In the same way, a mendicant who is committed to the higher mind has coarse corruptions: bad bodily, verbal, and mental conduct. A sincere, capable mendicant gives these up, gets rid of, eliminates, and obliterates them.<\/p>\n

When they\u2019ve been given up and eliminated, there are middling corruptions: sensual, malicious, or cruel thoughts. A sincere, capable mendicant gives these up, gets rid of, eliminates, and obliterates them.<\/p>\n

When they\u2019ve been given up and eliminated, there are fine corruptions: thoughts of family, country, and being looked up to. A sincere, capable mendicant gives these up, gets rid of, eliminates, and obliterates them.<\/p>\n

When they\u2019ve been given up and eliminated, only thoughts about the teaching are left.\u00a0That immersion is not peaceful or sublime or tranquil or unified, but is held in place by forceful suppression.<\/p>\n

But there comes a time when that mind is stilled internally; it settles, unifies, and becomes immersed in sam\u0101dhi.\u00a0That immersion is peaceful and sublime and tranquil and unified, not held in place by forceful suppression.\u00a0They become capable of realizing anything that can be realized by insight to which they extend the mind, in each and every case.<\/p>\n

If they wish: \u2018May I wield the many kinds of psychic power: multiplying myself and becoming one again; appearing and disappearing; going unimpeded through a wall, a rampart, or a mountain as if through space; diving in and out of the earth as if it were water; walking on water as if it were earth; flying cross-legged through the sky like a bird; touching and stroking with my hand the sun and moon, so mighty and powerful; controlling my body as far as the Brahm\u0101 realm.\u2019\u00a0They are capable of realizing it, in each and every case.<\/p>\n

\u201cIn the same way, there are these gross impurities in a monk intent on heightened mind: misconduct in body, speech, & mind. These the monk\u2014aware & able by nature\u2014abandons, destroys, dispels, wipes out of existence. When he is rid of them, there remain in him the moderate impurities: thoughts of sensuality, ill will, & harmfulness. These he abandons, destroys, dispels, wipes out of existence. But these beings\u2014who were endowed with good conduct of body, speech, and mind, who did not revile the noble ones, who held right views and undertook actions under the influence of right views\u2014with the break-up of the body, after death, have re-appeared in a good destination, a heavenly world.\u2019 Thus\u2014by means of the divine eye, purified and surpassing the human\u2014he sees beings passing away and re-appearing, and he discerns how they are inferior and superior, beautiful and ugly, fortunate and unfortunate in accordance with their kamma.
