What four? One of little learning who is not intent on what he has learned; one of little learning who is intent on what he has learned; one of much learning who is not intent on what he has learned; and one of much learning who is intent on what he has learned.<\/p>\n<p>(1) \u201cAnd how is a person one of little learning who is not intent on what he has learned?\u00a0Here, someone has learned little\u2014that is, of the discourses, mixed prose and verse, expositions, verses, inspired utterances, quotations, birth stories, amazing accounts, and questions-and-answers\u2014but he does not understand the meaning of what he has learned; he does not understand the Dhamma; and he does not practice in accordance with the Dhamma. In such a way, a person is one of little learning who is not intent on what he has learned.<\/p>\n<p>(2) \u201cAnd how is a person one of little learning who is intent on what he has learned? Here, someone has learned little\u2014that is, of the discourses \u2026 questions-and-answers\u2014but having understood the meaning of what he has learned, and having understood the Dhamma, he practices in accordance with the Dhamma. In such a way, a person is one of little learning who is intent on what he has learned.<\/p>\n<p>(3) \u201cAnd how is a person one of much learning who is not intent on what he has learned? Here, someone has learned much\u2014that is, of the discourses \u2026 questions-and-answers\u2014but he does not understand the meaning of what he has learned; he does not understand the Dhamma; and he does not practice in accordance with the Dhamma. In such a way, a person is one of much learning who is not intent on what he has learned.<\/p>\n<p>(4) \u201cAnd how is a person one of much learning who is intent on what he has learned? Here, someone has learned much\u2014that is, of the discourses \u2026 questions-and-answers\u2014and having understood the meaning of what he has learned, and having understood the Dhamma, he practices in accordance with the Dhamma. In such a way, a person is one of much learning who is intent on what he has learned.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThese, bhikkhus, are the four kinds of persons found existing in the world.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>If one has little learning<br \/>\nand is not settled in the virtues,<br \/>\nthey criticize him on both counts,<br \/>\nvirtuous behavior and learning.<\/p>\n<p>If one has little learning<br \/>\nbut is well settled in the virtues,<br \/>\nthey praise him for his virtuous behavior;<br \/>\nhis learning has succeeded.<\/p>\n<p>If one is highly learned<br \/>\nbut is not settled in the virtues,<br \/>\nthey criticize him for his lack of virtue;<br \/>\nhis learning has not succeeded.<\/p>\n<p>If one is highly learned<br \/>\nand is settled in the virtues,<br \/>\nthey praise him on both counts,<br \/>\nvirtuous behavior and learning.<\/p>\n<p>When a disciple of the Buddha is highly learned,<br \/>\nan expert on the Dhamma, endowed with wisdom,<br \/>\nlike a coin of refined mountain gold,<br \/>\nwho is fit to blame him?<br \/>\nEven the devas praise such a one;<br \/>\nby Brahm\u0101 too he is praised.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><a
