อาทิตตสูตร
สมัยหนึ่ง พระผู้มีพระภาคประทับอยู่ ณ ตำบลคยาสีสะ ริมฝั่งแม่น้ำคยา พร้อมกับภิกษุ ๑,๐๐๐ รูป ณ ที่นั้นแล พระผู้มีพระภาคได้ตรัสกะภิกษุทั้งหลายว่า
ภิกษุทั้งหลาย สิ่งทั้งปวงเป็นของร้อน ภิกษุทั้งหลาย ก็อะไรเล่าชื่อว่า สิ่งทั้งปวงเป็น ของร้อน คือ
ภิกษุทั้งหลาย ตาเป็นของร้อน รูปเป็นของร้อน จักษุวิญญาณเป็นของร้อน จักษุสัมผัสเป็นของร้อน แม้สุขเวทนา ทุกขเวทนา หรืออทุกขมสุขเวทนา ที่เกิดขึ้นเพราะจักษุสัมผัสเป็นปัจจัย ก็เป็นของร้อน ร้อนเพราะอะไร เรากล่าวว่า ร้อนเพราะไฟคือราคะ เพราะไฟคือโทสะ เพราะไฟคือโมหะ ร้อนเพราะชาติ (ความเกิด) เพราะชรา (ความแก่) เพราะมรณะ (ความตาย) เพราะโสกะ (ความเศร้าโศก) เพราะปริเทวะ (ความคร่ำครวญ) เพราะทุกข์ (ความทุกข์กาย) เพราะโทมนัส (ความทุกข์ใจ) และเพราะอุปายาส (ความคับแค้นใจ).
ภิกษุทั้งหลาย หูเป็นของร้อน เสียงเป็นของร้อน โสตวิญญาณเป็นของร้อน โสตสัมผัสเป็นของร้อน แม้สุขเวทนา ทุกขเวทนา หรืออทุกขมสุขเวทนา ที่เกิดขึ้นเพราะโสตสัมผัสเป็นปัจจัย ก็เป็นของร้อน ร้อนเพราะอะไร เรากล่าวว่า ร้อนเพราะไฟคือราคะ เพราะไฟคือโทสะ เพราะไฟคือโมหะ ร้อนเพราะชาติ เพราะชรา เพราะมรณะ เพราะโสกะ เพราะปริเทวะ เพราะทุกข์ เพราะโทมนัส และเพราะอุปายาส.
ภิกษุทั้งหลาย จมูกเป็นของร้อน กลิ่นเป็นของร้อน ฆานวิญญาณเป็นของร้อน ฆานสัมผัสเป็นของร้อน แม้สุขเวทนา ทุกขเวทนา หรืออทุกขมสุขเวทนา ที่เกิดขึ้นเพราะฆานสัมผัสเป็นปัจจัย ก็เป็นของร้อน ร้อนเพราะอะไร เรากล่าวว่า ร้อนเพราะไฟคือราคะ เพราะไฟคือโทสะ เพราะไฟคือโมหะ ร้อนเพราะชาติ เพราะชรา เพราะมรณะ เพราะโสกะ เพราะปริเทวะ เพราะทุกข์ เพราะโทมนัส และเพราะอุปายาส.
ภิกษุทั้งหลาย ลิ้นเป็นของร้อน รสเป็นของร้อน ชิวหาวิญญาณเป็นของร้อน ชิวหาสัมผัสเป็นของร้อน แม้สุขเวทนา ทุกขเวทนา หรืออทุกขมสุขเวทนา ที่เกิดขึ้นเพราะชิวหาสัมผัสเป็นปัจจัย ก็เป็นของร้อน ร้อนเพราะอะไร เรากล่าวว่า ร้อนเพราะไฟคือราคะ เพราะไฟคือโทสะ เพราะไฟคือโมหะ ร้อนเพราะชาติ เพราะชรา เพราะมรณะ เพราะโสกะ เพราะปริเทวะ เพราะทุกข์ เพราะโทมนัส และเพราะอุปายาส.
ภิกษุทั้งหลาย กายเป็นของร้อน โผฏฐัพพะเป็นของร้อน กายวิญญาณเป็นของร้อน กายสัมผัสเป็นของร้อน แม้สุขเวทนา ทุกขเวทนา หรืออทุกขมสุขเวทนา ที่เกิดขึ้นเพราะกายสัมผัสเป็นปัจจัย ก็เป็นของร้อน ร้อนเพราะอะไร เรากล่าวว่า ร้อนเพราะไฟคือราคะ เพราะไฟคือโทสะ เพราะไฟคือโมหะ ร้อนเพราะชาติ เพราะชรา เพราะมรณะ เพราะโสกะ เพราะปริเทวะ เพราะทุกข์ เพราะโทมนัส และเพราะอุปายาส.
ภิกษุทั้งหลาย ใจเป็นของร้อน ธรรมเป็นของร้อน มโนวิญญาณเป็นของร้อน มโนสัมผัสเป็นของร้อน แม้สุขเวทนา ทุกขเวทนา หรืออทุกขมสุขเวทนา ที่เกิดขึ้นเพราะมโนสัมผัสเป็นปัจจัย ก็เป็นของร้อน ร้อนเพราะอะไร เรากล่าวว่า ร้อนเพราะไฟคือราคะ เพราะไฟคือโทสะ เพราะไฟคือโมหะ ร้อนเพราะชาติ (ความเกิด) เพราะชรา (ความแก่) เพราะมรณะ (ความตาย) เพราะโสกะ (ความเศร้าโศก) เพราะปริเทวะ (ความคร่ำครวญ) เพราะทุกข์ (ความทุกข์กาย) เพราะโทมนัส (ความทุกข์ใจ) และเพราะอุปายาส (ความคับแค้นใจ).
ภิกษุทั้งหลาย อริยสาวกผู้ได้สดับแล้ว เห็นอยู่อย่างนี้ ย่อมเบื่อหน่ายแม้ในตา ย่อมเบื่อหน่ายแม้ในรูป ย่อมเบื่อหน่ายแม้ในจักษุวิญญาณ ย่อมเบื่อหน่ายแม้ในจักษุสัมผัส ย่อมเบื่อหน่ายแม้ในสุขเวทนา ทุกขเวทนา หรืออทุกขมสุขเวทนา ที่เกิดขึ้นเพราะจักษุสัมผัสเป็นปัจจัย ย่อมเบื่อหน่ายแม้ในหู ย่อมเบื่อหน่ายแม้ในเสียง ย่อมเบื่อหน่ายแม้ในโสตวิญญาณ ย่อมเบื่อหน่ายแม้ในโสตสัมผัส ย่อมเบื่อหน่ายแม้ในสุขเวทนา ทุกขเวทนา หรืออทุกขมสุขเวทนา ที่เกิดขึ้นเพราะโสตสัมผัสเป็นปัจจัย ย่อมเบื่อหน่ายแม้ในจมูก ย่อมเบื่อหน่ายแม้ในกลิ่น ย่อมเบื่อหน่ายแม้ในฆานวิญญาณ ย่อมเบื่อหน่ายแม้ในฆานสัมผัส ย่อมเบื่อหน่ายแม้ในสุขเวทนา ทุกขเวทนา หรืออทุกขมสุขเวทนา ที่เกิดขึ้นเพราะฆานสัมผัสเป็นปัจจัย ย่อมเบื่อหน่ายแม้ในลิ้น ย่อมเบื่อหน่ายแม้ในรส ย่อมเบื่อหน่ายแม้ในชิวหาวิญญาณ ย่อมเบื่อหน่ายแม้ในชิวหาสัมผัส ย่อมเบื่อหน่ายแม้ในสุขเวทนา ทุกขเวทนา หรืออทุกขมสุขเวทนา ที่เกิดขึ้นเพราะชิวหาสัมผัสเป็นปัจจัย ย่อมเบื่อหน่ายแม้ในกาย ย่อมเบื่อหน่ายแม้ในโผฏฐัพพะ ย่อมเบื่อหน่ายแม้ในกายวิญญาณ ย่อมเบื่อหน่ายแม้ในกายสัมผัส ย่อมเบื่อหน่ายแม้ในสุขเวทนา ทุกขเวทนา หรืออทุกขมสุขเวทนา ที่เกิดขึ้นเพราะกายสัมผัสเป็นปัจจัย ย่อมเบื่อหน่ายแม้ในใจ ย่อมเบื่อหน่ายแม้ในธรรม ย่อมเบื่อหน่ายแม้ในมโนวิญญาณ ย่อมเบื่อหน่ายแม้ในมโนสัมผัส ย่อมเบื่อหน่ายแม้ในสุขเวทนา ทุกขเวทนา หรืออทุกขมสุขเวทนา ที่เกิดขึ้นเพราะมโนสัมผัสเป็นปัจจัย
เมื่อเบื่อหน่าย ย่อมคลายกำหนัด เพราะคลายกำหนัด ย่อมหลุดพ้น เมื่อหลุดพ้นแล้ว ย่อมมีญาณหยั่งรู้ว่า หลุดพ้นแล้ว ย่อมรู้ชัดว่า ชาติสิ้นแล้ว พรหมจรรย์อยู่จบแล้ว กิจที่ควรทำได้ทำเสร็จแล้ว กิจอื่นเพื่อความเป็นอย่างนี้มิได้มีอีก ดังนี้.
พระผู้มีพระภาคได้ตรัสไวยากรณภาษิตนี้จบลงแล้วภิกษุเหล่านั้นต่างชื่นชมยินดีภาษิตของพระผู้มีพระภาค ก็แหละเมื่อพระองค์ได้ตรัสไวยากรณภาษิตนี้อยู่ ภิกษุ ๑,๐๐๐ รูปนั้น ต่างมีจิตหลุดพ้นจากอาสวะ เพราะไม่มีอุปาทาน ดังนี้แล.

At one time the Buddha was staying near Gayā on Gayā Head together with a thousand mendicants. There the Buddha addressed the mendicants:
“Mendicants, all is burning. And what is the all that is burning?
The eye is burning. Sights are burning. Eye consciousness is burning. Eye contact is burning. The painful, pleasant, or neutral feeling that arises conditioned by eye contact is also burning. Burning with what? Burning with the fires of greed, hate, and delusion. Burning with rebirth, old age, and death, with sorrow, lamentation, pain, sadness, and distress.
The ear … nose … tongue … body …
The mind is burning. Thoughts are burning. Mind consciousness is burning. Mind contact is burning. The painful, pleasant, or neutral feeling that arises conditioned by mind contact is also burning. Burning with what? Burning with the fires of greed, hate, and delusion. Burning with rebirth, old age, and death, with sorrow, lamentation, pain, sadness, and distress, I say.
Seeing this, a learned noble disciple grows disillusioned with the eye, sights, eye consciousness, and eye contact. And they grow disillusioned with the painful, pleasant, or neutral feeling that arises conditioned by eye contact.
They grow disillusioned with the ear … nose … tongue … body … mind … painful, pleasant, or neutral feeling that arises conditioned by mind contact.
Being disillusioned, desire fades away. When desire fades away they’re freed. When they’re freed, they know they’re freed.
They understand: ‘Rebirth is ended, the spiritual journey has been completed, what had to be done has been done, there is no return to any state of existence.’”
That is what the Buddha said. Satisfied, the mendicants were happy with what the Buddha said. And while this discourse was being spoken, the minds of the thousand mendicants were freed from defilements by not grasping.

On one occasion the Blessed One was dwelling at Gaya, at Gaya’s Head, together with a thousand bhikkhus. There the Blessed One addressed the bhikkhus thus:
“Bhikkhus, all is burning. And what, bhikkhus, is the all that is burning? The eye is burning, forms are burning, eye-consciousness is burning, eye-contact is burning, and whatever feeling arises with eye-contact as condition—whether pleasant or painful or neither-painful-nor-pleasant—that too is burning. Burning with what? Burning with the fire of lust, with the fire of hatred, with the fire of delusion; burning with birth, aging, and death; with sorrow, lamentation, pain, displeasure, and despair, I say.
“The ear is burning … … The mind is burning … and whatever feeling arises with mind-contact as condition—whether pleasant or painful or neither-painful-nor-pleasant—that too is burning. Burning with what? Burning with the fire of lust, with the fire of hatred, with the fire of delusion; burning with birth, aging, and death; with sorrow, lamentation, pain, displeasure, and despair, I say.
“Seeing thus, bhikkhus, the instructed noble disciple experiences revulsion towards the eye, towards forms, towards eye-consciousness, towards eye-contact, towards whatever feeling arises with eye-contact as condition—whether pleasant or painful or neither-painful-nor-pleasant; experiences revulsion towards the ear … towards the mind … towards whatever feeling arises with mind-contact as condition…. Experiencing revulsion, he becomes dispassionate. Through dispassion his mind is liberated. When it is liberated there comes the knowledge: ‘It’s liberated.’ He understands: ‘Destroyed is birth, the holy life has been lived, what had to be done has been done, there is no more for this state of being.’”
This is what the Blessed One said. Elated, those bhikkhus delighted in the Blessed One’s statement. And while this discourse was being spoken, the minds of the thousand bhikkhus were liberated from the taints by nonclinging.
