Furthermore, with the fading away of rapture, they enter and remain in the third absorption, where they meditate with equanimity, mindful and aware, personally experiencing the bliss of which the noble ones declare, \u2018Equanimous and mindful, one meditates in bliss.\u2019\u00a0They enjoy it and like it and find it satisfying.\u00a0If they abide in that, are committed to it, and meditate on it often without losing it, when they die they\u2019re reborn in the company of the gods replete with glory.\u00a0The lifespan of the gods replete with glory is four eons.\u00a0An ordinary person stays there until the lifespan of those gods is spent, then they go to hell or the animal realm or the ghost realm.\u00a0But a disciple of the Buddha stays there until the lifespan of those gods is spent, then they\u2019re extinguished in that very life.\u00a0This is the difference between a learned noble disciple and an unlearned ordinary person, that is, when there is a place of rebirth.<\/p>\n

Furthermore, giving up pleasure and pain, and ending former happiness and sadness, they enter and remain in the fourth absorption, without pleasure or pain, with pure equanimity and mindfulness.\u00a0They enjoy it and like it and find it satisfying.\u00a0If they abide in that, are committed to it, and meditate on it often without losing it, when they die they\u2019re reborn in the company of the gods of abundant fruit.\u00a0The lifespan of the gods of abundant fruit is five hundred eons.\u00a0An ordinary person stays there until the lifespan of those gods is spent, then they go to hell or the animal realm or the ghost realm.\u00a0But a disciple of the Buddha stays there until the lifespan of those gods is spent, then they\u2019re extinguished in that very life.\u00a0This is the difference between a learned noble disciple and an unlearned ordinary person, that is, when there is a place of rebirth.<\/p>\n

\u201cThere is the case where an individual, quite secluded from sensuality, secluded from unskillful qualities, enters & remains in the first jh\u0101na: rapture & pleasure born of seclusion, accompanied by directed thought & evaluation. He savors that, longs for that, finds satisfaction through that. Staying there\u2014fixed on that, dwelling there often, not falling away from that\u2014then when he dies he reappears in conjunction with the Devas of Brahm\u0101\u2019s Retinue. The Devas of Brahm\u0101\u2019s Retinue, monks, have a lifespan of an eon. A run-of-the-mill person having stayed there, having used up all the lifespan of those devas, goes to hell, to the animal womb, to the state of the hungry ghosts. But a disciple of the Blessed One, having stayed there, having used up all the lifespan of those devas, is unbound right in that state of being. This, monks, is the difference, this the distinction, this the distinguishing factor, between an educated disciple of the noble ones and an uneducated run-of-the-mill person, when there is a destination, a reappearing.<\/p>\n

\u201cAgain, there is the case where an individual, with the stilling of directed thoughts & evaluations, enters & remains in the second jh\u0101na: rapture & pleasure born of concentration, unification of awareness free from directed thought & evaluation\u2014internal assurance. He savors that, longs for that, finds satisfaction through that. Staying there\u2014fixed on that, dwelling there often, not falling away from that\u2014then when he dies he reappears in conjunction with the \u0100bhassara [Radiant] devas.1<\/a><\/span>\u00a0The \u0100bhassara devas, monks, have a lifespan of two eons. A run-of-the-mill person having stayed there, having used up all the lifespan of those devas, goes to hell, to the animal womb, to the state of the hungry ghosts. But a disciple of the Blessed One, having stayed there, having used up all the lifespan of those devas, is unbound right in that state of being. This, monks, is the difference, this the distinction, this the distinguishing factor, between an educated disciple of the noble ones and an uneducated run-of-the-mill person, when there is a destination, a reappearing.<\/p>\n

A run-of-the-mill person having stayed there, having used up all the lifespan of those devas, goes to hell, to the animal womb, to the state of the hungry ghosts. But a disciple of the Blessed One, having stayed there, having used up all the lifespan of those devas, is unbound right in that state of being. This, monks, is the difference, this the distinction, this the distinguishing factor, between an educated disciple of the noble ones and an uneducated run-of-the-mill person, when there is a destination, a reappearing.<\/p>\n

\u201cAgain, there is the case where an individual, with the abandoning of pleasure & pain\u2014as with the earlier disappearance of elation & distress\u2014enters & remains in the fourth jh\u0101na: purity of equanimity & mindfulness, neither pleasure nor pain. He savors that, longs for that, finds satisfaction through that. Staying there\u2014fixed on that, dwelling there often, not falling away from that\u2014then when he dies he reappears in conjunction with the Vehapphala [Sky-fruit] devas. The Vehapphala devas, monks, have a lifespan of 500 eons. A run-of-the-mill person having stayed there, having used up all the lifespan of those devas, goes to hell, to the animal womb, to the state of the hungry ghosts. But a disciple of the Blessed One, having stayed there, having used up all the lifespan of those devas, is unbound right in that state of being. This, monks, is the difference, this the distinction, this the distinguishing factor, between an educated disciple of the noble ones and an uneducated run-of-the-mill person, when there is a destination, a reappearing.<\/p>\n
