Then lie down in the lion\u2019s posture\u2014on the right side, placing one foot on top of the other\u2014mindful and aware, and focused on the time of getting up.\u00a0When you wake, you should get up quickly, thinking:\u00a0\u2018I will not live indulging in the pleasures of sleeping, lying down, and drowsing.\u2019\u00a0That\u2019s how you should train.<\/p>\n<p>So you should train like this:\u00a0\u2018I will not approach families with my head swollen with vanity.\u2019\u00a0That\u2019s how you should train.\u00a0What happens if a mendicant approaches families with a head swollen with vanity? Well, families have business to attend to,\u00a0so people might not notice when a mendicant arrives. In that case the mendicant thinks:\u00a0\u2018Who on earth has turned this family against me? It seems they don\u2019t like me any more.\u2019\u00a0And so, because they don\u2019t get anything they feel dismayed. Being dismayed, they become restless. Being restless, they lose restraint. And without restraint the mind is far from immersion.<\/p>\n<p>So you should train like this:\u00a0\u2018I won\u2019t get into arguments.\u2019\u00a0That\u2019s how you should train.\u00a0When there\u2019s an argument, you can expect there\u2019ll be lots of talking. When there\u2019s lots of talking, people become restless. Being restless, they lose restraint. And without restraint the mind is far from immersion.\u00a0Moggall\u0101na, I don\u2019t praise all kinds of closeness.\u00a0Nor do I criticize all kinds of closeness.\u00a0I don\u2019t praise closeness with laypeople and renunciates.\u00a0I do praise closeness with those lodgings that are quiet and still, far from the madding crowd, remote from human settlements, and fit for retreat.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>When he said this, Venerable Moggall\u0101na asked the Buddha,\u00a0\u201cSir, how do you briefly define a mendicant who is freed through the ending of craving, who has reached the ultimate end, the ultimate sanctuary, the ultimate spiritual life, the ultimate goal, and is best among gods and humans?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s when a mendicant has heard:\u00a0\u2018Nothing is worth insisting on.\u2019\u00a0When a mendicant has heard that\u00a0nothing is worth insisting on,\u00a0they directly know all things. Directly knowing all things, they completely understand all things. Having completely understood all things, when they experience any kind of feeling\u2014pleasant, unpleasant, or neutral\u2014they meditate observing impermanence, dispassion, cessation, and letting go in those feelings.\u00a0Meditating in this way, they don\u2019t grasp at anything in the world.\u00a0Not grasping, they\u2019re not anxious. It\u2019s possible that by doing this you will shake off your drowsiness.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBut if by doing this you don\u2019t shake off your drowsiness, then\u2014reclining on your right side\u2014take up the lion\u2019s posture, one foot placed on top of the other, mindful, alert, with your mind set on getting up. As soon as you wake up, get up quickly, with the thought, \u2018I won\u2019t stay indulging in the pleasure of lying down, the pleasure of reclining, the pleasure of drowsiness.\u2019 That is how you should train yourself.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAnd further, Moggall\u0101na, should you train yourself: \u2018I will not visit families with my pride [literally: my trunk (i.e., an elephant\u2019s trunk)] lifted high.\u2019 That is how you should train yourself. Among families there are many jobs that have to be done, so that people don\u2019t pay attention to a visiting monk. If a monk visits them with his trunk lifted high, the thought will occur to him, \u2018Now who, I wonder, has caused a split between me and this family? The people seem to have no liking for me.\u2019 Getting nothing, he becomes abashed. Abashed, he becomes restless. Restless, he becomes unrestrained. Unrestrained, his mind is far from concentration.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAnd further, Moggall\u0101na, should you train yourself: \u2018I will speak no confrontational speech.\u2019 That is how you should train yourself. When there is confrontational speech, a lot of discussion can be expected. When there is a lot of discussion, there is restlessness. One who is restless becomes unrestrained. Unrestrained, his mind is far from concentration.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s not the case, Moggall\u0101na, that I praise association of every sort. But it\u2019s not the case that I dispraise association of every sort. I don\u2019t praise association with householders and renunciates. But as for dwelling places that are free from noise, free from sound, their atmosphere devoid of people, appropriately secluded for resting undisturbed by human beings: I praise association with dwelling places of this sort.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>When this was said, Ven. Moggall\u0101na said to the Blessed One: \u201cBriefly, lord, in what respect is a monk released through the ending of craving, utterly complete, utterly free from bonds, a follower of the utterly holy life, utterly consummate: foremost among devas &amp; human beings?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThere is the case, Moggall\u0101na, where a monk has heard,\u00a0<em>\u2018All dhammas are unworthy of attachment.\u2019<\/em>\u00a0Having heard that all dhammas are unworthy of attachment, he directly knows every dhamma. Directly knowing every dhamma, he comprehends every dhamma. Comprehending every dhamma, then whatever feeling he experiences\u2014pleasure, pain, neither pleasure nor pain\u2014he remains focused on inconstancy, focused on dispassion, focused on cessation, focused on relinquishing with regard to that feeling. As he remains focused on inconstancy, focused on dispassion, focused on cessation, focused on relinquishing with regard to that feeling, he is unsustained by [doesn\u2019t cling to] anything in the world. Unsustained, he isn\u2019t agitated. Unagitated, he totally unbinds right within. He discerns: \u2018Birth is ended, the holy life fulfilled, the task done.
