So the Blessed One said to Ven. S\u0101riputta: \u201cS\u0101riputta, when you know of a householder clothed in white, that he is restrained in terms of the five training rules and that he obtains at will, without difficulty, without hardship, four pleasant mental abidings in the here & now, then if he wants he may state about himself: \u2018Hell is ended for me; animal wombs are ended; the state of the hungry ghosts is ended; planes of deprivation, the bad destinations, the lower realms are ended! I am a stream-winner, never again destined for the lower realms, certain, headed for self-awakening!\u2019<\/p>\n

\u201cNow, in terms of which five training rules is he restrained?<\/p>\n

\u201cThere is the case where a disciple of the noble ones abstains from taking life, abstains from taking what is not given, abstains from sexual misconduct, abstains from lying, abstains from distilled & fermented drinks that cause heedlessness.<\/p>\n

\u201cThese are the five training rules in terms of which he is restrained.<\/p>\n

\u201cAnd which four pleasant mental abidings in the here & now does he obtain at will, without difficulty, without hardship?<\/p>\n

\u201cThere is the case where the disciple of the noble ones is endowed with verified confidence in the Awakened One: \u2018Indeed, the Blessed One is worthy & rightly self-awakened, consummate in clear-knowing & conduct, well-gone, an expert with regard to the cosmos, unexcelled trainer of people fit to be tamed, teacher of devas & human beings, awakened, blessed.\u2019 This is the first pleasant mental abiding in the here & now that he has attained, for the purification of the mind that is impure, for the cleansing of the mind that is unclean.<\/p>\n

\u201cAnd further, he is endowed with verified confidence in the Dhamma: \u2018The Dhamma is well taught by the Blessed One, to be seen here & now, timeless, inviting verification, pertinent, to be experienced by the observant for themselves.\u2019 This is the second pleasant mental abiding in the here & now that he has attained, for the purification of the mind that is impure, for the cleansing of the mind that is unclean.<\/p>\n

\u201cAnd further, he is endowed with verified confidence in the Sa\u1e45gha: \u2018The Sa\u1e45gha of the Blessed One\u2019s disciples who have practiced well\u2026who have practiced straight-forwardly\u2026who have practiced methodically\u2026who have practiced masterfully\u2014in other words, the four pairs, the eight individuals1<\/a><\/span>\u2014they are the Sa\u1e45gha of the Blessed One\u2019s disciples: deserving of gifts, deserving of hospitality, deserving of offerings, deserving of respect, the incomparable field of merit for the world.\u2019 This is the third pleasant mental abiding in the here & now that he has attained, for the purification of the mind that is impure, for the cleansing of the mind that is unclean.<\/p>\n

\u201cAnd further, he is endowed with virtues that are appealing to the noble ones: untorn, unbroken, unspotted, unsplattered, liberating, praised by the observant, ungrasped at, leading to concentration. This is the fourth pleasant mental abiding in the here & now that he has attained, for the purification of the mind that is impure, for the cleansing of the mind that is unclean.<\/p>\n

\u201cThese are the four pleasant mental abidings in the here & now that he obtains at will, without difficulty, without hardship.<\/p>\n

shouldn\u2019t grasp what isn\u2019t given.<\/p>\n

Content with your own wife,<\/p>\n

don\u2019t delight in the wives of others.<\/p>\n

You shouldn\u2019t drink drinks,<\/p>\n

distilled, fermented,<\/p>\n

that confuse the mind.<\/p>\n

Recollect<\/p>\n

the self-awakened one.<\/p>\n

Think often<\/p>\n

of the Dhamma.<\/p>\n

Develop a mind<\/p>\n

useful, devoid of ill will,<\/p>\n

for the sake of the heavenly world.<\/p>\n

When hoping for merit,<\/p>\n

provide gifts first<\/p>\n

to those peaceful ones, ideal,<\/p>\n

to whom what is offered, given,<\/p>\n

becomes abundant (in fruit).<\/p>\n

\n

I will tell you of those peaceful ones,<\/p>\n

S\u0101riputta.<\/p>\n

Listen to me.<\/p>\n

In a herd of cattle,<\/p>\n

whether black, white,<\/p>\n

ruddy, brown,<\/p>\n

dappled, uniform,<\/p>\n

or pigeon gray:<\/p>\n

If a bull is born\u2014<\/p>\n

tame, enduring,<\/p>\n

consummate in strength,<\/p>\n

& swift\u2014<\/p>\n

people yoke him to burdens,<\/p>\n

regardless of his color.<\/p>\n

In the same way,<\/p>\n

wherever one is born<\/p>\n

among human beings\u2014<\/p>\n

noble warriors, brahmans,<\/p>\n

merchants, workers,<\/p>\n

outcastes, or scavengers\u2014<\/p>\n

if one is tame, with good practices,<\/p>\n

righteous, consummate in virtue,<\/p>\n

a speaker of truth,<\/p>\n

with a sense of shame at heart,<\/p>\n

one<\/p>\n

who\u2019s abandoned\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0birth & death,<\/p>\n

completed\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0the holy life<\/p>\n

put down\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0the burden,<\/p>\n

done\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0the task<\/p>\n

effluent-free,<\/p>\n

gone beyond all dhammas,<\/p>\n

through lack of clinging\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0unbound:<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

Offerings to this spotless field<\/p>\n

bear an abundance of fruit.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\n

But fools, unknowing,<\/p>\n

dull, uninformed,<\/p>\n

give gifts outside<\/p>\n

and don\u2019t come near the good.<\/p>\n

While those who do\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0come near the good<\/p>\n

\u2014regarded as enlightened,<\/p>\n

discerning\u2014<\/p>\n

whose conviction in the One Well-Gone<\/p>\n

has taken root,<\/p>\n

is established:<\/p>\n

They go to the world of the devas<\/p>\n

or are reborn here in good family.<\/p>\n

Step by step<\/p>\n

they reach<\/p>\n

unbinding<\/p>\n

: they<\/p>\n

who are wise.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n
