49. Animals<\/p>\n

At one time there was a dragon who was troubled, ashamed, and disgusted with his existence as a dragon.\u00a0He thought,\u00a0\u201cHow can I get released from this existence and quickly become human?\u201d\u00a0It occurred to him,\u00a0\u201cThese Sakyan monastics have integrity. They\u2019re celibate and their conduct is good, and they\u2019re truthful, moral, and have a good character.\u00a0If I were to go forth with them, I would be released from this existence as a dragon and quickly become human.\u201d<\/p>\n

Then, taking on the appearance of a young brahmin, that dragon went to the monks and asked for the going forth.\u00a0The monks gave him the going forth and the full ordination.<\/p>\n

Soon afterwards that dragon was sharing a remote dwelling with a certain monk.\u00a0After getting up early one morning, that monk did walking meditation outside.\u00a0When the monk had left, the dragon relaxed and fell asleep.\u00a0As a result, the serpent filled the whole dwelling, its coils even protruding from the windows.\u00a0Just then that monk decided to go back inside. When he opened the door, he saw the serpent filling the whole dwelling. Terrified, he screamed.\u00a0Monks came running to and asked him why he was screaming.\u00a0And he told them what had seen.<\/p>\n

The dragon woke up from the noise and sat down on his seat.\u00a0The monks asked him\u00a0who he was.\u00a0He replied, \u201cI\u2019m a dragon.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cWhy did you do this?\u201d\u00a0And the dragon told them what had happened.<\/p>\n

They told the Buddha.<\/p>\n

He then had the Sangha of monks gathered and said to the dragon,\u00a0\u201cDragons are unable to make progress on this spiritual path.\u00a0Go, dragon, and keep the observance days of the fourteenth, the fifteenth, and the eighth of the lunar half-month. In this way you\u2019ll be released from existence as a dragon and quickly become human.\u201d<\/p>\n

When he heard this, the dragon wept. Sad and miserable he cried out in distress and left.\u00a0And the Buddha addressed the monks:<\/p>\n

\u201cThere are two occasions when dragons appear in their own form:\u00a0when they have sexual intercourse with each other, and when they relax and fall asleep.<\/p>\n

Monks, an animal shouldn\u2019t be given the full ordination. If it has been given, it should be expelled.\u201d<\/p>\n

Then it occurred to that serpent: \u201cNow, by what means could I be freed quickly from birth as a serpent and get back human status?\u201d Then it occurred to that serpent: \u201cThese recluses, sons of the Sakyans, are\u00a0dhamma-farers, even-farers, Brahma-farers, they are truth-speakers, they are of moral habit, of good conduct. Now if I were to go forth among the recluses, sons of the Sakyans, so would I be freed quickly from birth as a serpent and could get back human status.\u201d<\/p>\n

Then that serpent, in the form of a brahmin youth, having approached the monks, asked for the going forth. The monks let him go forth, they ordained him. Now at that time that serpent, together with a certain monk, was living in a dwelling-place on the boundary. Then that monk, getting up in the night towards dawn, paced up and down in the open air.\u00a0Then that serpent, confident that that monk had gone out, fell asleep. The whole dwelling-place was full of the snake, his coils were protruding through the windows.<\/p>\n

Then that monk, thinking: \u201cI will enter the dwelling-place,\u201d opening the door, saw the whole dwelling-place full of the snake, his coils protruding through the windows. Terrified at seeing this, he uttered a cry of distress. Monks, having run up, spoke thus to that monk: \u201cWhy did you, your reverence, utter a cry of distress?\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cYour reverences, this whole dwelling-place is full of a snake, his coils are protruding through the windows.\u201d Then that serpent having awakened because of this noise, sat down on his own seat. Monks spoke thus: \u201cWho are you, friend?\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cI am a serpent, honoured sirs.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cBut why did you, friend, act in this way?\u201d Then that serpent told this matter to the monks. The monks told this matter to the Lord.<\/p>\n

Then the Lord on this occasion, in this connection, having had the Order of monks convened, spoke thus to this serpent: \u201cIndeed, you serpents are not liable to growth in this\u00a0dhamma\u00a0and discipline. You, serpent, go away, observe the Observance day precisely on the fourteenth, fifteenth and eighth day of the half-month. Thus will you be freed quickly from birth as a serpent and get back human status.\u201d<\/p>\n

Then that serpent, thinking: \u201cIt is said that I am not liable to growth in this\u00a0dhamma\u00a0and discipline,\u201d pained, afflicted, shedding tears, departed having uttered a cry of distress.<\/p>\n

Then the Lord addressed the monks, saying: \u201cMonks, there are these two cases of manifestation of a serpent\u2019s true nature: when he indulges in sexual intercourse with a female of his own species, and when he falls asleep in confidence. Monks, these are two cases\u00a0of manifestation of a serpent\u2019s true nature.\u00a0Monks, if an animal is not ordained, it should not be ordained; if it is ordained, it should be expelled.\u201d<\/p>\n
