It was not long after S\u0101riputta and Moggall\u0101na had become fully extinguished.\u00a0Now, at that time the Buddha was sitting in the open, surrounded by the Sa\u1e45gha of mendicants.<\/p>\n<p>Then the Buddha looked around the Sa\u1e45gha of mendicants, who were silent. He addressed them:<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMendicants, this assembly seems empty to me now that S\u0101riputta and Moggall\u0101na have become fully extinguished.\u00a0When S\u0101riputta and Moggall\u0101na were alive, my assembly was never empty; I had no concern for any region where they stayed.\u00a0The Buddhas of the past or the future have pairs of chief disciples who are no better than\u00a0S\u0101riputta and Moggall\u0101na were to me.<\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s an incredible and amazing quality of such disciples\u00a0that they fulfill the Teacher\u2019s instructions and follow his advice. And they\u2019re liked and approved, respected and admired by the four assemblies.<\/p>\n<p>And it\u2019s an incredible and amazing quality of the Realized One\u00a0that when such a pair of disciples becomes fully extinguished he does not sorrow or lament.\u00a0How could it possibly be so that what is born, created, conditioned, and liable to wear out should not wear out?\u00a0That is not possible.<\/p>\n<p>Suppose there was a large tree standing with heartwood, and the largest branches fell off.\u00a0In the same way, in the great Sa\u1e45gha that stands with heartwood, S\u0101riputta and Moggall\u0101na have become fully extinguished.<\/p>\n<p>How could it possibly be so that what is born, created, conditioned, and liable to wear out should not wear out?\u00a0That is not possible.<\/p>\n<p>So mendicants, live as your own island, your own refuge, with no other refuge.
