The Realized One has truly understood the origin, ending, gratification, drawback, and escape of sights, so he doesn\u2019t like, love, or enjoy them.\u00a0When sights perish, fade away, and cease, the Realized One lives happily.<\/p>\n

The Realized One has truly understood the origin, ending, gratification, drawback, and escape of sounds \u2026\u00a0smells \u2026\u00a0tastes \u2026\u00a0touches \u2026\u00a0thoughts, so he doesn\u2019t like, love, or enjoy them.\u00a0When thoughts perish, fade away, and cease, the Realized One lives happily.\u201d<\/p>\n

That is what the Buddha said.\u00a0Then the Holy One, the Teacher, went on to say:<\/p>\n

\u201cSights, sounds, tastes, smells,
\ntouches and thoughts, the lot of them\u2014
\nthey\u2019re likable, desirable, and pleasurable
\nas long as you can say that they exist.<\/p>\n

For all the world with its gods,
\nthis is what they agree is happiness.
\nAnd where they cease
\nis agreed on as suffering for them.<\/p>\n

The noble ones have seen that happiness
\nis the cessation of identity.
\nThis insight by those who see
\ncontradicts the whole world.<\/p>\n

What others say is happiness
\nthe noble ones say is suffering.
\nWhat others say is suffering
\nthe noble ones know as happiness.<\/p>\n

See, this teaching is hard to understand,
\nit confuses the ignorant.
\nThere is darkness for the shrouded;
\nblackness for those who don\u2019t see.<\/p>\n

But the good are open;
\nlike light for those who see.
\nThough close, they do not understand,
\nthose fools inexpert in the teaching.<\/p>\n

They\u2019re mired in desire to be reborn,
\nflowing along the stream of lives,
\nmired in M\u0101ra\u2019s sway:
\nthis teaching isn\u2019t easy for them to understand.<\/p>\n

Who, apart from the noble ones,
\nis qualified to understand this state?
\nWhen they\u2019ve rightly understood it,
\nthey\u2019re extinguished without defilements.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cForms, sounds, odours, tastes,
\nTactiles and all objects of mind\u2014
\nDesirable, lovely, agreeable,
\nSo long as it\u2019s said: \u2018They are.\u2019<\/p>\n

\u201cThese are considered happiness
\nBy the world with its devas;
\nBut where these cease,
\nThat they consider suffering.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe noble ones have seen as happiness
\nThe ceasing of identity.
\nThis\u00a0view\u00a0of those who clearly see
\nRuns counter to the entire world.<\/p>\n

\u201cWhat others speak of as happiness,
\nThat the noble ones say is suffering;
\nWhat others speak of as suffering,

\u201cBehold this Dhamma hard to comprehend:
\nHere the foolish are bewildered.
\nFor those with blocked minds it is obscure,
\nSheer darkness for those who do not see.<\/p>\n

\u201cBut for the good it is disclosed,
\nIt is light here for those who see.
\nThe dullards unskilled in the Dhamma
\nDon\u2019t understand it in its presence.<\/p>\n

\u201cThis Dhamma isn\u2019t easily understood
\nBy those afflicted with lust for existence,
\nWho flow along in the stream of existence,
\nDeeply mired in Mara\u2019s realm.<\/p>\n

\u201cWho else apart from the noble ones
\nAre able to understand this state?
\nWhen they have rightly known that state,
