He went to see Venerable \u0100nanda at Jeta\u2019s grove, An\u0101thapi\u1e47\u1e0dika\u2019s monastery, bowed, sat down to one side, and said to him:<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSir, Venerable S\u0101riputta has become fully extinguished.\u00a0This is his bowl and robe.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cReverend Cunda, we should see the Buddha about this matter.\u00a0Come, let\u2019s go to the Buddha and inform him about this.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes, sir,\u201d replied Cunda.<\/p>\n<p>Then \u0100nanda and Cunda went to the Buddha, bowed, sat down to one side, and said to him:<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSir, this novice Cunda says that\u00a0Venerable S\u0101riputta has become fully extinguished.\u00a0This is his bowl and robe.\u00a0Since I heard this, my body feels like it\u2019s drugged. I\u2019m disorientated, and the teachings don\u2019t spring to mind.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWell, \u0100nanda, when S\u0101riputta became fully extinguished, did he take away your entire spectrum of ethical conduct, of immersion, of wisdom, of freedom, or of the knowledge and vision of freedom?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo, sir, he did not.\u00a0But Venerable S\u0101riputta was my adviser and counselor. He educated, encouraged, fired up, and inspired me. He never tired of teaching the Dhamma, and he supported his spiritual companions.\u00a0I remember the nectar of the teaching, the riches of the teaching, the support of the teaching given by Venerable S\u0101riputta.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201c\u0100nanda, did I not prepare for this when I explained that\u00a0we must be parted and separated from all we hold dear and beloved?\u00a0How could it possibly be so that what is born, created, conditioned, and liable to wear out should not wear out?\u00a0That is not possible.<\/p>\n<p>Suppose there was a large tree standing with heartwood, and the largest branch fell off.\u00a0In the same way, in the great Sa\u1e45gha that stands with heartwood, S\u0101riputta has become fully extinguished.<\/p>\n<p>How could it possibly be so that what is born, created, conditioned, and liable to wear out should not wear out?\u00a0That is not possible.<\/p>\n<p>So \u0100nanda, live as your own island, your own refuge, with no other refuge. Let the teaching be your island and your refuge, with no other refuge.<\/p>\n<p>And how does a mendicant do this?\u00a0It\u2019s when a mendicant meditates by observing an aspect of the body\u2014keen, aware, and mindful, rid of desire and aversion for the world.\u00a0They meditate observing an aspect of feelings \u2026\u00a0mind \u2026\u00a0principles\u2014keen, aware, and mindful, rid of desire and aversion for the world.<\/p>\n<p>That\u2019s how a mendicant lives as their own island, their own refuge, with no other refuge. That\u2019s how the teaching is their island and their refuge, with no other refuge.<\/p>\n<p>Whether now or after I have passed, any who shall live as their own island, their own refuge, with no other refuge; with the teaching as their island and their refuge, with no other refuge\u2014those mendicants of mine who want to train shall be among the best of the best.\u201d<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><a href=\"https:\/\/suttacentral.net\/sn47.13\/en\/sujato\">https:\/\/suttacentral.net\/sn47.13\/en\/sujato<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<blockquote><p><strong>English translation by Bhikkhu Bodhi<\/strong><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>On one occasion the Blessed One was dwelling at Savatthi in Jeta\u2019s Grove, Anathapi\u1e47\u1e0dika\u2019s Park. Now on that occasion the Venerable S\u0101riputta was dwelling among the Magadhans at Nalakagama\u2014sick, afflicted, gravely ill\u2014and the novice Cunda was his attendant. Then, because of that illness, the Venerable S\u0101riputta attained final Nibb\u0101na.<\/p>\n<p>The novice Cunda, taking the Venerable S\u0101riputta\u2019s bowl and robe, went to Savatthi, to Jeta\u2019s Grove, Anathapi\u1e47\u1e0dika\u2019s Park. There he approached the Venerable \u0100nanda, paid homage to him, sat down to one side, and said to him:\u00a0\u201cVenerable sir, the Venerable S\u0101riputta has attained final Nibb\u0101na. Come, friend Cunda, let us go to the Blessed One and report this matter to him.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes, venerable sir,\u201d the novice Cunda replied.<\/p>\n<p>Then the Venerable \u0100nanda and the novice Cunda approached the Blessed One, paid homage to him, and sat down to one side. The Venerable \u0100nanda then said to the Blessed One: \u201cThis novice Cunda, venerable sir, says that the Venerable S\u0101riputta has attained final Nibb\u0101na, and this is his bowl and robe. Venerable sir, since I heard that the Venerable S\u0101riputta has attained final Nibb\u0101na, my body seems as if it has been drugged, I have become disoriented, the teachings are no longer clear to me.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhy, \u0100nanda, when S\u0101riputta attained final Nibb\u0101na, did he take away your aggregate of virtue, or your aggregate of concentration, or your aggregate of wisdom, or your aggregate of liberation, or your aggregate of the knowledge and vision of liberation?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo, he did not, venerable sir. But for me the Venerable S\u0101riputta was an advisor and counsellor, one who instructed, exhorted, inspired, and gladdened me. He was unwearying in teaching the Dhamma; he was helpful to his brothers in the holy life. We recollect the nourishment of Dhamma, the wealth of Dhamma, the help of Dhamma given by the Venerable S\u0101riputta.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBut have I not already declared, \u0100nanda, that we must be parted, separated, and severed from all who are dear and agreeable to us?\u00a0How, \u0100nanda, is it to be obtained here: \u2018May what is born, come to be, conditioned, and subject to disintegration not disintegrate!\u2019? That is impossible. It is just as if the largest branch would break off a great tree standing possessed of heartwood: so too, \u0100nanda, in the great Bhikkhu Sa\u1e45gha standing possessed of heartwood, S\u0101riputta has attained final Nibb\u0101na. How, \u0100nanda, is it to be obtained here: \u2018May what is born, come to be, conditioned, and subject to disintegration not disintegrate!\u2019? That is impossible.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cTherefore, \u0100nanda, dwell with yourselves as your own island, with yourselves as your own refuge, with no other refuge; dwell with the Dhamma as your island, with the Dhamma as your refuge, with no other refuge \u2026\u00a0as in \u00a79\u00a0\u2026 Those bhikkhus, \u0100nanda, either now or after I am gone, who dwell with themselves as their own island, with themselves as their own refuge, with no other refuge; who dwell with the Dhamma as their island, with the Dhamma as their refuge, with no other refuge\u2014it is these bhikkhus, \u0100nanda, who
