\u201cOn the eighth day of the fortnight, mendicants, the ministers and counselors of the Four Great Kings wander about the world, thinking:\u00a0\u2018Hopefully most humans are paying due respect to their parents, ascetics and brahmins, honoring the elders in their families, observing the sabbath, staying awake, and making merit.\u2019<\/p>\n

And on the fourteenth day of the fortnight, the sons of the Four Great Kings wander about the world, thinking:\u00a0\u2018Hopefully most humans are paying due respect to their parents \u2026 and making merit.\u2019<\/p>\n

And on the fifteenth day sabbath, the Four Great Kings themselves wander about the world, thinking:\u00a0\u2018Hopefully most humans are paying due respect to their parents \u2026 and making merit.\u2019<\/p>\n

If only a few humans are paying due respect to their parents \u2026 and making merit,\u00a0then the Four Great Kings address the gods of the Thirty-Three, seated together in the Hall of Justice:\u00a0\u2018Only a few humans are paying due respect to their parents \u2026 and making merit.\u2019\u00a0Then the gods of the Thirty-Three are disappointed, thinking,\u00a0\u2018The heavenly hosts will dwindle, while the demon hosts will swell!\u2019<\/p>\n

But if many humans are paying due respect to their parents \u2026 and making merit,\u00a0then the Four Great Kings address the gods of the Thirty-Three, seated together in the Hall of Justice:\u00a0\u2018Many humans are paying due respect to their parents \u2026 and making merit.\u2019\u00a0Then the gods of the Thirty-Three are pleased, thinking,\u00a0\u2018The heavenly hosts will swell, while the demon hosts will dwindle!\u2019<\/p>\n

Once upon a time, Sakka, lord of gods, guiding the gods of the Thirty-Three, recited this verse:<\/p>\n

\u2018Whoever wants to be like me
\nwould observe the sabbath
\ncomplete in all eight factors,
\non the fourteenth and the fifteenth days,
\nand the eighth day of the fortnight,
\nas well as on the fortnightly special displays.\u2019<\/p>\n

But that verse was poorly sung by Sakka, lord of gods, not well sung; poorly spoken, not well spoken.\u00a0Why is that?\u00a0Sakka, lord of gods, is not free of greed, hate, and delusion.<\/p>\n

But for a mendicant who is perfected\u2014with defilements ended, who has completed the spiritual journey, done what had to be done, laid down the burden, achieved their own true goal, utterly ended the fetters of rebirth, and is rightly freed through enlightenment\u2014it is appropriate to say:<\/p>\n

\u2018Whoever wants to be like me
\nwould observe the sabbath,
\ncomplete in all eight factors,
\non the fourteenth and the fifteenth days,
\nand the eighth day of the fortnight,
\nas well as on the fortnightly special displays.\u2019<\/p>\n

Why is that?\u00a0Because that mendicant is free of greed, hate, and delusion.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cIf, bhikkhus, there are few people who behave properly toward their mother and father \u2026 and do meritorious deeds, the four great kings report this to the T\u0101vati\u1e41sa devas when they meet and are sitting together in the Sudhamma council hall: \u2018Revered sirs, there are few people who behave properly toward their mother and father \u2026 and do meritorious deeds.\u2019 Then, because of this, the T\u0101vati\u1e41sa devas become displeased,\u00a0saying: \u2018Alas, the celestial company will decline and the company of asuras will flourish!\u2019<\/p>\n

\u201cThis verse, bhikkhus, was badly recited by Sakka, ruler of the devas, not well recited. It was badly stated, not well stated. For what reason? Because Sakka, ruler of the devas, is not devoid of lust, hatred, and delusion. But in the case of a bhikkhu who is an arahant\u2014one whose taints are destroyed, who has lived the spiritual life, done what had to be done, laid down the burden, reached his own goal, utterly destroyed the fetters of existence, one completely liberated through final knowledge\u2014it is fitting for him to say:<\/p>\n

\u201c\u2018The person who would be like me \u2026
\nand during special fortnights.\u2019<\/p>\n

\u201cFor what reason? Because that bhikkhu is devoid of lust, hatred, and delusion.\u201d<\/p>\n
