ที่พึ่งผิด ที่พึ่งถูก
มนุษย์ทั้งหลายเป็นอันมาก ถูกความกลัวคุกคามเอาแล้ว ย่อมยึดถือเอาภูเขาบ้าง ป่าไม้ที่ศักดิ์สิทธิ์บ้าง สวนศักดิ์สิทธิ์บ้าง รุกขเจดีย์บ้าง ว่าเป็นที่พึ่งของตนๆ นั่นไม่ใช่ที่พึ่งอันทำความเกษมให้ได้เลย นั่นไม่ใช่ที่พึ่งอันสูงสุด ผู้ใดถือเอาสิ่งนั้นๆ เป็นที่พึ่งแล้ว ย่อมไม่หลุดพ้นไปจากทุกข์ทั้งปวงได้.
ส่วนผู้ใดที่ถึงพระพุทธ พระธรรม พระสงฆ์ เป็นที่พึ่ง แล้วเห็นอริยสัจทั้งสี่ด้วยปัญญาอันถูกต้อง คือ เห็นทุกข์ เห็นเหตุเป็นเครื่องให้เกิดขึ้นของทุกข์ เห็นความก้าวล่วงเสียได้ซึ่งทุกข์ และเห็นมรรคประกอบด้วยองค์แปดอันประเสริฐ ซึ่งเป็นเครื่องให้ถึงความเข้าไปสงบรำงับแห่งทุกข์ นั่นแหละ คือ ที่พึ่งอันเกษม นั่นคือ ที่พึ่งอันสูงสุด ผู้ใดถือเอาที่พึ่งนั้นแล้ว ย่อมหลุดพ้นไปจากทุกข์ทั้งปวงได้แท้.

… So many go for refuge to mountains and forest groves,
to tree shrines in tended parks;
those people are driven by fear.But such refuge is no sanctuary,
it is no supreme refuge.
By going to that refuge,
you’re not released from suffering.One gone for refuge to the Buddha,
to his teaching and to the Saṅgha,
sees the four noble truths
with right understanding:suffering, suffering’s origin,
suffering’s transcendence,
and the noble eightfold path
that leads to the stilling of suffering.Such refuge is a sanctuary,
it is the supreme refuge.
By going to that refuge,
you’re released from all suffering.

… Many people shaken by fear go for refuge
to woods and mountains, to tree shrines in pleasure parks.
That is not a secure refuge, that is not the refuge supreme,
that is not the refuge to come to that liberates from all suffering.
Whoever has gone refuge to the Buddha, the Dhamma and the Saṅgha,
and who sees with right wisdom the four noble truths:
Suffering, arising of suffering, and the overcoming of suffering,
the eightfold noble path leading to the stilling of suffering.
That is a secure refuge, that is the refuge supreme,
that is the refuge to come to that liberates from all suffering.
