themselves nor others; and<\/p>\n<p>one who practices to benefit both themselves and others.<\/p>\n<p>Suppose there was a firebrand for lighting a funeral pyre, burning at both ends, and smeared with dung in the middle. It couldn\u2019t be used as timber either in the village or the wilderness.\u00a0The person who practices to benefit neither themselves nor others is like this, I say.<\/p>\n<p>The person who practices to benefit others, but not themselves, is better than that.\u00a0The person who practices to benefit themselves, but not others, is better than both of those.\u00a0But the person who practices to benefit both themselves and others is the foremost, best, chief, highest, and finest of the four.<\/p>\n<p>From a cow comes milk, from milk comes curds, from curds come butter, from butter comes ghee, and from ghee comes cream of ghee. The individual who practices for the benefit of others but not for his\/her own is the higher &amp; more refined of these two. The individual who practices for his\/her own benefit but not for that of others is the highest &amp; most refined of these three. The individual who practices for his\/her own benefit and for that of others is, of these four, the foremost, the chief, the most outstanding, the highest, &amp; supreme.
