\u201cHouseholder, these four things that are likable, desirable, and agreeable are hard to get in the world.\u00a0What four?\u00a0The first thing is the wish: \u2018May wealth come to me by legitimate means!\u2019<\/p>\n

The second thing, having got wealth by legitimate means, is the wish: \u2018May fame come to me, together with my family and teachers.\u2019<\/p>\n

The third thing, having got wealth and fame, is the wish: \u2018May I live long, keeping alive for a long time!\u2019<\/p>\n

The fourth thing, having got wealth, fame, and long life, is the wish: \u2018When my body breaks up, after death, may I be reborn in a good place, a heavenly realm!\u2019\u00a0These are the four things that are likable, desirable, and agreeable, but hard to get in the world.<\/p>\n

These next four things lead to the getting of those four things. What four? Accomplishment in faith, ethics, generosity, and wisdom.<\/p>\n

And what is accomplishment in faith?\u00a0It\u2019s when a noble disciple has faith in the Realized One\u2019s awakening:\u00a0\u2018That Blessed One is perfected, a fully awakened Buddha, accomplished in knowledge and conduct, holy, knower of the world, supreme guide for those who wish to train, teacher of gods and humans, awakened, blessed.\u2019\u00a0This is called accomplishment in faith.<\/p>\n

And what is accomplishment in ethics?\u00a0It\u2019s when a noble disciple doesn\u2019t kill living creatures, steal, commit sexual misconduct, lie, or take alcoholic drinks that cause negligence.\u00a0This is called accomplishment in ethics.<\/p>\n

And what is accomplishment in generosity?\u00a0It\u2019s when a noble disciple lives at home rid of the stain of stinginess, freely generous, open-handed, loving to let go, committed to charity, loving to give and to share.\u00a0This is called accomplishment in generosity.<\/p>\n

And what is accomplishment in wisdom?\u00a0When your heart is mastered by covetousness and immoral greed, you do what you shouldn\u2019t, and fail to do what you should.\u00a0Your fame and happiness fall to dust.\u00a0When your heart is mastered by ill will \u2026\u00a0dullness and drowsiness \u2026\u00a0restlessness and remorse \u2026\u00a0doubt, you do what you shouldn\u2019t, and fail to do what you should.\u00a0Your fame and happiness fall to dust.<\/p>\n

Knowing that \u2018covetousness and immoral greed are corruptions of the mind\u2019, that noble disciple gives them up.\u00a0Knowing that \u2018ill will \u2026\u2019 \u2026\u00a0\u2018dullness and drowsiness \u2026\u2019 \u2026\u00a0\u2018restlessness and remorse \u2026\u2019 \u2026\u00a0\u2018doubt is a corruption of the mind\u2019, that noble disciple gives it up.<\/p>\n

When a noble disciple has given up these things,\u00a0they\u2019re called \u2018a noble disciple of great wisdom, of widespread wisdom, who sees what matters, and is accomplished in wisdom\u2019.\u00a0This is called accomplishment in wisdom.\u00a0These are the four things that lead to the getting of the four things that are likable, desirable, and agreeable, but hard to get in the world.<\/p>\n

There are four deeds of substance that a noble disciple does with the legitimate wealth he has earned by his efforts and initiative, built up with his own hands, gathered by the sweat of the brow.\u00a0What four?<\/p>\n

To start with, with his legitimate wealth he makes himself happy and pleased, keeping himself properly happy.\u00a0He makes his mother and father happy \u2026\u00a0He makes his children, partners, bondservants, workers, and staff happy \u2026\u00a0He makes his friends and colleagues happy \u2026\u00a0This is his first solid and substantive investment, used in the appropriate sphere.<\/p>\n

Furthermore, with his legitimate wealth he defends himself against threats from such things as fire, flood, rulers, bandits, or unloved heirs.\u00a0He keeps himself safe.\u00a0This is his second solid and substantive investment, used in the appropriate sphere.<\/p>\n

Furthermore, with his legitimate wealth he makes five spirit-offerings:\u00a0to relatives, guests, ancestors, king, and deities.\u00a0This is his third solid and substantive investment, used in the appropriate sphere.<\/p>\n

Furthermore, with his legitimate wealth he establishes an uplifting religious donation for ascetics and brahmins\u2014those who avoid intoxication and negligence, are settled in patience and gentleness, and who tame, calm, and extinguish themselves\u2014that\u2019s conducive to heaven, ripens in happiness, and leads to heaven.\u00a0This is his fourth solid and substantive investment, used in the appropriate sphere.<\/p>\n

\u201cThese are the four things that are wished for, desired, agreeable, and rarely gained in the world.<\/p>\n

\u201cThere are, householder, four\u00a0other\u00a0things that lead to obtaining those four things. What four? Accomplishment in faith, accomplishment in virtuous behavior, accomplishment in generosity, and accomplishment in wisdom.<\/p>\n

(1) \u201cAnd what, householder, is accomplishment in faith? Here, a noble disciple is endowed with faith; he places faith in the enlightenment of the Tath\u0101gata thus: \u2018The Blessed One is an arahant, perfectly enlightened, accomplished in true knowledge and conduct, fortunate, knower of the world, unsurpassed trainer of persons to be tamed, teacher of devas and humans, the Enlightened One, the Blessed One.\u2019 This is called accomplishment in faith.<\/p>\n

(2) \u201cAnd what is accomplishment in virtuous behavior? Here, a noble disciple abstains from the destruction of life \u2026 abstains from liquor, wine, and intoxicants, the basis for heedlessness. This is called accomplishment in virtuous behavior.<\/p>\n

(3) \u201cAnd what is accomplishment in generosity? Here, a noble disciple dwells at home with a mind free from the stain of miserliness, freely generous, openhanded, delighting in relinquishment, devoted to charity, delighting in giving and sharing. This is called accomplishment in generosity.<\/p>\n

(4) \u201cAnd what is accomplishment in wisdom?\u00a0If one dwells with a heart overcome by longing and unrighteous greed, one does what should be avoided and neglects one\u2019s duty, so that one\u2019s fame and happiness are spoiled. If one dwells with a heart overcome by ill will \u2026 by dullness and drowsiness \u2026 by restlessness and remorse \u2026 by doubt, one does what should be avoided and neglects one\u2019s duty, so that one\u2019s fame and happiness are spoiled.<\/p>\n

\u201cWhen, householder, a noble disciple has understood thus: \u2018Longing and unrighteous greed are a defilement of the mind,\u2019 he abandons them. When he has understood thus: \u2018Ill will is a defilement of the mind,\u2019 he abandons it. When he has understood thus: \u2018Dullness and drowsiness are a defilement of the mind,\u2019 he abandons them. When he has understood thus: \u2018Restlessness and remorse are a defilement of the mind,\u2019 he abandons them. When he has understood thus: \u2018Doubt is a defilement of the mind,\u2019 he abandons it.<\/p>\n

\u201cWhen, householder, a noble disciple has understood thus: \u2018Longing and unrighteous greed are a defilement of the mind\u2019 and has abandoned them; when he has understood thus: \u2018Ill will \u2026 Dullness and drowsiness \u2026 Restlessness and remorse \u2026 Doubt is a defilement of the mind,\u2019 and has abandoned it, he is then called a noble disciple of great wisdom, of wide wisdom, one who sees the range, one accomplished in wisdom. \u201cWith wealth acquired by energetic striving, amassed by the strength of his arms, earned by the sweat of his brow, righteous wealth righteously gained, the noble disciple undertakes four worthy deeds. What four?<\/p>\n

(1) \u201cHere, householder, with wealth acquired by energetic striving \u2026 righteously gained, the noble disciple makes himself happy and pleased and properly maintains himself in happiness; he makes his parents happy and pleased and properly maintains them in happiness; he makes his wife and children, his slaves, workers, and servants happy and pleased and properly maintains them in happiness; he makes his friends and companions happy and pleased and properly maintains them in happiness. This is the first case of wealth that has gone to good use, that has been properly utilized and used for a worthy cause.<\/p>\n

(2) \u201cAgain, with wealth acquired by energetic striving \u2026 righteously gained, the noble disciple makes provisions against the losses that might arise from fire, floods, kings, thieves, or displeasing heirs; he makes himself secure against them. This is the second case of wealth that has gone to good use \u2026 for a worthy cause.<\/p>\n

(3) \u201cAgain, with wealth acquired by energetic striving \u2026 righteously gained, the noble disciple makes the five oblations: to relatives, guests, ancestors, the king, and the deities. This is the third case of wealth that has gone to good use \u2026 for a worthy cause.<\/p>\n

This is the fourth case of wealth that has gone to good use, that has been properly employed and used for a worthy cause.<\/p>\n
