\u2026 Then it occurred to me,\u00a0\u2018This principle I have discovered is deep, hard to see, hard to understand, peaceful, sublime, beyond the scope of logic, subtle, comprehensible to the astute.\u00a0But people like clinging, they love it and enjoy it.\u00a0It\u2019s hard for them to see this thing; that is, specific conditionality, dependent origination.\u00a0It\u2019s also hard for them to see this thing; that is, the stilling of all activities, the letting go of all attachments, the ending of craving, fading away, cessation, extinguishment.\u00a0And if I were to teach the Dhamma, others might not understand me, which would be wearying and troublesome for me.\u2019\u00a0And then these verses, which were neither supernaturally inspired, nor learned before in the past, occurred to me:<\/p>\n

And as I reflected like this, my mind inclined to remaining passive, not to teaching the Dhamma.<\/p>\n

Then Brahm\u0101 Sahampati, knowing what I was thinking, thought,\u00a0\u2018Alas! The world will be lost, the world will perish! For the mind of the Realized One, the perfected one, the fully awakened Buddha, inclines to remaining passive, not to teaching the Dhamma.\u2019<\/p>\n

Then Brahm\u0101 Sahampati, as easily as a strong person would extend or contract their arm, vanished from the Brahm\u0101 realm and reappeared in front of me.\u00a0He arranged his robe over one shoulder, raised his joined palms toward me, and said,\u00a0\u2018Sir, let the Blessed One teach the Dhamma! Let the Holy One teach the Dhamma!\u00a0There are beings with little dust in their eyes. They\u2019re in decline because they haven\u2019t heard the teaching.\u00a0There will be those who understand the teaching!\u2019<\/p>\n

Then, understanding Brahm\u0101\u2019s invitation, I surveyed the world with the eye of a Buddha, because of my compassion for sentient beings.\u00a0And I saw sentient beings with little dust in their eyes, and some with much dust in their eyes; with keen faculties and with weak faculties, with good qualities and with bad qualities, easy to teach and hard to teach. And some of them lived seeing the danger in the fault to do with the next world, while others did not.\u00a0It\u2019s like a pool with blue water lilies, or pink or white lotuses. Some of them sprout and grow in the water without rising above it, thriving underwater. Some of them sprout and grow in the water reaching the water\u2019s surface. And some of them sprout and grow in the water but rise up above the water and stand with no water clinging to them.\u00a0Then I replied in verse to Brahm\u0101 Sahampati:<\/p>\n

\u2018Flung open are the doors to the deathless!
\nLet those with ears to hear commit to faith.

And knowledge and vision arose in me,\u00a0\u2018\u0100\u1e37\u0101ra K\u0101l\u0101ma passed away seven days ago.\u2019\u00a0Then it occurred to me,\u00a0\u2018This is a great loss for \u0100\u1e37\u0101ra K\u0101l\u0101ma.\u00a0If he had heard the teaching, he would have understood it quickly.\u2019<\/p>\n

Then it occurred to me,\u00a0\u2018Who should I teach first of all?\u00a0Who will quickly understand the teaching?\u2019\u00a0Then it occurred to me,\u00a0\u2018That Uddaka, son of R\u0101ma, is astute, competent, clever, and has long had little dust in his eyes.\u00a0Why don\u2019t I teach him first of all?\u00a0He\u2019ll quickly understand the teaching.\u2019\u00a0But a deity came to me and said,\u00a0\u2018Sir, Uddaka, son of R\u0101ma, passed away just last night.\u2019<\/p>\n

And knowledge and vision arose in me,\u00a0\u2018Uddaka, son of R\u0101ma, passed away just last night.\u2019\u00a0Then it occurred to me,\u00a0\u2018This is a great loss for Uddaka.\u00a0If he had heard the teaching, he would have understood it quickly.\u2019<\/p>\n

Then it occurred to me,\u00a0\u2018Who should I teach first of all?\u00a0Who will quickly understand the teaching?\u2019\u00a0Then it occurred to me,\u00a0\u2018The group of five mendicants were very helpful to me. They looked after me during my time of resolute striving.\u00a0Why don\u2019t I teach them first of all?\u2019\u00a0Then it occurred to me,\u00a0\u2018Where are the group of five mendicants staying these days?\u2019\u00a0With clairvoyance that is purified and superhuman I saw that the group of five mendicants were staying near Varanasi, in the deer park at Isipatana.<\/p>\n

So, when I had stayed in Uruvel\u0101 as long as I pleased, I set out for Varanasi. \u2026<\/p>\n

\u2026 \u201cIt occurred to me, Prince, the Dhamma that I have attained is profound, hard to see and hard to discover. It is\u00a0the most\u00a0peaceful and superior\u00a0goal of all, unattainable by\u00a0mere\u00a0ratiocination, subtle, and for the wise to experience. But this generation loves something to rely on, delights in something to rely on, is glad of something to rely on. It is hard for such a generation to see this truth, namely, specific conditionality, dependent origination. And it is hard to see this truth, namely, the stilling of all formations, relinquishing of all essentials of existence, exhaustion of craving, fading of lust, cessation, Nibb\u0101na. And if I taught the Dhamma, others would not understand me, and that would be weariness and a bother for me.<\/p>\n

\u201cIn fact there came to me spontaneously these stanzas never heard before:<\/p>\n

\u201c\u2018Enough, nor teach the Dhamma
\nThat even I found hard to reach;
\nFor it will never be perceived
\nBy those who live in lust and hate.
\nMen dyed in lust, and whom a cloud
\nOf darkness laps, will never see
\nWhat goes against the stream, is subtle,
\nDeep, and hard to see, abstruse.\u2019<\/p>\n

\u201cConsidering thus, my mind favoured inaction instead of teaching the Dhamma.<\/p>\n

\u201cThen the Brahm\u0101 Divinity Sahampati knew in mind the thought in my mind, and he\u00a0considered:\u00a0\u2018The world will be lost, the world will be utterly lost, since the mind of the Tath\u0101gata, Arahant and Fully Enlightened One, favours inaction instead of teaching the Dhamma.\u2019<\/p>\n

\u201cThen just as soon as a strong man might extend his flexed arm or flex his extended arm, the Divinity Sahampati vanished in the world of the Divinity and appeared before me. Then he arranged his upper robe on one shoulder and raising his hands palms together towards me, he said: \u2018Venerable Sir, let the Blessed One teach the Dhamma. There are beings with little dust in their eyes who are wasting through not hearing the Dhamma. Some of them will gain final knowledge of the Dhamma.\u2019<\/p>\n

\u201cThe Divinity Sahampati spoke thus, and having done so, he said further:<\/p>\n

\u201c\u2018In Magadha till now have Dhammas been
\nUnpurified, thought out by those still stained.
\nOpen the Deathless gateway, let them hear
\nThe Dhamma the Immaculate has found;
\nAnd, just as one sees all the folk around
\nWho stands upon a solid pile of rock,
\nSurvey, O sorrowless, all-seeing sage,
\nThis human breed engulfed in sorrowing
\nThat Birth has at its mercy, and Old Age.
\nArise victorious Hero, Knowledge-bringer,
\nFree from all debt, and wander in the world.
\nProclaim the Dhamma; there are some,
\nO Blessed One, will understand.\u2019<\/p>\n

\u201cThen I listened to the Divinity\u2019s pleading. Out of compassion for beings I surveyed the world with the eye of a Buddha. Surveying the world with the eye of a Buddha, I saw beings with little dust in their eyes and with much dust in their eyes, with keen faculties and with dull faculties, with good qualities and with bad qualities, easy to teach and hard to teach, and some that dwelt seeing fear in blame and in the other world.<\/p>\n

\u201cJust as in a pond of blue or red or white lotuses, some lotuses that are born and grow in the water thrive immersed in the water without rising out of it, and some other lotuses that are born and grow in water rest on the water\u2019s surface, and some other lotuses that are born and grow in the water rise out of the water and stand clear, unwetted by it; so too, surveying the world\u2026 and some that dwelt seeing fear in blame and in the other world.<\/p>\n

\u201cThen I replied to the Divinity Sahampati in stanzas:<\/p>\n

\u201c\u2018Open for them are the Deathless\u2019 doors,
\nLet those that hear now show their faith,
\nSeeing the bother I spoke not for men
\nDhamma subtle and sublime, Divinity.\u2019<\/p>\n

\u201cThen the Divinity Sahampati\u00a0thought:\u00a0\u2018I have made it possible for the Dhamma to be taught by the Blessed One.\u2019 And after paying homage to me, keeping me on the right, the Divinity departed.<\/p>\n

\u201cI\u00a0considered\u00a0thus: \u2018To whom should I first teach the Dhamma? Who will soon understand this Dhamma?\u2019<\/p>\n

\u201cI\u00a0considered\u00a0thus: \u2018\u0100l\u0101ra K\u0101l\u0101ma is wise, learned and discerning. He has long had little dust in his eyes. Suppose I taught the Dhamma first to \u0100l\u0101ra K\u0101l\u0101ma? He will soon understand it.\u2019<\/p>\n

\u201cThen gods approached me and said: \u2018Venerable Sir, \u0100l\u0101ra K\u0101l\u0101ma died seven days ago.\u2019 And the knowledge and vision arose in me: \u2018Alara Kalama died seven days ago.\u2019 I\u00a0considered\u00a0thus: \u2018Alara Kalama\u2019s loss is a great one. If he had heard this Dhamma, he would soon have understood it.\u2019<\/p>\n

\u201cI\u00a0considered\u00a0thus: \u2018To whom should I first teach the Dhamma? Who will understand this Dhamma?\u2019<\/p>\n

\u201cI\u00a0considered\u00a0thus: \u2018Uddaka R\u0101maputta is wise, learned and discerning. He has long had little dust in his eyes. Suppose I taught the Dhamma first to Uddaka R\u0101maputta? He will soon understand it.\u2019<\/p>\n

\u201cThen gods approached me and said: \u2018Venerable Sir, Uddaka R\u0101maputta died last night.\u2019 And the knowledge and vision in me: \u2018Uddaka R\u0101maputta died last night.\u2019 I\u00a0considered\u00a0thus: \u2018Uddaka R\u0101maputta\u2019s loss is a great one. If he had heard this Dhamma, he would soon have understood it.\u2019<\/p>\n

\u201cI\u00a0considered\u00a0thus: \u2018To whom should I first teach the Dhamma? Who will understand this Dhamma?\u2019<\/p>\n

\u201cI\u00a0considered\u00a0thus: \u2018The bhikkhus of the group of five, who attended me while I was engaged in the struggle for control were very helpful. Suppose I taught the Dhamma first to them?\u2019<\/p>\n

\u201cI\u00a0considered\u00a0thus: \u2018Where are the bhikkhus of the group of five living now?\u2019 And with the heavenly eyesight, which is purified and surpasses the human, I saw that they were living at Benares in the Deer Park at Isipatana.<\/p>\n

\u201cThen when I had stayed at Uruvel\u0101 as long as I chose, I set out to go by stages to Benares. \u2026<\/p>\n

Dhamma is very subtle<\/p>\n

Then Prince, it occurred to me: \u2018This Dhamma, won to by me is deep, difficult to see, difficult to understand, tranquil, excellent, beyond dialectic, subtle, intelligible to the learned. But this is a creation delighting in sensual pleasure, delighted by sensual pleasure, rejoicing in sensual pleasure. So that for a creation delighting in sensual pleasure, delighted by sensual pleasure, rejoicing in sensual pleasure, this were a matter difficult to see, that is to say causal uprising by way of condition. This too were a matter difficult to see, that is to say the tranquillising of all the activities, the renunciation of all attachment, the destruction of craving, dispassion, stopping, nibb\u0101na. But if I were to teach Dhamma and others were not to understand me, that would be a weariness to me, that would be a vexation to me.<\/p>\n

Moreover, Prince, these verses not heard before in the past spontaneously occurred to me:<\/p>\n

This that through many toils I’ve won,
\nEnough! why should I make it known?
\nBy folk with lust and hate consumed
\nThis Dhamma is not understood.<\/p>\n

Leading on against the stream,
\nDeep, subtle, difficult to see, delicate,
\nUnseen \u2018twill be by passion’s slaves,
\nCloaked in the murk of ignorance.<\/p>\n

In such wise, as I was pondering,
\nPrince, my mind inclined to little effort
\nand not teaching Dhamma.<\/p>\n

Then, Prince, it occurred to Brahm\u0101 Sahampati who knew with his mind the reasoning in my mind: \u2018Alas, the world is lost, alas, the world is destroyed, inasmuch as the mind of the Tath\u0101gata, the perfected one, the fully awakened one, inclines to little effort and not to teaching Dhamma.\u2019 Then, Prince, as a strong man might stretch out his bent arm, or might bend back his outstretched arm, even so did Brahm\u0101 Sahampati, vanishing from the Brahm\u0101-world, become manifest before me. Then, Prince, Brahm\u0101 Sahampati, having arranged his upper robe over one shoulder, having saluted me with joined palms, spoke thus to me: \u2018Lord, let the Lord teach Dhamma, let the well-farer teach Dhamma; there are beings with little dust in their eyes who; not hearing Dhamma, are decaying, (but if) they are learners of Dhamma they will grow.\u2019 Thus spoke Brahm\u0101 Sahampati to me, Prince; having said this, he further spoke thus:<\/p>\n

\u2018There has appeared in Magadha before thee,
\nAn unclean dhamma by (minds) with stains devised.
\nOpen this door of deathlessness;
\nlet them hear Dhamma awakened to by the stainless one.<\/p>\n

As on a crag on crest of mountain standing,
\nA man might watch the people all around,
\nE’en so do thou, O Wisdom fair, ascending,
\nO Seer of all, the terraced heights of truth.
\nLook down, from grief released, upon the peoples,
\nSunken in grief, oppressed with birth and age.<\/p>\n

Arise, thou hero! Conqueror in the battle!
\nThou leader of the caravan, without a debt!
\nWalk in the world. Let the Blessed One Teach Dhamma;
\nthey who learn will grow.\u2019<\/p>\n

And then I, Prince, having understood Brahm\u0101’s entreaty, out of compassion surveyed the world with the eye of an Awakened One. As I, Prince, was surveying the world with the eye of an Awakened One, I saw beings with little dust in their eyes, with much dust in their eyes, with acute faculties with dull faculties, of good dispositions, of bad dispositions, docile, indocile, few seeing from fear sins and the world beyond. Even as in a pond of blue lotuses or in a pond of red lotuses or in a pond of white lotuses, a few red lotuses, a few blue lotuses, a few white lotuses are born in the water, grow in the water, do not rise above the water but thrive while altogether immersed; a few blue lotuses, a few red lotuses, a few white lotuses are born in the water, grow in the water and reach the surface of the water a few blue lotuses, a few red lotuses, a few white lotuses are born in the water, grow in the water and stand rising out of the water, undefiled by the water; even so did I, Prince, surveying the world with the eye of an Awakened One, see beings with little dust in their eyes, with much dust in their eyes, with acute faculties, with dull faculties, of good dispositions, of bad dispositions, docile, indocile, few seeing from fear sins and the world beyond.<\/p>\n

Then I, Prince, addressed Brahm\u0101 Sahampati in verses:<\/p>\n

Opened for those who hear
\nare the doors of the Deathless, Brahm\u0101,
\nLet them give forth their faith;
\nThinking of useless fatigue, Brahm\u0101,
\nI have not preached Dhamma Sublime
\nand excellent for men.<\/p>\n

Then, Prince, Brahm\u0101 Sahampati, thinking: \u2018The opportunity was made by me for the Lord to teach Dhamma,\u2019 having greeted me, keeping his right side towards me, vanished then and there.<\/p>\n

Who to Teach?<\/p>\n

Then it occurred to me, Prince: \u2018Now, to whom should I first teach this Dhamma? Who will understand this Dhamma quickly?\u2019 Then it occurred to me, Prince: \u2018Indeed this \u0100\u1e37\u0101ra the K\u0101l\u0101ma is learned, experienced, wise, and for a long time has had little dust in his eyes. Suppose that I were to teach Dhamma first to \u0100\u1e37\u0101ra the K\u0101l\u0101ma he will understand this Dhamma quickly. Then devat\u0101s having approached me, spoke thus: Lord, \u0100\u1e37\u0101ra the K\u0101l\u0101ma passed away seven days ago.\u2019 So knowledge and vision arose in me that \u0100\u1e37\u0101ra the K\u0101l\u0101ma had passed away seven days ago. Then it occurred to me, Prince: \u2018\u0100\u1e37\u0101ra the K\u0101l\u0101ma has suffered a great loss. For if he had heard this Dhamma, he would have understood it quickly.\u2019<\/p>\n

Then it occurred to me, Prince: \u2018Now, to whom could I first teach this Dhamma? Who will understand this Dhamma quickly? Then it occurred to me, Prince: \u2018This Uddaka, R\u0101ma’s son, is learned, experienced, wise, and for a long time has had little dust in his eyes. Suppose that I were to teach Dhamma first to Uddaka, R\u0101ma’s son? He will understand this Dhamma quickly,\u2019 Then, Prince,\u00a0devat\u0101s,\u00a0having approached me, spoke thus: \u2018Lord, Uddaka, R\u0101ma’s son, passed away last night.\u2019 So knowledge and vision arose in me that Uddaka, R\u0101ma’s son, had passed away last night. Then it occurred to me, Prince: \u2018Uddaka, R\u0101ma’s son, has suffered a great loss. For if he had heard this Dhamma, he would have understood it quickly.<\/p>\n

Then it occurred to me, Prince: \u2018Now to whom could I first teach this Dhamma? Who will understand this Dhamma quickly? Then it occurred to me, Prince: \u2018This group of five monks who waited on me when I was self-resolute in striving, were very helpful. Suppose that I were to teach Dhamma first to this group of five monks? Then it occurred to me, Prince: \u2018But where is the group of five monks staying at present? Then, monks I saw with deva-vision, purified and surpassing that of men, the group of five monks staying near Benares at Isipatana in the deer-park.<\/p>\n
