Then King Pasenadi of Kosala went up to the Buddha in the middle of the day \u2026 The Buddha said to him,\u00a0\u201cSo, great king, where are you coming from in the middle of the day?\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cSir, here in S\u0101vatth\u012b a financier householder has passed away.\u00a0Since he died childless, I have come after transferring his fortune to the royal compound.\u00a0There was ten million in gold, not to mention the silver.\u00a0And yet that financier ate meals of\u00a0rough gruel with pickles.\u00a0He wore clothes consisting of\u00a0three pieces of sunn hemp.\u00a0He traveled around in a vehicle that was\u00a0a dilapidated little cart, holding a leaf as sunshade.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cThat\u2019s so true, great king! That\u2019s so true!\u00a0Once upon a time, great king, that financier householder provided almsfood on behalf of a Buddha awakened for himself named Tagarasikh\u012b.\u00a0He instructed: \u2018Give alms to that ascetic,\u2019 before getting up from his seat and leaving.\u00a0But after giving he regretted it:\u00a0\u2018It would have been better to feed the bondservants or workers with that almsfood.\u2019\u00a0What\u2019s more, he murdered his brother\u2019s only child for the sake of his fortune.<\/p>\n

Because that financier provided Tagarasikh\u012b with almsfood, as a result of that deed he was reborn seven times in a good place, a heavenly realm.\u00a0And as a residual result of that same deed he held the position of financier seven times right here in S\u0101vatth\u012b.\u00a0But because that financier regretted giving alms,\u00a0as a result of that deed his mind didn\u2019t tend to enjoy nice food, clothes, vehicles, or the five refined kinds of sensual stimulation.\u00a0And because that financier murdered his brother\u2019s only child for the sake of his fortune, as a result of that deed he burned in hell for many years, for many hundreds, many thousands, many hundreds of thousands of years.\u00a0And as a residual result of that same deed, he is childless for the seventh time, his fortune ending up in the royal treasury.\u00a0Now the old merit of that financier has been used up, and he hasn\u2019t accumulated new merit.\u00a0Today, great king, that financier burns in the Great Hell of Screams.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cReally, sir, that financier has been reborn in the Great Hell of Screams?\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cYes he has, great king.\u201d<\/p>\n

That is what the Buddha said. \u2026<\/p>\n

\u201cGrain, wealth, silver, and gold,
\nor whatever other possessions there are;
\nbondservants, workers, employees,
\nand those dependent for their livelihood:<\/p>\n

you must go on without taking these;
\nall of them are left behind.
\nBut the deeds you do
\nby body, speech, and mind\u2014<\/p>\n

that\u2019s what you can call your own.
\nThat\u2019s what you take when you go.
\nThat\u2019s what goes with you,
\nlike a shadow that never leaves.<\/p>\n

That\u2019s why you should do good,
\ninvesting in the future life.
\nThe good deeds of sentient beings
