In the same way above, below, across, everywhere, all around, they spread a heart full of love to the whole world\u2014abundant, expansive, limitless, free of enmity and ill will.\u00a0They enjoy this and like it and find it satisfying.\u00a0If they abide in that, are committed to it, and meditate on it often without losing it, when they die they\u2019re reborn in the company of the gods of Brahm\u0101\u2019s Host.\u00a0The lifespan of the gods of Brahma\u2019s Host is one eon.\u00a0An ordinary person stays there until the lifespan of those gods is spent, then they go to hell or the animal realm or the ghost realm.\u00a0But a disciple of the Buddha stays there until the lifespan of those gods is spent, then they\u2019re extinguished in that very life.\u00a0This is the difference between a learned noble disciple and an unlearned ordinary person, that is, when there is a place of rebirth.<\/p>\n<p>Furthermore, a person meditates spreading a heart full of compassion \u2026\u00a0rejoicing \u2026\u00a0equanimity to one direction, and to the second, and to the third, and to the fourth. In the same way above, below, across, everywhere, all around, they spread a heart full of equanimity to the whole world\u2014abundant, expansive, limitless, free of enmity and ill will.\u00a0They enjoy this and like it and find it satisfying.\u00a0If they abide in that, are committed to it, and meditate on it often without losing it, when they die they\u2019re reborn in the company of the gods of streaming radiance. The lifespan of the gods of streaming radiance is two eons.\u00a0\u2026 they\u2019re reborn in the company of the gods replete with glory. Thus he keeps pervading above, below, &amp; all around, everywhere &amp; in every respect the all-encompassing cosmos with an awareness imbued with goodwill: abundant, expansive, immeasurable, free from hostility, free from ill will. He savors that, longs for that, finds satisfaction through that. Staying there\u2014fixed on that, dwelling there often, not falling away from that\u2014then when he dies he reappears in conjunction with the Devas of Brahm\u0101\u2019s Retinue. The Devas of Brahm\u0101\u2019s Retinue, monks, have a lifespan of an eon. A run-of-the-mill person having stayed there, having used up all the lifespan of those devas, goes to hell, to the animal womb, to the state of the hungry ghosts. But a disciple of the Blessed One, having stayed there, having used up all the lifespan of those devas, is unbound right in that state of being. The \u0100bhassara, Subhaki\u1e47ha, and Vehapphala devas are all Brahm\u0101s on the level of form.<\/p>\n<p id=\"an4.125note02\">2. This sutta, read in conjunction with\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.dhammatalks.org\/suttas\/AN\/AN4_123.html\">AN\u00a04:123<\/a>, has given rise to the belief that the development of goodwill as an immeasurable state can lead only to the first jh\u0101na, and that the next two immeasurable states\u2014compassion and empathetic joy\u2014can lead, respectively, only to the second and third jh\u0101nas. However, as\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.dhammatalks.org\/suttas\/AN\/AN8_70.html\">AN\u00a08:70<\/a>\u00a0shows, all four immeasurable states can lead all the way to the fourth jh\u0101na. The difference between that discourse and this lies in how the person practicing these states relates to them. In that sutta, the person deliberately uses the state as a basis for developing all the jh\u0101nas. In this sutta, the person simply enjoys the state and remains in it.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<blockquote><p><a
