They slackly develop mindfulness of death for the ending of defilements.<\/p>\n<p>But as to the mendicants who develop mindfulness of death by wishing\u00a0to live as long as it takes to chew and swallow a single mouthful \u2026\u00a0or to live as long as it takes to breathe out after breathing in, or to breathe in after breathing out\u2014these are called mendicants who live diligently. They keenly develop mindfulness of death for the ending of defilements.<\/p>\n<p>So you should train like this:\u00a0\u2018We will live diligently. They develop mindfulness of death slowly for the sake of ending the effluents.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBut whoever develops mindfulness of death, thinking, \u2018O, that I might live for the interval that it takes to swallow having chewed up one morsel of food\u2026 for the interval that it takes to breathe out after breathing in, or to breathe in after breathing out, that I might attend to the Blessed One\u2019s instructions. I would have accomplished a great deal\u2019\u2014they are said to dwell heedfully. They develop mindfulness of death acutely for the sake of ending the effluents.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cTherefore you should train yourselves: \u2018We will dwell heedfully. We will develop mindfulness of death acutely for the sake of ending the effluents.\u2019 That is how you should train yourselves.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>That is what the Blessed One said.
