So I have heard.\u00a0At one time the Buddha was wandering in the land of the Kosalans together with a large Sa\u1e45gha of mendicants when he arrived at a village of the Kosalan brahmins named S\u0101l\u0101.<\/p>\n

The brahmins and householders of S\u0101l\u0101 heard,\u00a0\u201cIt seems the ascetic Gotama\u2014a Sakyan, gone forth from a Sakyan family\u2014while wandering in the land of the Kosalans has arrived at S\u0101l\u0101, together with a large Sa\u1e45gha of mendicants.\u00a0He has this good reputation:\u00a0\u2018That Blessed One is perfected, a fully awakened Buddha, accomplished in knowledge and conduct, holy, knower of the world, supreme guide for those who wish to train, teacher of gods and humans, awakened, blessed.\u2019\u00a0He has realized with his own insight this world\u2014with its gods, M\u0101ras and Brahm\u0101s, this population with its ascetics and brahmins, gods and humans\u2014and he makes it known to others.\u00a0He proclaims a teaching that is good in the beginning, good in the middle, and good in the end, with the right meaning and phrasing.\u00a0He reveals an entirely full and pure spiritual life.\u00a0It\u2019s good to see such perfected ones.\u201d<\/p>\n

Then the brahmins and householders of S\u0101l\u0101 went up to the Buddha. Before sitting down to one side, some bowed, some exchanged greetings and polite conversation, some held up their joined palms toward the Buddha, some announced their name and clan, while some kept silent. Seated to one side they said to the Buddha:<\/p>\n

\u201cWhat is the cause, Master Gotama, what is the reason why some sentient beings, when their body breaks up, after death, are reborn in a place of loss, a bad place, the underworld, hell?\u00a0And what is the cause, Master Gotama, what is the reason why some sentient beings, when their body breaks up, after death, are reborn in a good place, a heavenly realm?\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cUnprincipled and immoral conduct is the reason why some sentient beings, when their body breaks up, after death, are reborn in a place of loss, a bad place, the underworld, hell.\u00a0Principled and moral conduct is the reason why some sentient beings, when their body breaks up, after death, are reborn in a good place, a heavenly realm.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cWe don\u2019t understand the detailed meaning of Master Gotama\u2019s brief statement.\u00a0Master Gotama, please teach us this matter in detail so we can understand the meaning.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cWell then, householders, listen and pay close attention, I will speak.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cYes, sir,\u201d they replied.\u00a0The Buddha said this:<\/p>\n

\u201cHouseholders, unprincipled and immoral conduct is threefold by way of body, fourfold by way of speech, and threefold by way of mind.<\/p>\n

And how is unprincipled and immoral conduct threefold by way of body?\u00a0It\u2019s when a certain person kills living creatures. They\u2019re violent, bloody-handed, a hardened killer, merciless to living beings.<\/p>\n

They steal. With the intention to commit theft, they take the wealth or belongings of others from village or wilderness.<\/p>\n

They commit sexual misconduct. They have sexual relations with women who have their mother, father, both mother and father, brother, sister, relatives, or clan as guardian. They have sexual relations with a woman who is protected on principle, or who has a husband, or whose violation is punishable by law, or even one who has been garlanded as a token of betrothal.\u00a0This is how unprincipled and immoral conduct is threefold by way of body.<\/p>\n

And how is unprincipled and immoral conduct fourfold by way of speech?\u00a0It\u2019s when a certain person lies. They\u2019re summoned to a council, an assembly, a family meeting, a guild, or to the royal court, and asked to bear witness: \u2018Please, mister, say what you know.\u2019 Not knowing, they say \u2018I know.\u2019 Knowing, they say \u2018I don\u2019t know.\u2019 Not seeing, they say \u2018I see.\u2019 And seeing, they say \u2018I don\u2019t see.\u2019 So they deliberately lie for the sake of themselves or another, or for some trivial worldly reason.<\/p>\n

They speak divisively. They repeat in one place what they heard in another so as to divide people against each other. And so they divide those who are harmonious, supporting division, delighting in division, loving division, speaking words that promote division.<\/p>\n

They speak harshly. They use the kinds of words that are cruel, nasty, hurtful, offensive, bordering on anger, not leading to immersion.<\/p>\n

They talk nonsense. Their speech is untimely, and is neither factual nor beneficial. It has nothing to do with the teaching or the training. Their words have no value, and are untimely, unreasonable, rambling, and pointless.\u00a0This is how unprincipled and immoral conduct is fourfold by way of speech.<\/p>\n

And how is unprincipled and immoral conduct threefold by way of mind?\u00a0It’s when a certain person is covetous. They covet the wealth and belongings of others: \u2018Oh, if only their belongings were mine!\u2019<\/p>\n

They have ill will and malicious intentions: \u2018May these sentient beings be killed, slaughtered, slain, destroyed, or annihilated!\u2019<\/p>\n

They have wrong view. Their perspective is distorted:\u00a0\u2018There\u2019s no meaning in giving, sacrifice, or offerings. There\u2019s no fruit or result of good and bad deeds. There\u2019s no afterlife. There\u2019s no obligation to mother and father. No beings are reborn spontaneously. And there\u2019s no ascetic or brahmin who is well attained and practiced, and who describes the afterlife after realizing it with their own insight.\u2019\u00a0This is how unprincipled and immoral conduct is threefold by way of mind.<\/p>\n

That\u2019s how unprincipled and immoral conduct is the reason why some sentient beings, when their body breaks up, after death, are reborn in a place of loss, a bad place, the underworld, hell.<\/p>\n

Householders, principled and moral conduct is threefold by way of body, fourfold by way of speech, and threefold by way of mind.<\/p>\n

And how is principled and moral conduct threefold by way of body?\u00a0It\u2019s when a certain person gives up killing living creatures. They renounce the rod and the sword. They\u2019re scrupulous and kind, living full of compassion for all living beings.<\/p>\n

They give up stealing. They don\u2019t, with the intention to commit theft, take the wealth or belongings of others from village or wilderness.<\/p>\n

They give up sexual misconduct. They don\u2019t have sexual relations with women who have their mother, father, both mother and father, brother, sister, relatives, or clan as guardian. They don\u2019t have sexual relations with a woman who is protected on principle, or who has a husband, or whose violation is punishable by law, or even one who has been garlanded as a token of betrothal.\u00a0This is how principled and moral conduct is threefold by way of body.<\/p>\n

And how is principled and moral conduct fourfold by way of speech?\u00a0It\u2019s when a certain person gives up lying. They give up divisive speech. They don\u2019t repeat in one place what they heard in another so as to divide people against each other. Instead, they reconcile those who are divided, supporting unity, delighting in harmony, loving harmony, speaking words that promote harmony.<\/p>\n

They give up harsh speech. They speak in a way that\u2019s mellow, pleasing to the ear, lovely, going to the heart, polite, likable, and agreeable to the people.<\/p>\n

They give up talking nonsense. Their words are timely, true, and meaningful, in line with the teaching and training. They say things at the right time which are valuable, reasonable, succinct, and beneficial.\u00a0This is how principled and moral conduct is fourfold by way of speech.<\/p>\n

And how is principled and moral conduct threefold by way of mind?\u00a0It’s when a certain person is not covetous. They don\u2019t covet the wealth and belongings of others: \u2018Oh, if only their belongings were mine!\u2019<\/p>\n

They have a kind heart and loving intentions: \u2018May these sentient beings live free of enmity and ill will, untroubled and happy!\u2019<\/p>\n

They have right view, an undistorted perspective:\u00a0\u2018There is meaning in giving, sacrifice, and offerings. There are fruits and results of good and bad deeds. There is an afterlife. There is obligation to mother and father. There are beings reborn spontaneously. And there are ascetics and brahmins who are well attained and practiced, and who describe the afterlife after realizing it with their own insight.\u2019\u00a0This is how principled and moral conduct is threefold by way of mind.<\/p>\n

This is how principled and moral conduct is the reason why some sentient beings, when their body breaks up, after death, are reborn in a good place, a heavenly realm.<\/p>\n

A person of principled and moral conduct might wish:\u00a0\u2018If only, when my body breaks up, after death, I would be reborn in the company of well-to-do aristocrats!\u2019\u00a0It\u2019s possible that this might happen.\u00a0Why is that?\u00a0Because they have principled and moral conduct.<\/p>\n

A person of principled and moral conduct might wish:\u00a0\u2018If only, when my body breaks up, after death, I would be reborn in the company of well-to-do brahmins \u2026\u00a0well-to-do householders \u2026\u00a0the Gods of the Four Great Kings \u2026\u00a0the Gods of the Thirty-Three \u2026\u00a0the Gods of Yama \u2026\u00a0the Joyful Gods \u2026\u00a0the Gods Who Love to Create \u2026\u00a0the Gods Who Control the Creations of Others \u2026\u00a0the Gods of Brahm\u0101\u2019s Host \u2026\u00a0the Radiant Gods \u2026\u00a0the Gods of Limited Radiance \u2026\u00a0the Gods of Limitless Radiance \u2026\u00a0the Gods of Streaming Radiance \u2026\u00a0the Gods of Limited Glory \u2026\u00a0the Gods of Limitless Glory \u2026\u00a0the Gods Replete with Glory \u2026\u00a0the Gods of Abundant Fruit \u2026\u00a0the Gods of Aviha \u2026\u00a0the Gods of Atappa \u2026\u00a0the Gods Fair to See \u2026\u00a0the Fair Seeing Gods \u2026\u00a0the Gods of Akani\u1e6d\u1e6dha \u2026\u00a0the gods of the dimension of infinite space \u2026\u00a0the gods of the dimension of infinite consciousness \u2026\u00a0the gods of the dimension of nothingness \u2026\u00a0the gods of the dimension of neither perception nor non-perception.\u2019\u00a0It\u2019s possible that this might happen.\u00a0Why is that?\u00a0Because they have principled and moral conduct.<\/p>\n

A person of principled and moral conduct might wish:\u00a0\u2018If only I might realize the undefiled freedom of heart and freedom by wisdom in this very life, and live having realized it with my own insight due to the ending of defilements.\u2019\u00a0It\u2019s possible that this might happen.\u00a0Why is that?\u00a0Because they have principled and moral conduct.\u201d<\/p>\n

When he had spoken, the brahmins and householders of S\u0101l\u0101 said to the Buddha,\u00a0\u201cExcellent, Master Gotama! Excellent!\u00a0As if he were righting the overturned, or revealing the hidden, or pointing out the path to the lost, or lighting a lamp in the dark so people with good eyes can see what\u2019s there, Master Gotama has made the teaching clear in many ways.\u00a0We go for refuge to Master Gotama, to the teaching, and to the mendicant Sa\u1e45gha.\u00a0From this day forth, may Master Gotama remember us as lay followers who have gone for refuge for life.\u201d<\/p>\n

Thus have I heard. On one occasion the Blessed One was wandering by stages in the Kosalan Country with a large Sangha of bhikkhus, and eventually he arrived at a Kosalan brahmin village named S\u0101l\u0101.<\/p>\n

The brahmin householders of S\u0101l\u0101 heard: \u201cThe recluse Gotama, the son of the Sakyans who went forth from a Sakyan clan, has been wandering in the Kosalan country with a large Sangha of bhikkhus and has come to S\u0101l\u0101. Now a good report of Master Gotama has been spread to this effect: \u2018That Blessed One is accomplished, fully enlightened, perfect in true knowledge and conduct, sublime, knower of worlds, incomparable leader of persons to be tamed, teacher of gods and humans, enlightened, blessed. He declares this world with its gods, its M\u0101ras, and its Brahm\u0101s, this generation with its recluses and brahmins, its princes and its people, which he has himself realised with direct knowledge. He teaches the Dhamma good in the beginning, good in the middle, and good in the end, with the right meaning and phrasing, and he reveals a holy life that is utterly perfect and pure.\u2019 Now it is good to see such arahants.\u201d<\/p>\n

Then the brahmin householders of S\u0101l\u0101 went to the Blessed One. Some paid homage to the Blessed One and sat down at one side; some exchanged greetings with him, and when this courteous and amiable talk was finished, sat down at one side; some extended their hands in reverential salutation towards the Blessed One and sat down at one side; some pronounced their name and clan in the Blessed One\u2019s presence and sat down at one side; some kept silent and sat down at one side.<\/p>\n

When they were seated, they said to the Blessed One: \u201cMaster Gotama, what is the cause and condition why some beings here, on the dissolution of the body, after death, reappear in states of deprivation, in an unhappy destination, in perdition, even in hell? And what is the cause and condition why some beings here, on the dissolution of the body, after death, reappear in a happy destination, even in the heavenly world?\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cHouseholders, it is by reason of conduct not in accordance with the Dhamma, by reason of unrighteous conduct that some beings here, on the dissolution of the body, after death, reappear in states of deprivation, in an unhappy destination, in perdition, even in hell. It is by reason of conduct in accordance with the Dhamma, by reason of righteous conduct that some beings here, on the dissolution of the body, after death, reappear in a happy destination, even in the heavenly world.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cWe do not understand the detailed meaning of Master Gotama\u2019s utterance, which he has spoken in brief without expounding the detailed meaning. It would be good if Master Gotama would teach us the Dhamma so that we might understand the detailed meaning of his utterance.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cThen, householders, listen and attend closely to what I shall say.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cYes, venerable sir,\u201d they replied. The Blessed One said this:<\/p>\n

\u201cHouseholders, there are three kinds of bodily conduct not in accordance with the Dhamma, unrighteous conduct. There are four kinds of verbal conduct not in accordance with the Dhamma, unrighteous conduct. There are three kinds of mental conduct not in accordance with the Dhamma, unrighteous conduct.<\/p>\n

\u201cAnd how, householders, are there three kinds of bodily conduct not in accordance with the Dhamma, unrighteous conduct? Here someone kills living beings; he is murderous, bloody-handed, given to blows and violence, merciless to living beings. He takes what is not given; he takes by way of theft the wealth and property of others in the village or forest. He misconducts himself in sensual pleasures; he has intercourse with women who are protected by their mother, father, mother and father, brother, sister, or relatives, who have a husband, who are protected by law, and even with those who are garlanded in token of betrothal. That is how there are three kinds of bodily conduct not in accordance with the Dhamma, unrighteous conduct.<\/p>\n

\u201cAnd how, householders, are there four kinds of verbal conduct not in accordance with the Dhamma, unrighteous conduct? Here someone speaks falsehood; when summoned to a court, or to a meeting, or to his relatives\u2019 presence, or to his guild, or to the royal family\u2019s presence, and questioned as a witness thus: \u2018So, good man, tell what you know,\u2019 not knowing, he says, \u2018I know,\u2019 or knowing, he says, \u2018I do not know\u2019; not seeing, he says, \u2018I see,\u2019 or seeing, he says, \u2018I do not see\u2019; in full awareness he speaks falsehood for his own ends, or for another\u2019s ends, or for some trifling worldly end. He speaks maliciously; he repeats elsewhere what he has heard here in order to divide\u00a0those people\u00a0from these, or he repeats to these people what he has heard elsewhere in order to divide\u00a0these people\u00a0from those; thus he is one who divides those who are united, a creator of divisions, who enjoys discord, rejoices in discord, delights in discord, a speaker of words that create discord. He speaks harshly; he utters such words as are rough, hard, hurtful to others, offensive to others, bordering on anger, unconducive to concentration.\u00a0He is a gossip; he speaks at the wrong time, speaks what is not fact, speaks what is useless, speaks contrary to the Dhamma and the Discipline; at the wrong time he speaks such words as are worthless, unreasonable, immoderate, and unbeneficial. That is how there are four kinds of verbal conduct not in accordance with the Dhamma, unrighteous conduct.<\/p>\n

\u201cAnd how, householders, are there three kinds of mental conduct not in accordance with the Dhamma, unrighteous conduct? Here someone is covetous; he covets the wealth and property of others thus: \u2018Oh, may what belongs to another be mine!\u2019 Or he has a mind of ill will and intentions of hate thus: \u2018May these beings be slain and slaughtered, may they be cut off, perish, or be annihilated!\u2019 Or he has wrong view, distorted vision, thus: \u2018There is nothing given, nothing offered, nothing sacrificed; no fruit or result of good and bad actions; no this world, no other world; no mother, no father; no beings who are reborn spontaneously; no good and virtuous recluses and brahmins in the world who have themselves realised by direct knowledge and declare this world and the other world.\u2019 That is how there are three kinds of mental conduct not in accordance with the Dhamma, unrighteous conduct. So, householders, it is by reason of such conduct not in accordance with the Dhamma, by reason of such unrighteous conduct that some beings here on the dissolution of the body, after death, reappear in states of deprivation, in an unhappy destination, in perdition, even in hell.<\/p>\n

\u201cHouseholders, there are three kinds of bodily conduct in accordance with the Dhamma, righteous conduct. There are four kinds of verbal conduct in accordance with the Dhamma, righteous conduct. There are three kinds of mental conduct in accordance with the Dhamma, righteous conduct.<\/p>\n

\u201cAnd how, householders, are there three kinds of bodily conduct in accordance with the Dhamma, righteous conduct? Here someone, abandoning the killing of living beings, abstains from killing living beings; with rod and weapon laid aside, gentle and kindly, he abides compassionate to all living beings. Abandoning the taking of what is not given, he abstains from taking what is not given; he does not take by way of theft the wealth and property of others in the village or in the forest. Abandoning misconduct in sensual pleasures, he abstains from misconduct in sensual pleasures; he does not have intercourse with women who are protected by their mother, father, mother and father, brother, sister, or relatives, who have a husband, who are protected by law, or with those who are garlanded in token of betrothal. That is how there are three kinds of bodily conduct in accordance with the Dhamma, righteous conduct.<\/p>\n

\u201cAnd how, householders, are there four kinds of verbal conduct in accordance with the Dhamma, righteous conduct? Here someone, abandoning false speech, abstains from false speech; when summoned to a court, or to a meeting, or to his relatives\u2019 presence, or to his guild, or to the royal family\u2019s presence, and questioned as a witness thus: \u2018So, good man, tell what you know,\u2019 not knowing, he says, \u2018I do not know,\u2019 or knowing, he says, \u2018I know\u2019; not seeing, he says, \u2018I do not see,\u2019 or seeing, he says, \u2018I see\u2019; he does not in full awareness speak falsehood for his own ends, or for another\u2019s ends, or for some trifling worldly end. Abandoning malicious speech, he abstains from malicious speech; he does not repeat elsewhere what he has heard here in order to divide\u00a0those people\u00a0from these, nor does he repeat to these people what he has heard elsewhere in order to divide\u00a0these people\u00a0from those; thus he is one who reunites those who are divided, a promoter of friendships, who enjoys concord, rejoices in concord, delights in concord, a speaker of words that promote concord. Abandoning harsh speech, he abstains from harsh speech; he speaks such words as are gentle, pleasing to the ear, and loveable, as go to the heart, are courteous, desired by many, and agreeable to many. Abandoning gossip, he abstains from gossip; he speaks at the right time, speaks what is fact, speaks on what is good, speaks on the Dhamma and the Discipline; at the right time he speaks such words as are worth recording, reasonable, moderate, and beneficial. That is how there are four kinds of verbal conduct in accordance with the Dhamma, righteous conduct.<\/p>\n

\u201cAnd how, householders, are there three kinds of mental conduct in accordance with the Dhamma, righteous conduct? Here someone is not covetous; he does not covet the wealth and property of others thus: \u2018Oh, may what belongs to another be mine!\u2019 His mind is without ill will and he has intentions free from hate thus: \u2018May these beings be free from enmity, affliction and anxiety! May they live happily!\u2019 He has right view, undistorted vision, thus: \u2018There is what is given and what is offered and what is sacrificed; there is fruit and result of good and bad actions; there is this world and the other world; there is mother and father; there are beings who are reborn spontaneously; there are good and virtuous recluses and brahmins in the world who have themselves realised by direct knowledge and declare this world and the other world.\u2019 That is how there are three kinds of mental conduct in accordance with the Dhamma, righteous conduct. So, householders, it is by reason of such conduct in accordance with the Dhamma, by reason of such righteous conduct that some beings here, on the dissolution of the body, after death, reappear in a happy destination, even in the heavenly world.<\/p>\n

\u201cIf, householders, one who observes conduct in accordance with the Dhamma, righteous conduct, should wish: \u2018Oh, that on the dissolution of the body, after death, I might reappear in the company of well-to-do nobles!\u2019 it is possible that, on the dissolution of the body, after death, he will reappear in the company of well-to-do nobles. Why is that? Because he observes conduct that is in accordance with the Dhamma, righteous conduct.<\/p>\n

\u201cIf, householders, one who observes conduct in accordance with the Dhamma, righteous conduct, should wish: \u2018Oh, that on the dissolution of the body, after death, I might reappear in the company of well-to-do brahmins!\u2026in the company of well-to-do householders!\u2019 it is possible that, on the dissolution of the body, after death, he will reappear in the company of well-to-do householders. Why is that? Because he observes conduct that is in accordance with the Dhamma, righteous conduct.<\/p>\n

\u201cIf, householders, one who observes conduct in accordance with the Dhamma, righteous conduct, should wish: \u2018Oh, that on the dissolution of the body, after death, I might reappear in the company of the gods of the heaven of the Four Great Kings!\u2026in the company of the gods of the heaven of the Thirty-three\u2026the Y\u0101ma gods\u2026the gods of the Tusita heaven\u2026the gods who delight in creating\u2026the gods who wield power over others\u2019 creations\u2026the gods of Brahm\u0101\u2019 s retinue\u2026the gods of Radiance \u2026the gods of Limited Radiance\u2026the gods of Immeasurable Radiance\u2026the gods of Streaming Radiance\u2026the gods of Glory\u2026the gods of Limited Glory\u2026the gods of Immeasurable Glory\u2026the gods of Refulgent Glory\u2026the gods of Great Fruit\u2026the Aviha gods\u2026the Atappa gods\u2026the Sudassa gods\u2026the Sudass\u012b gods\u2026the Akani\u1e6d\u1e6dha gods\u2026the gods of the base of infinite space\u2026the gods of the base of infinite consciousness\u2026the gods of the base of nothingness\u2026the gods of the base of neither-perception-nor-non-perception!\u2019 it is possible that on the dissolution of the body, after death, he will reappear in the company of the gods of the base of neither-perception-nor-non-perception. Why is that? Because he observes conduct in accordance with the Dhamma, righteous conduct.<\/p>\n

\u201cIf, householders, one who observes conduct in accordance with the Dhamma, righteous conduct, should wish: \u2018Oh, that by realising for myself with direct knowledge I might here and now enter upon and abide in the deliverance of mind and deliverance by wisdom that are taintless with the destruction of the taints!\u2019 it is possible that, by realising for himself with direct knowledge, he will here and now enter upon and abide in the deliverance of mind and deliverance by wisdom that are taintless with the destruction of the taints. Why is that? Because he observes conduct in accordance with the Dhamma, righteous conduct.\u201d<\/p>\n

When this was said, the brahmin householders of S\u0101l\u0101 said to the Blessed One: \u201cMagnificent, Master Gotama! Magnificent, Master Gotama! Master Gotama has made the Dhamma clear in many ways, as though he were turning upright what had been overthrown, revealing what was hidden, showing the way to one who was lost, or holding up a lamp in the darkness for those with eyesight to see forms. We go to Master Gotama for refuge and to the Dhamma and to the Sangha of bhikkhus. From today let Master Gotama accept us as lay followers who have gone to him for refuge for life.\u201d<\/p>\n

Thus have I heard. On one occasion the Prosperous One was traveling among the Kosalans, together with a large group of monks. He came to a brahmin village of Kosala, named S\u0101l\u0101. The brahmin householders of S\u0101l\u0101 heard, \u201cApparently the contemplative Gotama, a child of the Sakyan clan who became a renunciant, is traveling among the Kosalans together with a large group of monks, and has arrived at S\u0101l\u0101. A good rumor has been circulated about that honorable Gotama: \u2018The Prosperous One is a Worthy One, a Rightly Self-Awakened One; he has perfect knowledge and behavior; he is a Sublime One, a world-knower, an unsurpassed trainer of trainable people, a teacher of angels and humans, an Awakened One, a Prosperous One. He makes known this world with its angels, demons, divinities, contemplatives, priests, its celestial beings and its human beings, having personally realized it with his own superior knowledge. He teaches a Dhamma that is good in the beginning, good in the middle, and good in its conclusion, with the right meaning and phrasing. He demonstrates a spiritual life that is completely thorough and completely pure.\u2019 It is good to see such Worthy Ones.\u201d<\/p>\n

Then the brahmin householders of S\u0101l\u0101 approached the Prosperous One. Some paid respects to the Prosperous One and sat to one side; some conversed with him and sat to one side when the appropriate polite conversation was finished; some held up their hands in\u00a0a\u00f1jali\u00a0and sat to one side; some announced their name and clan and sat to one side; and some remained silent and sat to one side.<\/p>\n

When they were seated to one side, the brahmin householders of S\u0101l\u0101 said to the Prosperous One, \u201cSir Gotama, what is the reason, what is the condition, because of which, when some beings are separated from their bodies after death, they reappear in a state of deprivation, a bad destination, downfall, hell? Sir Gotama, what is the reason, what is the condition, because of which, when some beings are separated from their bodies after death, they reappear in a good destination, a heavenly world?\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cHouseholders, it is because of behavior contrary to Dhamma, behavior contrary to peace, that when some beings are separated from their bodies after death, they reappear in a state of deprivation, a bad destination, downfall, hell. Householders, it is because of behavior consistent with Dhamma, behavior consistent with peace, that when some beings are separated from their bodies after death, they reappear in a good destination, a heavenly world.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cWe do not understand the full meaning of Sir Gotama\u2018s brief statement, that was spoken without an explanation of its full meaning. It would be good if Sir Gotama taught us the Dhamma, such that we might understand the full meaning of Sir Gotama\u2018s brief statement that was spoken without an explanation of its full meaning.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cTherefore, householders, listen well, and pay attention. I will speak.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cYes, sir,\u201d the brahmin householders of S\u0101l\u0101 replied to the Blessed One. The Blessed One said this:<\/p>\n

Causes for Rebirth in Hell<\/p>\n

\u201cHouseholders, there are three kinds of physical behavior that are contrary to Dhamma and contrary to peace. There are four kinds of verbal behavior that are contrary to Dhamma and contrary to peace. There are three kinds of mental behavior that are contrary to Dhamma and contrary to peace.<\/p>\n

\u201cHouseholders, what are the three kinds of physical behavior that are contrary to Dhamma and contrary to peace?<\/p>\n

\u201cHere, householders, someone is a killer, violent, bloody-handed, settled in harming and killing, merciless towards living beings.<\/p>\n

\u201cOne is a taker of what is not given; one steals what belongs to others, whether in a village or a wilderness, when it has not been given to them.<\/p>\n

\u201cOne is a performer of sexual misconduct; one engages in sexual activity with those who are protected by mother, father, parents, brother, sister, relative, family, Dhamma, spouse, law, or betrothal.<\/p>\n

\u201cHouseholders, these are the three kinds of physical behavior that are contrary to Dhamma and contrary to peace.<\/p>\n

\u201cHouseholders, what are the four kinds of verbal behavior that are contrary to Dhamma and contrary to peace?<\/p>\n

\u201cHere, householders, someone is a liar. When one is brought to an assembly, a forum, a group of relatives, a group of businesspeople, or to a royal family, and is asked about what one has seen: \u2018Come, person, say what you know,\u2019 when one does not know one says \u2018I know,\u2019 and when one knows one says \u2018I do not know,\u2019 when one does not see one says \u2018I see,\u2019 when one sees one says \u2018I do not see.\u2019 Thus for one\u2018s own sake, or for another\u2018s sake, or for the sake of a little bit of profit, one knowingly speaks falsely.<\/p>\n

\u201cOne is a speaker of divisive speech. What one has heard here one reports over there in order to create division, and what one has heard over there one reports over here in order to create division. Thus one separates those who are united, worsens divisions, enjoys conflict, likes conflict, delights in conflict, and speaks in ways that create conflict.<\/p>\n

\u201cOne is a speaker of harsh speech. Speech which is sharp, rough, hurtful, abusive, angry, and contributes to distraction1\u00a0\u2013 this is the kind of speech which one speaks.<\/p>\n

\u201cOne is a speaker of useless speech. One speaks at the wrong time; one speaks untruthfully; one speaks unbeneficially; one says things that are not Dhamma; one says things that are not Vinaya. One says things that are not worth treasuring, at the wrong time, unreasonably, immoderately, without any connection to the goal.<\/p>\n

\u201cHouseholders, these are the four kinds of verbal behavior that are contrary to Dhamma and contrary to peace.<\/p>\n

\u201cHouseholders, what are the three kinds of mental behavior that are contrary to Dhamma and contrary to peace?<\/p>\n

\u201cHere, householders, someone is covetous. One covets other people\u2018s possessions, thinking \u2018Oh, if only what was theirs was mine!\u2019<\/p>\n

\u201cOne has an aversive mind with hostile thoughts, such as \u2018May these beings be killed or injured or maimed or lost! They should not exist!\u2019<\/p>\n

\u201cOne has wrong beliefs and distorted perspectives, such as: \u2018There is no gift, no offering, no donation. There is no result or consequence of good deeds or bad deeds. There is no world other than this one. There is no mother and no father. There are no beings who appear without undergoing birth. There are no contemplatives or priests in this world who are on the right path and are practicing correctly, such that they explain both this world and other worlds based on their own direct knowledge.\u2019<\/p>\n

\u201cHouseholders, these are the three kinds of mental behavior that are contrary to Dhamma and contrary to peace.<\/p>\n

Causes for Rebirth in Heaven<\/p>\n

\u201cHouseholders, there are three kinds of physical behavior that are consistent with Dhamma and are consistent with peace. There are four kinds of verbal behavior that are consistent with Dhamma and are consistent with peace. There are three kinds of mental behavior that are consistent with Dhamma and are consistent with peace.<\/p>\n

\u201cHouseholders, what are the three kinds of physical behavior that are consistent with Dhamma and are consistent with peace?<\/p>\n

\u201cHere, householders, someone gives up killing, refrains from killing; they put down their cudgels and knives, they live carefully, sympathetically, compassionate for the welfare of all living beings.<\/p>\n

\u201cOne gives up taking what is not given, refrains from taking what is not given. One does not steal what belongs to others, whether in a village or a wilderness, when it has not been given to them.<\/p>\n

\u201cOne gives up sexual misconduct, refrains from sexual misconduct; one does not engage in sexual activity with those who are protected by mother, father, parents, brother, sister, relative, family, Dhamma, spouse, law, or betrothal.<\/p>\n

\u201cHouseholders, what are the four kinds of verbal behavior that are consistent with Dhamma and are consistent with peace?<\/p>\n

\u201cHere, householders, someone gives up lying, refrains from lying. \u201cOne gives up divisive speech, refrains from divisive speech. . What one has heard here one does not report over there in order to create division, and what one has heard over there one does not report over here in order to create division. Thus one unites those who are divided, strengthens concord, enjoys harmony, likes harmony, delights in harmony, and speaks in ways that create harmony.<\/p>\n

\u201cOne gives up harsh speech, refrains from harsh speech. Speech which is polite, pleasing to the ear, lovable, heart-touching, humane, appealing to many, enjoyable to many \u2013 this is the kind of speech which one speaks.<\/p>\n

\u201cOne gives up useless speech, refrains from useless speech. One speaks at the right time; one speaks truthfully; one speaks beneficially; one speaks about Dhamma; one speaks about Vinaya. One says things that are worth treasuring, at the right time, reasonably, moderately, connected with the goal.<\/p>\n

\u201cHouseholders, these are the four kinds of verbal behavior that are consistent with Dhamma and are consistent with peace.<\/p>\n

\u201cHouseholders, what are the three kinds of mental behavior that are consistent with Dhamma and are consistent with peace?<\/p>\n

\u201cHere, householders, someone is not covetous. One does not covet other people\u2018s possessions by thinking \u2018Oh, if only what was theirs was mine!\u2019<\/p>\n

\u201cOne has a non-aversive mind with non-hostile thoughts, such as \u2018May these beings be unthreatened, unharmed, untroubled, and constantly happy!\u2019<\/p>\n

\u201cOne has right beliefs and undistorted perspectives, such as: \u2018There are gifts, offerings, and donations. There are results and consequences of good deeds and bad deeds. There are worlds other than this one. There is mother and father. There are beings who appear without undergoing birth. There are contemplatives and priests in this world who are on the right path and are practicing correctly, such that they explain both this world and other worlds based on their own direct knowledge.\u2019<\/p>\n

\u201cHouseholders, these are the three kinds of mental behavior that are consistent with Dhamma and are consistent with peace.<\/p>\n

\u201cThus, householders, it is because of behavior consistent with Dhamma, behavior consistent with peace, that when some beings are separated from their bodies after death, they reappear in a good destination, a heavenly world.\u201d<\/p>\n

Deciding One\u2018s Rebirth<\/p>\n

\u201cHouseholders, if one who behaves consistent with Dhamma and consistent with peace wishes, \u2018When I am separated from my body after death, may I reappear as a wealthy aristocrat,\u2019 then it is possible that when they are separated from their body after death, they may reappear as a wealthy aristocrat. For what reason? Because they behave consistent with Dhamma and consistent with peace.<\/p>\n

\u201cHouseholders, if one who behaves consistent with Dhamma and consistent with peace wishes, \u2018When I am separated from my body after death, may I reappear as a wealthy brahmin\u2026 a wealthy householder\u2026 an angel of the Four Great Kings\u2026 an angel of the Thirty-Three\u2026 a Y\u0101ma2\u00a0angel\u2026 an angel of Contentment\u2026 an angel of Delight in Creating\u2026 an angel of Controlling Other\u2018s Creations\u2026 a Brahma angel\u2026 an angel of Luminosity\u2026 an angel of Limited Luminosity\u2026 an angel of Immeasurable Luminosity\u2026 an angel of Luminous Motion\u2026 an angel of Limited Radiance\u2026 an angel of Immeasurable Radiance\u2026 an angel of Radiant Suffusion\u2026 an angel of Abundant Fruit\u2026 an angel of Aviha\u2026 an angel of Atappa\u2026 an angel of Sudassa\u2026 an angel of Sudassi\u2026 an angel of Akani\u1e6d\u1e6dha\u2026 an angel of the dimension of infinite space\u2026 an angel of the dimension of infinite consciousness\u2026 an angel of the dimension of nothingness\u2026 an angel of the dimension of neither perception nor non-perception,\u2019 then it is possible that when they are separated from their body after death, they may reappear as an angel of the dimension of neither perception nor non-perception. For what reason? Because they behave consistent with Dhamma and consistent with peace.<\/p>\n

\u201cHouseholders, if one who behaves consistent with Dhamma and consistent with peace wishes, \u2018Based on the elimination of my corruptions, may I reach and remain in the immediately visible state of the corruption-free mental liberation by wisdom, having personally realized it with my own higher knowledge,\u2019 then it is possible that, based on the elimination of their corruptions, they will reach and remain in the immediately visible state of the corruption-free mental liberation by wisdom, having personally realized it with their own higher knowledge. For what reason? Because they behave consistent with Dhamma and consistent with peace.\u201d<\/p>\n

When this was said, the brahmin householders of S\u0101l\u0101 said to the Prosperous One, \u201cMagnificent, Sir Gotama, magnificent, Sir Gotama! Sir Gotama, just like one might set upright what was upside down, or reveal what was hidden, or explain the path to one who is confused, or bring an oil lamp into darkness so those with eyes can see, in the same way the Dhamma has been revealed in many ways by Sir Gotama. We go to Sir Gotama for refuge, and to the Dhamma, and to the monastic community. May Sir Gotama remember us as lay devotees who today have taken refuge for the rest of their lives.\u201d<\/p>\n
