2019<\/p>\n

If you, \u0100nanda, had begged the Realised One twice the Realised One might have rejected your speech, but would have accepted it on the third occasion. So, \u0100nanda, there is this wrong-doing for you, there is this fault for you.<\/p>\n

24: \u0100nanda\u2019s Fault at R\u0101jagaha<\/p>\n

Were you not warned by me when I declared: \u2018There is alteration in, separation from, and changeability in all that is dear and appealing\u2019? How can it be otherwise, \u0100nanda, for that which is obtained, born, become, conditioned, subject to dissolution? It is not possible\u00a0to say\u00a0this: \u2018It should not dissolve\u2019. But this has been relinquished, cast out, let loose, abandoned by the Realised One, forsaken, the life-process that has been given up. For sure this word was spoken by the Realised One:<\/p>\n

\u2018Not long now there will be the Realised One\u2019s Final Emancipation, after the passing of three months the Realised One will attain Final Emancipation.\u2019 The Realised One cannot for the sake of life go back on that, it is not possible.<\/p>\n

26: The Thirty-Seven Things on the Side of Awakening<\/p>\n

Come \u0100nanda let us approach the Gabled House Hall in Great Wood.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cVery well, reverend Sir,\u201d venerable \u0100nanda replied to the Gracious One. Then the Gracious One with venerable \u0100nanda approached the Gabled House Hall in Great Wood, and after approaching he addressed venerable \u0100nanda,\u00a0saying:<\/p>\n

\u201cGo, \u0100nanda, and whatever monks are living in dependence on Ves\u0101l\u012b assemble them in the Attendance Hall.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cVery well, reverend Sir,\u201d said venerable \u0100nanda, and after replying to the Gracious One and assembling whatever monks were living in dependence on Ves\u0101l\u012b in the Attendance Hall, he approached the Gracious One, and after approaching and worshipping the Gracious One, he stood at one side. While standing on one side, venerable \u0100nanda said this to the Gracious One: \u201cThe Community of monks has assembled, reverend Sir, now is the time, Gracious One, for whatever you are thinking.\u201d<\/p>\n

Then the Gracious One approached the Attendance Hall, and after approaching he sat down on the prepared seat. While sitting the Gracious One addressed the monks,\u00a0saying:<\/p>\n

\u201cTherefore, monks, whatever Teachings have, with deep knowledge, been taught by me, after grasping them well, you should practise, develop, and make a lot of them, so that the Spiritual Life may last long, and may endure for a long time, and that will be for the benefit of many people, for the happiness of many people, out of compassion for the world, for the welfare, benefit, and happiness of Divinities and men.<\/p>\n

And what are those Teachings that have, with deep knowledge, been taught by me, which after grasping them well, you should practise, develop, and make a lot of them, so that the Spiritual Life may last long, and may endure for a long time, that will be for the benefit of many people, for the happiness of many people, out of compassion for the world, for the welfare, benefit, and happiness of Divinities and men?<\/p>\n

They are as follows:<\/p>\n

The Four Ways of Attending to Mindfulness,<\/p>\n

the Four Right Strivings,<\/p>\n

the Four Paths to Power,<\/p>\n

the Five Faculties,<\/p>\n

the Five Strengths,<\/p>\n

the Seven Factors of Awakening,<\/p>\n

the Noble Eight-Fold Path.<\/p>\n

These, monks, are those Teachings that have, with deep knowledge, been taught by me, after grasping them well, you should practise, develop, and make a lot of them, so that the Spiritual Life may last long, and may endure for a long time, and that will be for the benefit of many people, for the happiness of many people, out of compassion for the world, for the welfare, benefit, and happiness of Divinities and men.\u201d<\/p>\n

Then the Gracious One addressed the monks,\u00a0saying:<\/p>\n

\u201cCome now, monks, for I tell you\u00a0all\u00a0conditioned things are subject to decay, strive on with heedfulness! Not long now there will be the Realised One\u2019s Final Emancipation, after the passing of three months the Realised One will attain Final Emancipation.\u201d<\/p>\n

The Gracious One said this, and after saying this, the Fortunate One, the Teacher, said something more:<\/p>\n

\u201cYouths and also the old, fools and also the wise,
\nRich and also the poor\u2014all end in death.
\nLike an earthen vessel made by a potter,
\nSmall and great, that which is baked and unbaked,
\nAll end in breakage, just so life\u00a0ends\u00a0in death.\u201d<\/p>\n

Then the Teacher, said something more:<\/p>\n

\u201cWell-matured, decayed, with little of my life remaining,
\nHaving abandoned\u00a0rebirth\u00a0I will go, having made myself a refuge.
\nBe heedful, mindful, and virtuous, monks,
\nWith well-reasoned thoughts, protect your minds.<\/p>\n

Whoever in this Teaching and Discipline will live heedful,
