S\u0101vatth\u012b in Jeta\u2019s Grove, An\u0101thapi\u1e47\u1e0dika\u2019s monastery.\u00a0Then Princess Suman\u0101, escorted by five hundred chariots and five hundred royal maidens, went up to the Buddha, bowed, sat down to one side, and said to him:<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSir, suppose there were two disciples equal in faith, ethics, and wisdom.\u00a0One is a giver, one is not.\u00a0When their body breaks up, after death, they\u2019re reborn in a good place, a heavenly realm.\u00a0When they have become gods, would there be any distinction or difference between them?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThere would be, Suman\u0101,\u201d said the Buddha.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAs a god, the one who was a giver would surpass the other in five respects:\u00a0divine lifespan, beauty, happiness, fame, and sovereignty.\u00a0As a god, the one who was a giver would surpass the other in these five respects.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBut sir, if they pass away from there and come back to this state of existence was a giver would surpass the other in five respects:\u00a0human lifespan, beauty, happiness, fame, and sovereignty.\u00a0As a human being, the one who was a giver would surpass the other in these five respects.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBut sir, if they both go forth from the lay life to homelessness, would there still be any distinction or difference between them?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThere would be, Suman\u0101,\u201d said the Buddha.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAs a renunciate, the one who was a giver would surpass the other in five respects.\u00a0They\u2019d usually use only what they\u2019ve been invited to accept\u2014robes, almsfood, lodgings, and medicines and supplies for the sick\u2014rarely using them without invitation.\u00a0When living with other spiritual practitioners, they usually treat them agreeably by way of body, speech, and mind, rarely disagreeably.\u00a0As a renunciate, the one who was a giver would surpass the other in these five respects.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBut sir, if they both attain perfection, as perfected ones would there still be any distinction or difference between them?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIn that case, I say there is no difference between the freedom of one and the freedom of the other.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s incredible, sir, it\u2019s amazing!\u00a0Just this much is quite enough to justify giving gifts and making merit.\u00a0For merit is helpful for those who have become gods, human beings, and renunciates.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat\u2019s so true, Suman\u0101.\u00a0It\u2019s quite enough to justify giving gifts and making say:<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe moon so immaculate,<br \/>\njourneying across the dimension of space;<br \/>\noutshines with its radiance<br \/>\nall the world\u2019s stars.<\/p>\n<p>So too, a faithful individual,<br \/>\nperfect in ethics,<br \/>\noutshines with their generosity<br \/>\nall the world\u2019s stingy people.<\/p>\n<p>The thundering rain cloud,<br \/>\nits hundred peaks wreathed in lightning,<br \/>\npours down over the rich earth,<br \/>\nsoaking the uplands and valleys.<\/p>\n<p>Even so, an astute person accomplished in vision,<br \/>\na disciple of the fully awakened Buddha,<br \/>\nsurpasses a stingy person<br \/>\nin five respects:<\/p>\n<p>long life and fame,<br \/>\nbeauty and happiness.<br \/>\nLavished with riches,<br \/>\nthey depart to rejoice in The generous one, having become a deva, would surpass the other in these five ways.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBut, Bhante, if these two pass away from there and again become human beings, would there still be some distinction or difference between them?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThere would be, Suman\u0101,\u201d the Blessed One said. \u201cWhen they again become human beings, the generous one would surpass the other in five ways: in human life span, human beauty, human happiness, human fame, and human authority. When they again become human beings, the generous one would surpass the other in these five ways.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBut, Bhante, if these two should go forth from the household life into homelessness, would there still be some distinction or difference between them?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThere would be, Suman\u0101,\u201d the Blessed One said. \u201cThe generous one, having gone forth, would surpass the other in five ways. (1) He would usually use a robe that has been specifically offered to him, seldom one that had not been specifically offered to him. (2) He would usually eat almsfood that has been specifically offered to him, seldom almsfood that had not been specifically offered to him. (3) He would usually use a lodging that had been specifically offered to him, seldom one that had not been specifically offered to him. (4) He would usually use medicines and provisions for the sick that had been specifically offered to him, seldom those that had not been specifically offered to him. (5) His fellow monastics, those with whom he dwells, would usually behave toward him in agreeable ways by bodily, verbal, and mental action, seldom in disagreeable ways. They would usually present him what is agreeable, seldom\u00a0what is disagreeable. The generous one, having gone forth, would surpass the other in these five ways.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBut, Bhante, if both attain arahantship, would there still be some distinction or difference between them after they have attained arahantship?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIn this case, Suman\u0101, I declare, there would be no difference between the liberation\u00a0of one\u00a0and the liberation\u00a0of the other.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s astounding and amazing, Bhante! Truly, one has good reason to give alms and do meritorious deeds, since they will be helpful if one becomes a deva,\u00a0again\u00a0becomes a human being, or goes forth.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSo it is, Suman\u0101! So it is, Suman\u0101! Truly, one has good reason to give alms and do meritorious deeds, since they will be helpful if one becomes a deva,\u00a0again\u00a0becomes a human being, or goes forth.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>This is what the Blessed One said. Having said this, the Fortunate One, the Teacher, further said this:<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAs the stainless moon<br \/>\nmoving through the sphere of space<br \/>\noutshines with its radiance<br \/>\nall the stars in the world,<br \/>\nso one accomplished in virtuous behavior,<br \/>\na person endowed with faith,<br \/>\noutshines by generosity<br \/>\nall the misers in the world.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAs the hundred-peaked rain cloud,<br \/>\nthundering, wreathed in lightning,<br \/>\npours down rain upon the earth,<br \/>\ninundating the plains and lowlands,<br \/>\nso the Perfectly Enlightened
