ผู้อยู่ด้วยธรรม (๒)
ครั้งนั้น ภิกษุรูปหนึ่ง เข้าไปเฝ้าพระผู้มีพระภาคถึงที่ประทับ ถวายอภิวาทแล้วนั่ง ณ ที่สมควร ครั้นแล้ว ได้ทูลถามพระผู้มีพระภาคว่า ภันเต ที่เรียกกันว่า ผู้อยู่ด้วยธรรม ผู้อยู่ด้วยธรรม ดังนี้ ภิกษุชื่อว่า เป็นผู้อยู่ด้วยธรรม ด้วยเหตุเพียงเท่าไรหนอ.
พระผู้มีพระภาคตรัสว่า ภิกษุ ภิกษุในกรณีนี้ ย่อมเล่าเรียนธรรม คือ สุตตะ เคยยะ เวยยากรณะ คาถา อุทาน อิติวุตตกะ ชาดก อัพภูตธรรม เวทัลละ แต่เธอไม่รู้ทั่วถึงความหมายอันยิ่งของธรรมนั้นด้วยปัญญา ภิกษุนี้เรียกว่า เป็นผู้มากด้วยการเล่าเรียน ไม่ชื่อว่าเป็นผู้อยู่ด้วยธรรม.
ภิกษุ อีกประการหนึ่ง ภิกษุย่อมแสดงธรรมตามที่ได้ฟังมา ตามที่ได้เล่าเรียนมา แก่ผู้อื่นโดยพิสดาร แต่เธอไม่รู้ทั่วถึงความหมายอันยิ่งของธรรมนั้นด้วยปัญญา ภิกษุนี้เรียกว่า เป็นผู้มากด้วยการแสดงธรรม ไม่ชื่อว่าเป็นผู้อยู่ด้วยธรรม.
ภิกษุ อีกประการหนึ่ง ภิกษุย่อมทำการสาธยายธรรมตามที่ได้ฟังมา ตามที่ได้เล่าเรียนมาโดยพิสดาร แต่เธอไม่รู้ทั่วถึงความหมายอันยิ่งของธรรมนั้นด้วยปัญญา ภิกษุนี้เรียกว่า เป็นผู้มากด้วยการสาธยาย ไม่ชื่อว่าเป็นผู้อยู่ด้วยธรรม.
ภิกษุ อีกประการหนึ่ง ภิกษุย่อมตรึกตาม ตรองตาม เพ่งตามด้วยใจ ซึ่งธรรม ตามที่ได้ฟังมา ตามที่ได้เล่าเรียนมา แต่เธอไม่รู้ทั่วถึงความหมายอันยิ่งของธรรมนั้นด้วยปัญญา ภิกษุนี้เรียกว่า เป็นผู้มากด้วยการตรึก (คิด) ไม่ชื่อว่าเป็นผู้อยู่ด้วยธรรม.
ภิกษุ ภิกษุในกรณีนี้ ย่อมเล่าเรียนธรรม คือ สุตตะ เคยยะ เวยยากรณะ คาถา อุทาน
อิติวุตตกะ ชาดก อัพภูตธรรม เวทัลละ และเธอย่อมรู้ทั่วถึงความหมายอันยิ่งของธรรมนั้นด้วยปัญญา ภิกษุอย่างนี้แลชื่อว่า เป็นผู้อยู่ด้วยธรรม.
ภิกษุ ภิกษุผู้มากด้วยการเล่าเรียนเราได้แสดงแล้ว ภิกษุผู้มากด้วยการแสดงธรรมเราก็ได้แสดงแล้ว ภิกษุผู้มากด้วยการสาธยายเราก็ได้แสดงแล้ว ภิกษุผู้มากด้วยการตรึกเราก็ได้แสดงแล้ว ภิกษุผู้อยู่ด้วยธรรมเราก็ได้แสดงแล้ว ด้วยประการอย่างนี้.
ภิกษุ กิจใด ที่ศาสดาผู้หวังประโยชน์เกื้อกูล ผู้อนุเคราะห์ อาศัยความเอ็นดู จะพึงทำแก่สาวกทั้งหลาย กิจนั้นเราได้ทำแล้วแก่เธอทั้งหลาย ภิกษุ นั่นโคนไม้ นั่นเรือนว่าง เธอทั้งหลายจงเพียรเผากิเลส อย่าได้ประมาท อย่าได้เป็นผู้ที่ต้องมีความเดือดร้อนใจในภายหลัง นี้แลเป็นคำสอนของเราเพื่อเธอทั้งหลาย.

Then a mendicant went up to the Buddha, bowed, sat down to one side, and said to him:
“Sir, they speak of ‘one who lives by the teaching’. How is one who lives by the teaching defined?”
“Mendicant, take a mendicant who memorizes the teaching—statements, songs, discussions, verses, inspired exclamations, legends, stories of past lives, amazing stories, and classifications. But they don’t understand the higher meaning. That mendicant is called one who studies a lot, not one who lives by the teaching.
Furthermore, a mendicant teaches Dhamma in detail to others as they learned and memorized it. But they don’t understand the higher meaning. That mendicant is called one who advocates a lot, not one who lives by the teaching.
Furthermore, a mendicant recites the teaching in detail as they learned and memorized it. But they don’t understand the higher meaning. That mendicant is called one who recites a lot, not one who lives by the teaching.
Furthermore, a mendicant thinks about and considers the teaching in their heart, examining it with the mind as they learned and memorized it. But they don’t understand the higher meaning. That mendicant is called one who thinks a lot, not one who lives by the teaching.
Take a mendicant who memorizes the teaching—statements, songs, discussions, verses, inspired exclamations, legends, stories of past lives, amazing stories, and classifications. And they do understand the higher meaning. That’s how a mendicant is one who lives by the teaching.
So, mendicant, I’ve taught you the one who studies a lot, the one who advocates a lot, the one who recites a lot, the one who thinks a lot, and the one who lives by the teaching. Out of compassion, I’ve done what a teacher should do who wants what’s best for their disciples. Here are these roots of trees, and here are these empty huts. Practice absorption, mendicant! Don’t be negligent! Don’t regret it later! This is my instruction to you.”
